If you have a horseshoe malfunction, you should NOT move directly into emergency procedures. You should first pull your main pilot out. If that doesn't pull your main canopy out, THEN emergency procedures. Don't ditch your main before you've even tried to use it.
about to take aff1 and i was wondering about that. i would hope my instructor would give it a yank for me but imagine the look on their faces if i got to it first. hahahahahaha
My first AFF instructor was teaching me to do a cutaway with both hands on the handle. My next instructor, at another dropzone, strictly told me to never do that way and to use one hand on the handle. I also think using one hand will be faster for a cutaway emergency.
Interesting USPA teaches bot hands on the handle...I chopped in a high speed spin once and actually landed with a stowed reserve handle...I am now of the "grab both handle"...shit happens fast.
Back in 1978? I had to "Cut away" my Main Chute, I was on a 15 jump Freefall course. We jumped from the bottom wing on a Cessna Biplane and the first 4 were with a Static Line. The Parachute was one of the old round ones with a Double L mesh opening at the rear to give forward thrust. I completed the first 3 without any problems so only one more and I get to Freefall. The forth one I had a problem as I got what is called a "Line Over" This is where one of the Lines goes over the top of the Parachute rather than down to the harness. So it looks like a Bra rather than a half Ball. I had to "Cut away" the Main and deploy the Reserve Chute. It bing a Life saver not a Limb saver asit is smaller I pulled all the ligaments in my Right Leg. Although it took Months to heal I am now Medically banned from Parachuting.
This is the exact video I watched during my ground school training, I come back to it every month. fly on, BLUE SKIES!!!!
It's just pictures of canopy malfunctions during my AFF training. This video is AWESOME!
Friday Freakout is a gold mine.
I had my only cutaway on jump #5.
It was a bag lock.
I remembered my EPs and landed safely.

My first AFF instructor told me the same.
That was an excellent video!
Loved how the different scenarios were shown as they happened

USPA doesn't teach this. It depends on the instructor.

Is it there; Is it square; Is it controllable
My couches told me " is it there? Is it square? Can I flare? "
My instructor called it the 4 S's...is it Square, is it Stable, is the Slider down and is it Steerable !
Sooo helpful thank you very much!! 😃
