These are around 2kw, modern military lasers are essentially the same just with a bunch of them funneled together with fiber optic splitters hooked up backwards to reach a couple mega watts. The chemical lasers of the 90's were a dead end tech and are now quite obsolete.
The US spent 100s of millions fitting one to a 747. Literally the whole plane cabin was filled with the machine to make the laser. Same issue as pyro had though, keeping the beam steady. They do have them fitted to a ship and even some concept apc’s. The English navy have one that is actually deployed I believe
@@feelincrispy7053 the royal navy version is only in ground tests at the moment, not yet really big enough (IMO) or developed enough for the front lines. Give it 5 years I'd say.
Can I just say, it is intensely gratifying to know that, somewhere, out in the wilds of the North American continent, there is a mad scientist doing all the things I dreamed of doing as a kid, but never had the chance to do. It is so important for a world to contain eccentric, affable people who have the potential to end worlds, but just don't. @@styropyro Interesting! I always thought about to "limit" laser length, that beam always be fixed length by turn it on and off very fast and precise in time. Is it even possible?
I work on a 24,000 watt fiber laser for my job, and it can pierce through 1.5 inch steel in less than 1 second. I thought it was dumb when the military put giant lasers on their ships, but if you can build this in your backyard with stuff you bought online, I have no doubt the military can build something even more insane. Awesome video!

Laser ablation is a handy thing, we use it in geology to get extremely small sample areas for chemical analysis (LA-ICP-MS if anyone is interested). You can sample down to a few micrometres, which can let us see chemical changes within a single tiny crystal, and because it's a laser it's pretty quick for bulk analysis too. Our lasers are obviously much smaller than this though!

I'm pretty sure the power source needs to plug in to something or carry an EV's worth of batteries to be that mobile, but like a truck mounted laser on an f150 lightning seems very doable. I think the cybertruck has higher output power from the plugs so it might work better.

😂🎉
If Drake can do this in his backyard I cant even begin to imagine how crazy actual Military Level Stuff is
He's actually been approached by the military before, but he turned down their offers
@@Orinslayerthat’s why they’re only on vessels with nuclear reactors
The applications with this are insane. You could potentially replace many weapons with this alone upgraded and mini sized.
5:30 the chaotic energy of lighting thermite with a kilowatt laser surrounded by dead leaves is just entirely in character for styropyro.
it scared me lol
That... was unwise.
If the leaves weren't enough did you see the propane tank surrounded by the same pile of leaves?
I guess you didn’t watch it until they end where he says it rained, the leaves are moist and therefore there’s zero chance of starting a forest fire.
@@karagi101I was glad i watched that far, and that that was said XD I did have mild concerns but figured there would be some contingency plan.
I feel like we’re getting closer and closer with every upload to styropyro developing a full laser based air defense suite for his property
Well defensive more like offensive look at Hawaii
Air defence??? Don’t you mean everything defence
It brings a sense of wonder and urgency to life, knowing that at any moment, someone like you might giggle maniacally, and accidentally bore a hole clear through the Earth, or accidentally cut the Moon in half with a misfire from something they threw together as proof of concept. Go you!
Yeet!
Now I kinda want to see him build a giant bore laser and drill into the ground... How far could he get and why hasnt anyone else done that?
@@Ixidoraprobably cause vaporizing the ground to evacuate it is really inefficient. but to be fair, the awesomeness factor should more than make up for that.
@@CyclesAreSingularities
I totally get that it is horribly energy inefficient but it has to beat out the staggering costs of drills like the one used for the Kola Super deep bore hole.
At this point I almost want to build it myself but that much electricity makes me more nervous than the laser dangers do.
I have a couple of electrically savvy friends I need to talk to but I'm getting kinda psyched at the idea. If I can find the time and space for the idea I'm going to try it, provided it gets any kind of interesting I'll try my hand at making a video out of it.
I wish I could bookmark a comment and come back to it.

Gotta say, this has been a dream of mine since well, I saw light sabers and laser blasters from the 80s. The best I have ever gotten before is a 200w IR laser to burn 100' or so. Very cool bro! I work on a 24,000 watt fiber laser for my job, and it can pierce through 1.5 inch steel in less than 1 second. Of course, the laser I work on is used for industrial purposes, and it's not made to aim at things long range lol, but the science behind it all amazes me. Oh I'm sure that laser can be made to focus at a distance with just a few modifications.

@@theKashConnoisseur fair point. Everything is controlled and (for the most part) contained. The most important thing is to never hold them at an angle above zero and/or at waist level.
