  • In the first episode of the Isla project, we discuss the plants that call Isla home, as well as the means by which they reproduce. Pollinators are vitally important on a planet like Isla, so we also take some time to discuss how various animal species have coevolved with the flora of their environment.
    All art was made by and belongs to me unless explicitly stated otherwise.

    Alright I've gotten a million comments over the years correcting this, and while I appreciate the interest I've gotten tired of reading them all.
    To correct the record: Isla does rotate! There was an error when writing the script, and what I meant to say was "the planet does not rotate relative to its axis of orbit ". The unique property of tidally locked bodies is that a single period of their axial rotation is equal to a single orbital period, or in other words their day is as long as their year. As a result of this there is no distributed light exposure across the planet and instead we see the classic "eyeball earth" archetype. One side of Isla (the substellar, or northern hemisphere) experiences constant exposure to it's star, where as the opposing side (the antistellar, or southern hemisphere) is plunged into a perpetual night. But importantly - it does rotate!
    In the near future I'm planning on making an introductory "episode 0" of sorts which will go over all of the fundamental information needed to understand the project, and I'll correct this error as well.
    Thanks ✌

      I'm curious to know if you have included orbital eccentricity in your Isla project. This would mean that the planet is not completely tidally locked, but will "librate", and the sun would appear to wobble back and forth around its average position relative to the planet. This would imply that the terminator is not completely fixed: The sun viewed from the terminator would appear to rise and set at the same spot,and the terminator will experience a day and night cycle.

    • @Oliver_but_digital
      @Oliver_but_digital  3 місяці тому +1

      There is a little bit of eccentricity, but not enough for a full rising and setting of the sun in most areas of the planet. Instead more just an oscillation of its position in the sky. I will go into more detail in the future when I make an "overview episode 0" @@christmassnow3465

      It's ok. I still loved the video, and coincidentally, was reading your explanation as the video began, and the error played by and I chuckled, unaire.exactly why... not a huge mistake tho, and, relatively, if you were on the surface, you'd sure think the space rock you inhabited sure didn't rotate lol

    • @christmassnow3465
      @christmassnow3465 19 днів тому

      The issue of synchronous orbiting and rotation due to tidal locking raises a new question: As rotation still occurs, it is expected to have a small but maybe noticeable Coriolis effect on the atmosphere. If correct, air convection will not be completely radially symmetrical like the "eyeball". As an example, look at Venus' slow rotation: Satellite image of the atmosphere reveals a V-shaped pattern showing how Venusian air currents move.

Snaiad is victim of this, in my opinion. It's highly unlikely that a phylum of alien 'animals' would evolve to have such a similar endoskeleton as Terrestrial vertebrates. As a result, I'd place Snaiad below projects like Isla, Anu, and Ilion in terms of "scientific accuracy" (as meaningless as this term really is in *speculative* biology)...

    The idea of niche construction tends not to be explored by your competitors. Such things as "ridge gardens" and ecosystems underneath of suspended "platophytes," as well as constructed niches like the shaded regions under megaeodrontis, are novel. I also liked the juxtaposition of K-strategic vertically elongated pupils and r-strategic horizontally elongated pupils on the same beast. It made me think that the K-strategic eyes might have emerged by r-strategic ruminants that learned to climb trunks into the understorey, where they learned to brachiate only after evolving a secondary K-strategic eye. I couldn't be more impressed. I've watched all of your competitors.

    This project has absolutely stunning visuals! In fact, it's probably the best-looking speculative evolution project I've seen in years, rivaled maybe only by project Serina. The only little bit of criticism I can mention would be about the general look of a planet from space - I guess there should have been a blackish-colored belt where the main biomass of flora is located, just as we see our Earth as green from space where forests grow.
    Also, I am absolutely thrilled to know more about kinetesynthetic life! That's something I've never seen before in speculative evolution 🤓

      Great question! I assume you mean stuff like leaves or more plates. Two answers: first, the wind severely limits exposed plants from covering large surface area , however I am open to the idea that sheltered plants have the potential for surface are expansion. Second, something I didn't touch on in this video is that many communal plants practice "nutrient sharing", a process which essentially allows them to pass sugars between each other. This means that plants have to rely less on their own individual photosynthesis.

    • @shestewa6581
      @shestewa6581 2 роки тому +10

      @@Oliver_but_digital thanks for replying 😀
      I don’t necessarily mean leaves but other areas of the plant that are open to either direct photosynthesis or to evolution of additional photosynthetic appendages (we could call them leaves I guess). Many of these plant analogues you’ve described in your taxonomical study of this planet have huge surface areas by virtue of their reproductive protrusions or large and enhanced roots.
      In plants on Earth, all green parts, including stems and fruits when green involve chloroplasts to increase photosynthesis. I see these huge amazingly designed plants where the plate is only a 3m or so part at the centre with huge dozens of meters appendages directly in the sunlight too (root or gonostsalk) All it would take is one mutation that causes expression of their version of photosynthetic pigment in non plate areas to have a massive advantage. Initially when I saw the spots on your larger “trees” I assumed this to be a version of that but it was a different species
      Surely a species like this would evolve to have auxiliary photosynthesis on the other limbs at the very least or to have additional plates grow on the roots to increase proper photosynthetic area (perhaps as a form of asexual reproduction? Grow a plate that photosynthesises and dump it when it becomes less valuable or when struggling, possibly allowing it to get carried off by the wind or to struggle below?)
      Again I love this so far but given the examples of all photosynthetic life on Earth (not a great sample size I know) I think that the photosynthetic restriction could be loosened from the plate. A “plant” that could primary produce across that huge cross section of area would have a huge advantage and not necessarily even go the detriment of its peers for species propagation.
      Please take this as constructive criticism, not any retraction. I love worldbuilding and love yours so far. I love how your plant analogies work in addition also but I think that the photosynthetic restriction to the centre (I know the “xenoangiosperms” seem to have black by their “flowers” which is good) would be selected away very quickly.

    • @Oliver_but_digital
      @Oliver_but_digital  2 роки тому +20

      You bring up some great points! Having a constant source of sunlight made my original thinking be that the plants would require less total surface area, however I agree that more photosynthetic diversification of roots and reproductive tendrils would be expected. I'll play around with this more in the future. Perhaps plants growing farther south (and thus exposed to weaker light) would be those that most require these kinds of adaptations.

    • @rateeightx
      @rateeightx 2 роки тому +5

      @@Oliver_but_digital Actually that's interesting what you mentioned about sheltered plants, I presume there are mountains and canyons and stuff on this planet? If that's the case there could be plants around those subjected to much weaker winds, That could likely thus grow to be taller with more parts.

    I noticed an error about tidal locking.
    Tidal locking isn't a body lacking rotation on its axis. Tidal locking is a body's rotation speed being the same as its orbit, meaning one side is always facing the star it revolves around. If the body had no rotation at all, different sides of the body would face the sun as it moved.
    Think about it if you put a cup of the group and move around it. If you don't rotate at all, keep your head facing forward, and walk in a circle around the cup on the floor, all sides of your body would eventually be able to be seen by the cup. Thats not being Tidally locked.
    Now keep your head facing the cup the entire time as you walk around it. The cup only sees your front side, that is Tidal locking, but notice you ARE rotating, just at the same speed you are revolving around the cup.
    Sorry for the nitpick lol.

    teeny nitpick: in tidal locking, the rotation period slows to match the orbital period rather than stopping, so that one face is always presented to the locked body. if rotation stopped than the face presented to the locked body would change as it's orbital period progresses. This entire series is one of the most beautiful things I've seen. Everything just hits that itch of the specbio genre perfectly for me. It's a perfect balance of being somehow both creative and grounded in reality. I'm really looking forward to where this goes next!
    One humble suggestion or inquiry I have is if you're planning anything like rainforests? I imagine with the high winds traveling from overseas, they're probably bound to bring in a good amount of water for at least some areas (and frequent cloud cover could also make some spots more habitable).

    I am absolutely blown away by the quality of this project! I’m sure that this will grow to be one of the great spec evo projects here on UA-cam , please keep it up! I can’t wait to learn about the kinesynthetic plants!

    This is so cool love this it's so inspiring. It's sad that it doesn't have a lot of views and I hope more people get to see this great project.

    This is probably my favorite speculative evolution project yet! My only suggestion (and a small one) would be for the english 'translations' for all of the Latin scientific names to be included below the names themselves, like I've seen in a few other speculative evolution projects!

    Man, the creativity here is insane! I'm gonna instantly subscribe to you to help supporting your channel and work! Keep up, man!
    Also the planet's arid setting really reminds me of planet Arrakis from Frank Herbert's dune! I would hope to see some sandworm like creatures slithering beneath the sand!

    The art, the narration, the attention to detail, and the biodiversity is all perfect. I've never seen a project this professional and complete before. When will there be a book? I will have to review it on my blog.
