Richard Daniels the condition of myopia is reversible in most people, so getting out of bad habits (too much close up work for long periods) and encouraging your vision to improve through reducing your diopter and engaging in active focusing activities can unfuck your eyes. ***** I, too, have shortsightedness and spend a fair amount of time in front of a screen. The thing is, it depends on how you define "close". So the problem with lookking at ANYTHING close is that your eyes are built for looking at far away things. There are muscles in our eyes which stretch the lense by contracting to make close things appear clear. When those muscles are contracted most of the time, they'll notice all the extra muscle is not needed and contracting it costs strength, so the body will slowly get rid of the extra bit of muscle needed to see far away objects clearly. Then, the lense can't be put in a form where it shows far away objects clearly, also known as nearsightedness.
I watched this video because my parents claim my iPod (now iPhone) and laptop are what caused my vision to get messed up. I disagreed, seeing as how I needed to sit closer to the board in class to see good, and even then I had to squint sometimes just to see. After about a year of this, I was taken in for an eye exam and was prescribed glasses for my shortsightedness. So, they assumed my needing glasses was attributed to my electronics.
I'd say it is effecting my eyesight. I normally read books. Recently got ipad, use it too much. I cannot focus in street. It's like my vision is not HD but 360hp. It's as powerfully lit as a torch. So shining that into retinas is worse than a book for sure.
GAGE1207 unfortunately I was pretty close to TVs playing on my PS4 back in the day and to be honest I’m close to my I-pad writing my comment here and I have to get my eyes checked now since they are only lightly weakened to see some digital written things from far away so hope it’s nothing serious
I disagree. I am certain computer screens have made me short sighted. There is no history of people needing glasses in my immediate family. I spend a ridiculous amount of time in front of computers for many years using a computer to for studying, working, chilling. Though I do wonder how much my vision would improve if I stayed away from computers for a long period of time as although I feel using computers day in and day out has done permanent damage to my eyes, I think the fact I barely go a day without looking at one, I don't think my eyes ever recover and end up dry, strained, tired, achy, blurred.
I grown up with my family saying that if I ate something with my spoon I couldn't stick it back into the pot of whatever was inside because it would spoil the whole pot, doesn't matter of what could be jam, food etc. Is it true or the people created it driven with the disgusted of it? Thanks!
I think it's the last one. In order for anything from your spoon to get into the whole pot it must come in contact with the containment and then leave it "cleaned", or it has to be left in the pot long enough to pass something. But in the case of the jam (or any similar sticky food), the actual jam that will come to an immediate contact with the spoon will almost surely get out of the whole pot, stack to the spoon, leaving the other jam uncontaminated :) But it's still not nice to stick your spoon wherever you want and whenever you feel like it :P
Dev Anima Thanks for your answer!! Yeah it's not nice to stick your used spoon back in the pot, but then to say that everything is gonna be spoiled, till now i was wondering and i always bought it haha and kept saying it along.. Thanks!!
Dev Anima By the way how is it in your culture? What I just said is my culture in country side of Brazil.. Same thing happens to eating Mango and drinking milk afterwards.. they say it is really bad and you can even die of it hahaha
Marcos Vinícius Well, it depends on the actual situation and people, but generally it isn't nice. Not sure about mangos and milk, but those things are not just recent stuff emerged from misinformed conclusions, they are most probably old and have some real bases. For example I have been told that eating eggs late at night or evening is not healthy, and then I found out that eggs contain a lot of choline and vitamin D, both of them will make it harder for you to fall asleep and are usually better to consume in the morning or in the first half of the day. Also there is some very old and usefull saying which goes like this, "don't mix Mentos and Coke" :P
I can't unlove you because…it will give me the loneliest feeling. It will make my heart stop from beating. It will make me paralyzed from all of the good, and positive feelings. It will drain, and make my entire body exhausted. It will make me half dead, and barely breathing. I can't unlove you because…it will make me stop from dreaming. It will bring me nightmares paired with depression. It will make my dreams useless. It will make me careless and hopeless. It will make my life chaotic, miserable, and simply without direction. I can't unlove you because… I still have a hundred of reasons to love you. I still have that fire in my heart -burning. I still have sufficient grounds for staying in love. I still have that passion to make this love work. And I still have this heart -beating for you. I can't unlove you, I simply can't. Because unloving you would also mean -giving up with my life And I think, it will never be so easy to unlove you; Because… it has always been so difficult to lose you.
There are tiny muscles inside your eyeball that change the shape of your eye’s lens in order to bring whatever you’re seeing into focus. After hours of sitting in front of your computer screen, those muscles can grow tired from focusing on a single fixed point. In some cases, those muscles become so fatigued that your eyes can no longer focus. Research has also shown that when reading or working online, people tend to blink less. That can lead to dry eyes, tearing, or a burning sensation.
Technically, since you're sitting closer to a radiation emitting electronic, it is bad for your eyes, well actually your whole body to be exact. So in all reality, maybe only in minuscule amounts, sitting close to the TV is bad for you.
HamPuddle It is a joke for anyone who knows about the electromagnetic spectrum and the 7 types of radiation... X-ray is only one of 7 while visual light is another. The true question is do YOU know what radiation is? ;)
My dad used to keep telling me I would ruin my eyes reading in the dark. I would read as the sun sets and be too lazy to turn the lights on. I would read until I can't see the words and quit. My biology teacher also said that reading in the dark won't hurt you, it may cause fatigue. You won't hurt your eyes looking at anything except for something like the sun or sticking something physical in it like a needle. Since TV's are getting brighter each year, I suppose it may be someday when they come out with a megalumen TV, someone may go blind.
Always knew this was true. All the men in my mother's side of the family have long range vision problems and they're all super outdoors-y type people. I fail to believe these people that hated being inside could have the same eyeproblem by the same age I did with a different lifestyle if it was just "because of sitting too close to a screen"
Why would watching a bright screen in an otherwise dark room be harmful? My computer monitor and my TV both reflect the light source in my bedroom. Turning that light off solves the problem. I watch shows and play games with the light off. Not a problem.
I have always been visually impaired so I had to sit close to television screens, but even when I acquired more vision at different points in my life it was hard to see further away because my muscles were built to see further away. Although my vision is a lot worse than it used to be, so I don't really stare at screens anymore because there's not really a point. I don't have enough to get good visuals out of it.
Its weird that you guys did this episode, because I just got my glasses today at 15 years old. My eye doctor said it happened because I was starring at too many screens
The sayings may be classed 'myths' but the fact remains: do screens affect our eyes? yes as you've shared and personal experience can attest to. But our eyes are just a part of a greater whole (the body) so what are the ripple affects of having the eyes affected by these screens? Like that sense of 'where am I?' when looking up from a screen or that feeling of disconnection from the world around me once away from the screen - what affect is bringing all our focus onto what are eyes are receiving doing the the rest of us?
Do a vid on the myth that you can catch a cold from the cold. Whether it is from not wearing the right clothing or not wearing a hat or going outside in the winter after having just taken a shower.
My mother used to sell that crap to me as well. I did need glasses when I turned 7, but it was not because of staring at screens. In fact, since then, I've been using my laptop for longer periods of time than I did when I was little, mostly because of my education. And my eyes have not gotten worse. In 13 years of staring at screens for hours every day, my eyes have not gotten worse. And yet, my mother still tries to convince me that staring at a screen will ruin my eyes further.
THAT is an interesting study because my doctor attributed my near sightedness to the solution for resting tired eyes. I worked at a horse track for 4 years and as a photo finish op I work on a computer at the back of the stands. Every 20 minutes for 4 hours I need to look out into the middle of the track about a 100 meters away at a tote board for information I need to use. Over time I noticed it took my eyes longer and longer to switch focus from my screen in front of me to the board far away, especially at night. This caused eye strain for me. I lost my perfect vision and can't see far away under fluorescent lights.
I have noticed recently that I see a faint tracing image behind moving objects if the background is darker then the object. other then that my eye sight is pretty good and ive been gaming everyday since I was 8..im 23 now.
I need to sit close to tvs and stuff because I'm legally blind... But everyone asks me why I look at things so close. It gets annoying repeating my self so many times -.-
If staring at the sun hurts your eyes, it also hurts your eyes playing in the dark. Most people who stare at the screen all day, will develop dry eyes, eye strains, which can lead to vision loss after a while. Your eye muscles will become weak as you stare straight for long periods of time, over a long period of time, months, years. Having an air blown at your eyes from vents or ventilators drys your unblinking eyes. Staring at computers, mobile devices, tablets for long periods of time reduces your natural consecutive blinking ability which moistens your eyes, it can also lead to reduce tear production and no tear production. Which then causes dry eyes, eye strain, dust to stick in the eyes, which leads to dry eyes, fatigue, pain, headaches and red veins. People in homes or offices in winter areas may have increased dry eyes, by the dry air ventilated, also with AC. Glare on your screen or a brighter light near your vision, like a bright window near your computer, sunlight hitting your bright paper while you work, reading in the sun. Also lack of sleep and nutrition hurts the eyes. Another reason for worsening eyesight can be damage to the nerves of the eyes, small deformation of the eye (football shaped eyes), damaged lens or retina and or disease. But most heavy computer users and heavy readers end up having glasses, age sometimes does not affect the eyes. My neighbor was 79 years old, had better than 20/20 vision. Never used computer electronics, was a firefighter and veteran. He can see insanely far.
so here is a question, is this more dangerous than going outside? How about if the weather outside is inhospitable for long periods of time, Extreme cold, heat. etc
I've always wondered if watching tv or playing video games in the dark was bad for your eyes. But then again my eyes are completely fine and I've been doing both pretty much all my life lol.
What if I don't sit close to the computer, I sit approximately 1.5feet away from the computer. Does this not cause as much eye strain as it would if I sat nearer? Also does this mean I can use the computer for 40mins then only look afar.
Evidence now shows that myopia is caused by 'eye strain' where your lens spasms from too much close up work and then finds it hard to focus on far away objects. SO you are correct in saying take a break and spend more time looking further to restore vision. But you are incorrect when you say its a myth, as close up work causes myopia in most people and can now be reversed. Glasses correct the problem but lead to lens induced myopia which then forces your eyes to get worse over time. Take a look at the evidence on the endmyopia website if you are interested or want to restore your vision to 20/20.
What is the effect of watching screens at a long distance? Eg min) back row in a movie theatre, max) giant signs that are on the edge of skyscrapers when in a car around 100m away
Short sightedness is not only caused by staying inside, but by keeping your eyes glued to something close. It's because your eye muscles need a chance to stretch otherwise they get fixed at a certain focal range, aka u can only see as far as you are away from what your watching/reading. Optometrist told me because I read like mad when I was a kid.
Up until a year ago I had superb close-up vision. I've also always had problems sleeping so found relief by leaving on the tv, but then I switched to youtube and so, because my phone has a tiny screen, I watched it from up close. Now my near vision is terrible (but my older sibling who doesn't watch youtube on his phone still has great neat sight).
my family always says that myth, and also says a few others that i think are incorrect: a.) do not read/view television while you eat, it will make your digestion go bad because your brain is not concentrating on digesting. b.) always watch any screen in a well lit room -that way you will never suffer an epilepsy. c.) lemons cut grease, and thus, you should sprinkle your food with squeezed lemon juice (the more sour, the better) d.) you should wait half an hour before doing anything after you eat e.) there are certain drink combinations you should avoid, such as pizza and water; instead, opt for a coke. f.) if you sleep in the whole morning and wake up to eat, you are eating lunch. They theorize that you missed one big meal of the day already and shouldn't try to compensate or call it brunch. How many of these are close to the truth?
Actually, I once read that lightbulbs might be the reason that so many more people have glasses these days. Bad eyesight seems to be much less common to people who live in tribes without electricity, or so I've read in some scientific magazine once (clearest source ever!) The obvious point to make is that they wouldn't have opticians in those places either, but I guess you should do the research yourself if you want to be sure :p On another note, I do get migraines if I sit too close to a screen. Putting my eye *on* a computer screen gives a 100% chance of me having a migraine the next day even. I don't know if that has anything to do with the topic, it's probably more about overstimulation of my brain or something, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
My eyes are just too perfect, i used to spend like 5 hours in a row everyday for 2 years on the computer and i can still see objects clearly from 1-2km. and i passed the vision test with no mistakes. For short: i haven't noticed any difference with sight before i started using the gadgets and now
I notice if I stare at my phone for too long I see double looking at long distances. It isn't crazy, but it's definitely noticable. like, look at a tv scree with words, and then imagine the exact words, with identical ghost words hovering above the real thing, slightly see through. i feel like I should get my eyes checked out, it's been kinda recent that I notice this
the way i look at it, looking at a television does harm your eyes depending on how you are looking at it. If you are looking at it whilst you are in the dark, and constantly switching to look into a dark area, it will put a strain on your eyes. AND YES will indeed damage your eyes.
My sister would stay on her laptop for 4+ hours a day, staying up until about 3am in the dark. She's now short sited. She can't see things far away from her, which I can see perfectly fine.
I don't understand how people can stare at a screen for hours when the screen is just a few inches from their face, I usually play video games with my Monitor a few and a half away from, but I do have a pretty big monitor sooo...
Real life? I've never heard of that server.
Yeah, it wasn't modded enough so people stopped liking it.
Nobody plays it because if you run a red light you get banned, so it sucks anyway
yesterday my friend brought a car and he hit a light pole with it and the admin banned him for ever
Legit?
Oh and there's no respawning which is annoying too.

Yes
+eucha08 GT That's so sick !

After about a year of this, I was taken in for an eye exam and was prescribed glasses for my shortsightedness. So, they assumed my needing glasses was attributed to my electronics.
My eyes are fucked and I'm only 16! My vision is blurry :(
same here :'(
Bhavya Arora :(
Grayson everything will be fine one day...I feel and hope...
Bhavya Arora I sure hope so
+Grayson go to your doctor he will know if you need glasses or not
I'd say it is effecting my eyesight. I normally read books. Recently got ipad, use it too much. I cannot focus in street. It's like my vision is not HD but 360hp. It's as powerfully lit as a torch. So shining that into retinas is worse than a book for sure.
slowly pushing away laptop lol
GAGE1207 unfortunately I was pretty close to TVs playing on my PS4 back in the day and to be honest I’m close to my I-pad writing my comment here and I have to get my eyes checked now since they are only lightly weakened to see some digital written things from far away so hope it’s nothing serious
the real question is why do some many people NEED glasses. its like everyone is slowly losing their vision.
What!? sunlight?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGH!
But in the case of the jam (or any similar sticky food), the actual jam that will come to an immediate contact with the spoon will almost surely get out of the whole pot, stack to the spoon, leaving the other jam uncontaminated :)
But it's still not nice to stick your spoon wherever you want and whenever you feel like it :P
Marcos Vinícius Yes. The bacteria from your spoon will remain in the pot, thereby contaminating it.
Because unloving you would also mean -giving up with my life
And I think, it will never be so easy to unlove you;
Because… it has always been so difficult to lose you.
I thought it was just a ploy to sell more lightbulbs...
The word Radiation is vague, modern TVs and electronics emit TONS of radiation... well... the visual kind ;)
Did you watch the video? Do you know what radiation is?
HamPuddle It is a joke for anyone who knows about the electromagnetic spectrum and the 7 types of radiation... X-ray is only one of 7 while visual light is another. The true question is do YOU know what radiation is? ;)
I was replying to ☢Fantasizing Reality☢, let's hope he was also joking
HamPuddle Oh right... I knew that... >.
Since TV's are getting brighter each year, I suppose it may be someday when they come out with a megalumen TV, someone may go blind.
what if my computer is 20 inches

Oh your computer, I thought you were talking about my dick

Always knew this was true. All the men in my mother's side of the family have long range vision problems and they're all super outdoors-y type people. I fail to believe these people that hated being inside could have the same eyeproblem by the same age I did with a different lifestyle if it was just "because of sitting too close to a screen"
You should debung the myth that Cold weather makes you sick
he already did
Why would watching a bright screen in an otherwise dark room be harmful? My computer monitor and my TV both reflect the light source in my bedroom. Turning that light off solves the problem. I watch shows and play games with the light off. Not a problem.
It's really cold in Detroit right now. I wanna sleep and eat soup. Not go outside.
I suddenly BACKOFF when he said "BACKOFF MAN" :D actually i was so close ;)
same
Its weird that you guys did this episode, because I just got my glasses today at 15 years old. My eye doctor said it happened because I was starring at too many screens
Its still true, but its just that tvs are not worse than other short range stuff
I think another reason for the myth is people who sit too close to the tv have their fat heads blocking the screen for others. Lol
I would love to get out but whats to do outside? seriously its cold and nothing to do...
exactly, back then you have people who are friendly, now everyone are assholes
I have asian parents and they're strict about me getting glasses and i dont have them yet....
that kid in the thumbnail is literally me right now
Do a vid on the myth that you can catch a cold from the cold. Whether it is from not wearing the right clothing or not wearing a hat or going outside in the winter after having just taken a shower.
A new study done by me shows that watching TV for an hour will shave an hour off of your life... because you spent it watching TV.
Go outside nah I'll pass I'll just open the window
My mom keeps on telling me that im going to need glasses in the near future because of watchung tv. Thank you for clearing my worries!
Take that mom!!!!
I can appreciate the multiple answers to just one question in the video. Helps explain how people got so confused by the myths!
Who else listened to this video to save their eyes?
THAT is an interesting study because my doctor attributed my near sightedness to the solution for resting tired eyes. I worked at a horse track for 4 years and as a photo finish op I work on a computer at the back of the stands. Every 20 minutes for 4 hours I need to look out into the middle of the track about a 100 meters away at a tote board for information I need to use. Over time I noticed it took my eyes longer and longer to switch focus from my screen in front of me to the board far away, especially at night. This caused eye strain for me. I lost my perfect vision and can't see far away under fluorescent lights.
Sitting and watching Tv kills you!?!
Eh worth it
I have noticed recently that I see a faint tracing image behind moving objects if the background is darker then the object. other then that my eye sight is pretty good and ive been gaming everyday since I was 8..im 23 now.
That's normal
Did he just say "My bro's looking balls"? LOL
I need to sit close to tvs and stuff because I'm legally blind... But everyone asks me why I look at things so close. It gets annoying repeating my self so many times -.-
People who play video games actually have faster eye reflexes. We can see things slightly faster than the average person.
I was told by a optometrist that staring at screen too long causes you blink less. Which in turns prevent cleaning and lubrication of the eyes.
i'm a cat !
I do not see how that is relevant, meow.
meow meow..choco.. ...chow?
That One Guy How about meow?
You gotta be Kitten me.
Jeremiah Baluyut I'd be lion if I said that is a good pun.
Seeker: go outside
Me: it’s corona virus
I need glasses 👓 why was video games iPads computer was invented I'm half blind it's so blurry
CreeperLogiicPlayz nice
HELP ME I NEED TO FIX MY EYES BY MY PC I PLAY ALL DAY ON MY PC HELP
Kellan Treadway try to think how playing computer is useless and how when you grow up you will look back and think"wow im so foolish back then"

so here is a question, is this more dangerous than going outside? How about if the weather outside is inhospitable for long periods of time, Extreme cold, heat. etc
What I eat carrots 24/7
I figure it'd have the same effect as when someone eats a ton of oranges to prevent sickness: minimal.
I've always wondered if watching tv or playing video games in the dark was bad for your eyes. But then again my eyes are completely fine and I've been doing both pretty much all my life lol.
Boo Baa you are so lucky
don't be naive. your postman was wearing glasses back in the day. it's genetic. jk
What if I don't sit close to the computer, I sit approximately 1.5feet away from the computer. Does this not cause as much eye strain as it would if I sat nearer? Also does this mean I can use the computer for 40mins then only look afar.
LMAO Looking balls...

Continues video for another minute
What is the effect of watching screens at a long distance? Eg min) back row in a movie theatre, max) giant signs that are on the edge of skyscrapers when in a car around 100m away
Will looking at pictures of stars do? :/
I have this issue I'm guessing that this problem isn't fixable
Up until a year ago I had superb close-up vision. I've also always had problems sleeping so found relief by leaving on the tv, but then I switched to youtube and so, because my phone has a tiny screen, I watched it from up close. Now my near vision is terrible (but my older sibling who doesn't watch youtube on his phone still has great neat sight).
my family always says that myth, and also says a few others that i think are incorrect:
a.) do not read/view television while you eat, it will make your digestion go bad because your brain is not concentrating on digesting.
b.) always watch any screen in a well lit room -that way you will never suffer an epilepsy.
c.) lemons cut grease, and thus, you should sprinkle your food with squeezed lemon juice (the more sour, the better)
d.) you should wait half an hour before doing anything after you eat
e.) there are certain drink combinations you should avoid, such as pizza and water; instead, opt for a coke.
f.) if you sleep in the whole morning and wake up to eat, you are eating lunch. They theorize that you missed one big meal of the day already and shouldn't try to compensate or call it brunch.
How many of these are close to the truth?
Sitting too close to the screen is a sign of emotional problems and poor observation skills that predicate underlying visual memory issues.
...Or you just have bad eyesight...
Proof? Because it seems you just pulled this straight out of your ass
Actually, I once read that lightbulbs might be the reason that so many more people have glasses these days. Bad eyesight seems to be much less common to people who live in tribes without electricity, or so I've read in some scientific magazine once (clearest source ever!)
The obvious point to make is that they wouldn't have opticians in those places either, but I guess you should do the research yourself if you want to be sure :p
On another note, I do get migraines if I sit too close to a screen.
It isn't crazy, but it's definitely noticable. like, look at a tv scree with words, and then imagine the exact words, with identical ghost words hovering above the real thing, slightly see through. i feel like I should get my eyes checked out, it's been kinda recent that I notice this
1:53 Just looked at somewhere far away...
The pupil gets tensed while focusing close objects & viceversa, looking far away is soothing for the eyes,
So decide for yourself.
If I had a 20 minute break I wouldn't be watching this
the way i look at it, looking at a television does harm your eyes depending on how you are looking at it. If you are looking at it whilst you are in the dark, and constantly switching to look into a dark area, it will put a strain on your eyes. AND YES will indeed damage your eyes.
What happens if you look at a laser pointer with a telescope
And here I am scared if ima go blind even though I sit like 1 or 2 metres away from the screen!
Yep, mom used to yell at me about this. Lol
I'm 12, I have had nothing to do for months so I stare at the screen for 8 hours a day and my left eye is fucked.
My sister would stay on her laptop for 4+ hours a day, staying up until about 3am in the dark. She's now short sited. She can't see things far away from her, which I can see perfectly fine.
does it work if i look at my windows background?
I don't understand how people can stare at a screen for hours when the screen is just a few inches from their face, I usually play video games with my Monitor a few and a half away from, but I do have a pretty big monitor sooo...
