Opened the top cover of my gas range to clean it up thoroughly. The metal sticking out beside the igniter is a thermocouple sensor connected to a solenoid valve where gas pass thru. It shuts off the supply of gas in case there is gas leak or temperature too high (not sure which of the two). Safety feature I guess.
Thank you for this video - super helpful. I used white (distilled) vinegar, cos that's all I had, with an old toothbrush (also left to dry overnight) - and it's worked a treat. Thank you! :)

I didn't have rubbing alcohol, so instead as a quick fix (after putting the burner on for some time did not help) I switched on the underneath oven to 350 F and let it sit there for 10 mins. I think that heats and warms the underneath layer of the cook top and helps get any moisture stuck there. The clicking stopped for me after that

Hello all, Kenmore gas cook top, 20 yrs old but never used. New condition. I am curious about how it was engineered. The knob has to be turned past "high" to initiate the spark ignitor by entering a 3 inch venturi tube. That is a lot of gas spewing out before ignition. Should I install it in a home with kids? Thoughts?

Turn off the power, check all connections are okay, turn on power and check. Anything more complicated and you really should call in an expert. Don’t mess with electricity if you’re not an expert.
Really happy it helped you Francesco. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please hit the subscribe button and check out a few of my other videos for more tips and great content.
1 - Check someone hasn’t turned the cooker off at the wall. 2 - Check the cooker hasn’t been unplugged. 3 - Check the consumer unit to make sure you haven’t ‘tripped’ one of the RCDs. 4 - Check the plug to make sure you haven’t tripped the fuse. These are solutions for an electrical system in England. If you’re from somewhere else, comment below where you’re from and my viewers may be able to help you out. Please let me know how you get on.
Try pulling each drawer out as far as it will go, then, when it's at it's full extent, lift the front of the drawer up and pull out again. That usually gets the drawer to come out. Let me know how you get on.
My pleasure absrose. If you appreciatethe help and wanna show appreciation for not having to call a repairman out. Feel free to buy me a coffee on the link below. Cheers. www.buymeacoffee.com/essentialhandy1
I’m usually scared of anything electrical but i wanted to try the second method where you turn switch off but fire is still burning. Is this quite safe? My ignition has been clicking for months and it’s driving me crazy!
Essentially it’s two different fuel sources. The gas provides the continuous flame. The electricity literally only provides the spark to ignite the flame. Once lit, there’s no need for electricity, so you dont need the gas on. If your stove has been clicking for months, it’s more likely to be dirt than water but try lighting all burners first, as it’s the quicker of the two options. Please remember to subscribe, hit the bell icon and choose to be notified for all my new videos and watch a few of my other videos too.

Hmmmm, I'm not 100% sure. I tend to use white spirit/turps for removing sticky residues, cleaning paint from my hands,/off of surfaces etc., and meths for degreasing. In my expeeience white spirit dooesn't degrease as well as meths. That said, if that's what you have. Use it sparingly and wait for it to dry before you igniote the burner (it is petrol based after all!!!) and see if it works for you. If not, you can try some meths and conduct your own investigation. If you do, I'd be really interested to hear the results of how both performed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@essentialhandyman yh I just brought a place it had never been cleaned all 4 was going crazy I gutted all 4 and now only two are doing it but no rubbing alcohol on hand so will grab some tomorrow to be safe but wow u shouldve seen the state of mine
@@angelahowarth506 Interesting feedback. I'm not surprised as I'd expect meths to degrease better than white spirit. One last question though. Are you sure the burner isn't clicking because it's wet? If you fire them all up and leave them running for a short period, it may dry out any reesidual moisture (like mine did) and solve the clicking.
Do you know the white stuff surrounding the igniter it looks like a ceramic that you sounded what if that is cracked and broken on one side expose in the whole igniter travel size?
The white surround on my cooker is plastic. It's there to insulate the metal, so that the spark comes out of the section at the top of it. I've never had a cooker where that white section broke. However, I would say watch what the spark does and act accordingly. Does it still spark only towards the gas burner or does it spark in other directions?
Welcome Gerwyn. I’m glad it helped. Please subscribe for more great tips. And check out my other videos. One of them (tool haul I think), features a hat I think you’d appreciate.

it's my oven that's the problem for me, when I turn the knob to light the oven the gas comes on but ingniter keeps clicking and the only way to stop it is to turn off the knob to off or turn the switch on the wall to off and then the gas goes off. ..my top burners are fine.. so, is it the same principle that the igniter may have some grease or oil on it?
Thanks for watching and commentig Tina. I guess it's the same principle but as the oven gets so hot, it's unlikely to be water in the oven, so more likely to be something on the burner. Sounds like you're gonna have to get your head and shoulders in there and clean the burner off. Please remember to subscribe and watch a few of my other vidoes, for more helpful tips.
When it happens it always makes all of the stoves click at the same time. If you follow the advice in the video, it should solve it for you. Good luck Marchello.

Hi Beaver. Sometimes it doesn't work and you've got to repeat the process. Just run the heat long enough to make sure it's completely dry and after that, it's a case of making sure you are meticulous with the cleaning and sanding. I find sand paper gets rid of much more dirt than washing, cleaning etc. Good luck and let me know if you manage to stop it this time. Ps, don't forget to hit the subscribe button. Thanks.
By his accent, he is a Brit. They use 220v as their regular elect juice. Hence the plugin switch in regular, house wiring. In US we run 120v. Stove, still is wired for 220v at the panel. In our case a switch cannot conveniently be wired in.
@@BasilRBhan Hi Basil. Thanks for watching. You're almost right. Yes I'm a Brit and we're almost at 220V. Over here we used to be 240V but are now powered by 230V. in our single phase (typical household) supply. It's really interesting to hear that you don't have similar cut off switches over there. It makes us realise how convenient it is and how lucky we are over here. Well, I'm assuing it is a good thing. I'm sure there must be a good reason (apart from the safety aspect of you having 120v over there) for you not having an isolating switch. If you know why you don't have a switch, I'd be really interested to learn. Cheers.
I’m having this issue, only one hob is sparking just like in your video and I cooked using that one last night while the clicking continued, tried it again this morning and it’s still clicking, everything looks spotless so not sure why the clicking is still continuing
*update* for some reason the ring that was clicking/sparking wasn’t the one with the issue, noticed one of the other rings was a bit dirty around the ignition so cleaned that one off and it is no longer clicking 🙏 thank god
Glad you resolved it. This is an issue which will periodically happen every few moths or so I think. You've just gotta keep going through the process and keep it clean if you can. E.g. I tend to cook on my front left burner most of the time but I know this week my rear right burner started clicking if I use it. Looks like I'll be following my own advice (again) tomorrow, to get rid of that infernal noise. Thanks for watching and commenting and please remember to like the video and subscribe for more helpful advice.
@@essentialhandyman yes we do the same it’s only really one or 2 burners that get used and because only one was sparking it was just that one that needed cleaning, although something must have spilled onto the back one at some point because after cleaning that the clicking stopped 🤷♂️ haha
Glad to hear it helped you David. Please remember to subcribe to the channel, hit the notification bell and check out some of my other videos for more great advice.

My Jenn-air works the for the first part but once I turn off the stove, it started clicking again. I couldn’t clean it because there’s no way to shut off my stove, the switch that you have is no where in sight 😫
I think you may be in the states, is that right? I've heard you don't have switched sockets out there, so localised isolation would be a problem. If you have a main fuse board, you could turn off the cooker from the main switch, double checking it's safe of course, and do the cleaning with the cooker isolated from the mains. Would that work for you?
That’s definitely one of the causes. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please remember to give me a subscribe and check out a few of my other videos for more great tips and hacks.
Sometimes what you think is clean, isn't clean enough. It happens to me too. You've just gotta go back through the cleaning process and spend some more time cleaning all the contacts etc.
Thank you, I just took it apart cleaned it again and it's still clicking. I think it's about 30 years old. Maybe I need to replace it? I used alcohol a q tip. slid a butter knife in between to make sure there was nothing clogging it, but click click click. @@essentialhandyman
all 4 of my burners keep clicking even when they are lite. I tried cleaning as I spilled coffee on the top of the stove and cleaned up real good but the4 clicking or igniters keep sounding. I tried just using the gas to dry up things but I will try again. Kind of weird why it doesn't stop. I even opened up the stove to see if coffee was inside. it wasn't inside but when I put it back together click click click.........
Sometimes it does that, you think you've dried and cleaned it and it keeps clicking. If it does, you just gotta start again and do even more cleaning, as what you did wasn't enough. It's a pain but that's the only answer I have.

Thanks Mate, I followed your sanding technique and it seems to have worked
Great to hear Mr Researcher. Cheers.
I aoopreciate the lesson Alex. I'll try to remember those parts. There's no point in living unless you learn something new every day! Cheers.

The clicking stopped for me after that
Hi Sanket. That's brilliant feedback. Thanks for posting it. I'm glad you got the issue sorted. Please don't forgt to subscribe for more great tips and advice. And check out my latest videos while you're here.
Thank you sooo much!! The clicker thing was going on for 24hours and the keeping the flame on for a few mins stopped it. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped my friend. That clicking drives you potty doesn't it? If it happens again (and you have a UK tyope system where you can turn the appliance off at the wall / plug). Turning it off after it's been ignited, stops the clicking.

Is it not dangerous? Mine started in the afternoon but for some reason I can't fix it now but only in the next hours. No problem?
Hi the metal thing sticking up is a thermocouple to shut the gas off if there is a flame failure.
Thanks for the info Dave. Much appreciated. 👍🏼
Thank you for such a simple advising video..I followed yr instruction without the cleaning lliquid..but used sand ppr and a cotton bud to clean and..Bingo after 2 attempts..the annoying tik tik noise finally stopped..Thanks once again...

Can we use other staff for rubbing like dishwasher soap instead of alcohol
Hi Besmellah. Hmm, I'm not sure, I've only used products which don't leave a residue when they dry. I've not tried soap as unless you wash it off with water (which is one of the things were trying to avoid) it will leave a residue. I've added an Amazon Affiliate Link to the video description for surgical spirit/Rubbing Alcohol. Which should assist you.

Helpful video! I'm still having this issue and have tried your advice, would you have any more ideas? Or do I need to call a handyman/electrician?
This pretty much works almost every time. Give it another go. Try leaving burners on longer. Then try cleaning and sanding more thoroughly. Then try burners again. It should work.

Thoughts?
Thank you - your solution worked. Really appreciate it.

How do I fix one that the igniter doesn’t come on at all? Mine suddenly stopped sparking
Hi , I can't find the plug to turn the electric off to start to clean it , we have drawers underneath the hob but can't get them out
Try pulling each drawer out as far as it will go, then, when it's at it's full extent, lift the front of the drawer up and pull out again. That usually gets the drawer to come out. Let me know how you get on.
I know this is a year old but thank you sooo much! Was driving me nuts 😂

U reckon white spririt would work as good ?

@@essentialhandyman I'm trying white spirit now and it hasnt worked, cleaned it multiple times and let dry and still clicking.
Thanks so much for this, it did work I just had to give it a few minutes

In the middle of trying to fix my oven, what does it mean if I turn it off at the electrical board but the top still clicks?
Are you saying that you think you’ve turned it off but it is still making the clicking noise?

it's my oven that's the problem for me, when I turn the knob to light the oven the gas comes on but ingniter keeps clicking and the only way to stop it is to turn off the knob to off or turn the switch on the wall to off and then the gas goes off. ..my top burners are fine.. so, is it the same principle that the igniter may have some grease or oil on it?
Thanks for watching and commentig Tina. I guess it's the same principle but as the oven gets so hot, it's unlikely to be water in the oven, so more likely to be something on the burner. Sounds like you're gonna have to get your head and shoulders in there and clean the burner off. Please remember to subscribe and watch a few of my other vidoes, for more helpful tips.
Any solution if all 4 stoves clicking?
When it happens it always makes all of the stoves click at the same time. If you follow the advice in the video, it should solve it for you. Good luck Marchello.

Hi. I have tried both methods and clicking still going on. Have good spark and gas but clicking not going. What can i try next pls?
Thanks.
Spraying contact cleaner inside the switch fixed mine, no more clicking !
That sounds like a great idea. I'll give that a go myself next time it starts clicking. What type of contact cleaner did you use?
Thanks Mate! I wish my stove had a switch on the wall to turn off the power to the unit! (American codes do not require it, alas.)
Thanks for watching and commenting Jeffrey. Feel free to subscribe for more great tips.

So why does cleaning it stop it from clicking? What is the theory behind it? Thank you.
I'm not 100% on the scence but I think it's to dirt with a build up of crud acting as a conductor. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please remember to subscribe to the channel and give me a big thumbs up. Cheers.
Thank you
I was able to fix the problem 😊
My Jenn-air works the for the first part but once I turn off the stove, it started clicking again. I couldn’t clean it because there’s no way to shut off my stove, the switch that you have is no where in sight 😫
I think you may be in the states, is that right? I've heard you don't have switched sockets out there, so localised isolation would be a problem. If you have a main fuse board, you could turn off the cooker from the main switch, double checking it's safe of course, and do the cleaning with the cooker isolated from the mains. Would that work for you?
I found that happens if one is wet. I use to go away when it dried.
That’s definitely one of the causes. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please remember to give me a subscribe and check out a few of my other videos for more great tips and hacks.
Thank you! The noise was driving me crazy. Turning on the burners for 3 minutes helped.

My stove won't stop clicking and it's clean and not wet. What do you recommend?
Nice clean stove
