Carroll took two years to write "Alyssa Lies." The song was so emotionally painful to write that he got migraines while writing. It is based on a true story of a girl that wasn't saved in time. It seemed to Carroll that no matter what he wrote, he would never be satisfied with it. When he realized that he would not be able to make the song perfect, he tried the best he could to make it realistic and sufficiently emotional. After three years, he felt it was as heartfelt as he could make it, and recorded the song!!!!
My wife and I adopted our little girl when she was 2 1/2. It took me about 2 years to get her out of an abusive home thru the court system. Her biological mother tormented us for about 12 years after that. She died of an OD in a cheap hotel room after selling herself to a stranger. My angel is 23 now. She introduced me to this sound when she was about 15. She and I sat and listened to it together and cried.
As a kid I hated country music but as I get older I find myself listening to it the most. I've realized that I see more of a connection between myself and many of the feelings put into country music.
This seems similar to my experience. I grew up with it but listened to pop and rock as a young teen before coming back to it bc it put everything I felt and didn’t know how to say into words. Learned the vocab since then but still love it.
ditto! Now it took the Grateful Dead to migrate me over, but I made it. Now its all about outlaw country, not the pop nashville crap. All those hit songs are written 75% by outlaw artists who want no part of the Nashville rapists and thieves, but wanna play bars and maybe Billy Bobs in Fort Worth
This is a terrible story, but sadly, if you remember at the beginning, he said it was based on a true story, and I doubt just one. If you read the back story on the song JMC took almost 2 years to write this because it was so hard for him to do. I think the best take away from this song is to remember as adults, we need to listen to our kids and react fast when they tell us these things about their friends. Thank you for watching and sharing your honest and open thoughts on this.
He wrote the song based off his personal experience. It took him years to complete it bc of how much it effected him. He made the song bc it was his way of trying to help save other children since he wasn’t able to save his daughter’s friend in time.❤
Boils my blood when the innocent are abused in any way. I was asked to be in law enforcement straight out of the Army and refused. I can't hold my temper well enough in situations like this.
Jason Michael Carroll is one of my favorite artists and a wonderful person. He plays this at his shows and it always gets me, even more now that I have a baby girl and, another on the way. Got to meet him multiple times, talk about our time in the service (he is a Marine), he always remembers me and wants to talk about what has gone on since we last met. Love that guy.
I saw the title and I thought “Oh boy, this’ll be a good reaction.” Then the intro of him being joined by his child, and I was like “Oh no…” This song hits hard, and hits parents the hardest - especially those with little girls.
New subscriber. That's been my life since the age of 4. I'm 66 and I figure God thought I could take it, and the memories. If the rapes, beatings, bruises and broken bones saved one other child, teenager or woman from the same thing then, I served my purpose.
I love watching reactions to this song. 13 years ago, my wife and I adopted an abused 18 month old little girl out of the foster care system. Ironically her name is Alyssa.
Kellie Pickler at the CMA awards tears me up too. The emotion gets to her so hard that she doubles over and barely croak out the last few words. It's unreal!
This video should be watched at school every year. Jason wrote this. He said he would get migraine headaches trying to finish it. Country is about real life situations. That's why I love it
They really threw you in the deep end with this one. Three wooden crosses by Randy Travis and Temporary Home by Carrie Underwood are AMAZING story telling. For upbeat stuff Toby Kieth or Brad Paisley have some great songs.
"Alyssa lies with Jesus, because there's nothing anyone *would* do." That line always hits me hard. It wasn't that nobody could do anything; it's that nobody would do anything. Beautiful and tragic song.
I can keep it together up to that sentence but after that I can't, I just loose it every time. Even now after many years. But these things keep happening, kids getting abuses and killed by their own parents and relatives and it seems the law is not doing it's job efficiently.
This song wasn't around when I was going through what I did as a kid, but I'm happy it exists now. I know it's not cool to like country music, BUT I can tell you that there's no other genre of music that gives you a roller coaster of emotions like country. You really need to listen to Concrete Angel, Don't Take The Girl and I Believe! Cheers from Australia mate
I agree...but if you watch don't take the girl , you have to watch it all the way to the end, the very end. So many reactors don't and they don't get how it ends.
I wish someone spoke up when I was going through this at school. I've spoken to old teachers, and they knew I was sad all the time but never stepped in.
The first few times I heard this it broke me. I figured listening to it many times would ease up. But after about 100 times it still tears at me. I can't understand how he was able to record this song. I think people like seeing your reaction videos because it helps reassure them that human emotions still exist. The world can seem awfully cold at times. Great job.
I'm a retired investigative social worker for adult and child abuse. This song brings back memories of kids situations that NO ONE should have to shoulder. Kids need love and protection. Not to be hurt or neglected. They lie most times because they are told, and get, worse abuse at home if anyone finds out. So they are terrified all the time. May God bless each and every child. They are gifts from God and should be cherished.
I grew up half my childhood in Foster care, I was adopted at ten years old and was very blessed. This has to be the most real reaction to this song I've ever seen!!!
I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times already but every single time I hear it tears come to my eyes. Abuse is still a terrible problem that plagues the world and it’s sad because the children who suffer it have no control over it. Great human reaction bro you just got a new subscriber
Ikr. I can’t listen to this much tbh even though I love it bc my mom was that abused child growing up and hearing her story makes it hard to be anything but angry for children who face that.
Is that the song where a little girls dad kills her mum and she hides and when someone says Jesus isn't real she says he is because he was there that night? I'm heavily paraphrasing here btw xxx
The part that kills me every time, that most people don't catch, is the last chorus. "Cuz there was nothing anyone WOULD do" he didn't say could do but would do. People knew it was happening and did nothing.
It's pretty common, especially for smaller towns, for people to absolutely know what's going on and never say a word. Oh, they'll gossip about it to each other but never tell the cops or cps. They think ita "family business" and/ or "you shouldn't tell someone how to raise their kids. That's their business". I was in my late 30s when I learned my ENTIRE town of around 1200 people knew what was happening to us. NO one ever said a word. That still pisses me off to this day.
When this came out I was in high skl. My English teacher played this IN CLASS and had us write what we thought. I WAS UGLY CRYING IN CLASS!! It’s a true story and HEARTBREAKING. Something needs to change in this world to protect our kids!
Me too but u wasn't just crying because of the story, I was going thru abuse from my mom but I still wouldn't tell anyone and it's stories like this song that make me feel so lucky that I was finally able to get out of it with my late grandmother's help
My Man!!…. The best part of this reaction, was when you stopped everything and told that baby girl you Loved her!!!! Keep it up Dad, those moments will ALWAYS matter. Proud of ya.
I seen Jason Michael Carroll years ago at Pickwick Tennessee concert w hometown singer Darryl Worley river run n Charley Daniel s to . Jason song n him just came out years later uhh I cry still ❤
Mr. Sebs Duran, My older brother Lenny and I were abused by both of our parents, Lenny was deafened in one ear and our mother, during YET ANOTHER one of her rage filled bearings caused a Detached Retina in my left eye not long after I started the 6th grade. I had to have emergency eye surgery then, but I was never able to see out of that eye ever again, in fact I was recently diagnosed as going completely blind in my right eye. The eye specialists have all told me that since my right eye has been doing the job for both eyes, that has worn my right eye down for all these years and that there is nothing that can “cure or fix” my right eye, and it is getting darker and darker to see. PARENTS, PLEASE LOVE YOUR CHILDREN, THEY ARE GIFTS TO YOU FROM THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY HIMSELF😊.
Heard this song many years ago and many times since. Very emotional. Sadness, anger, love and a sad sense of no more pain. Country music can do that to you. Agree with previous comment you should react to There Goes My Life, as a father you will understand and appreciate it so well
I get more emotional watching your reactions than I do from the songs, but thats because Ive heard these songs for years. Love seeing them thru your eyes. God bless you.
I think we need to feel. And hearing and seeing it through music. I have cried so many times watching reactions. I’ve watched this a million times and I cried again. That is what’s so great about music it can make you feel things of happiness, Love, Pain, Anger, frustration and more. It has saved my life literally. My childhood was horrific and music saved me!
my granddaughter had a friend just like Alyssa .... but being a proud mom/grandma my 4 sons got her out of that situation before anything bad happened ... my sons said they remembered this song from me playing it in the house ...
It always gets to me when people say "No...I can't watch this"....yeah, you can. If kids can watch their siblings being beaten or look down at their bruises and try to figure out how to hide them, as adults, such it up and watch what goes on every single day. If it really affects you...join in to help instead of paying lip service.
Has it ever occurred to you the reason people can’t watch this is they’ve lived it? I’m 65, and when I hear this song I’m immediately transformed into crying, bruised little boy.
@davidschmidbauer3930 I should have been more clear...my apologies. I meant that people who haven't been through that should watch it. As a rape survivor and a domestic violence survivor, watching videos about those two things rips me into pieces. I completely understand that some can't watch this video. I do wish they would put a trigger warning at the beginning of the videos that are about child abuse, DV, sexual assault, etc... I hope that clears up what I failed to include in my comment. Thank you for pointing it out. I am very sorry that it has that affect on you.
@@larynanntapp6333 no problem, it’s a great song with a great message. I agree it needs to be seen as a public service message. I can watch it and cry. I can’t listen to it driving though if it comes on the radio. It takes me to a place of pain and fear that I will never get over I guess. I understand why people can’t listen to it though.
I have yet to see a reactor not cry watching this music video. I am very glad this video keeps resurfacing, because as a child like Alyssa, I had wished someone said something.
Good country songs for dads with daughters: I loved her first, Cleaning this gun, Butterfly Kisses, Stealing Cinderella. (All good for tearing fathers’ heartstrings)
As someone who was severely abused by my grandparents this song just hits different. People that abuse children should be ended in the most violent way possible. I cant imagine beating my kids, how can you do that to someone you love and are supposed to protect?
3 things that will send me from Zero to Jail time real fast is a man hurting a child or a dog or putting his hands on a woman. I just lose it. Good review as always Sebs. I know I am late to the party and I am slowly catching up with a lot of your reviews but God bless to you and your wife and kiddo. I am 47 yrs old former military former Country radio DJ and I truly feel like you are a good man and a great husband and an amazing example for a lot of other men out there.
Watching your reaction was probably one of the hardest to watch. You saying what you had said, and I’m sitting here knowing what’s coming at the end. It kicks you in the heart for sure
I have heard this song many times. It never gets easier to listen to it. As a father of 3 girls, I cannot imagine ever laying a hand on any of them. This is another one of those songs that will bring a tear to your eye, no matter of age, race, economic situation or gender. All abuse needs to stop. Wish I had the answers.
Sir I am proud for you to do country it is by far the most meaningful genre. And I am proud of you for showing and sharing you emotions. I trained myself not to cry from a young age because I saw it as weakness, I wanted to be able to carry the world and my family on my back and never break with the things I saw as a firefighter. I respect that you are willing to show that it’s ok to cry for men because sometimes we get overwhelmed to.
Man I just found your channel and after this and Jamey Johnson, I can tell I'm gonna enjoy your channel. As far as you not liking country it happens. Pretty sure 90% of the country don't like country music. If you go back to early country and even into the 00-10s it's mainly storytelling. Idk about newer country don't really listen to it. I was raised country until Ricky Martin came out with livin la vida loca, and that changed everything. I listen to all kinds of music now and I enjoy a lot of genres. If you want a banger country playlist I can hook you up.
I feel that. I love older mainly but I’ve enjoyed many newer songs too. Some very much stick to the old way or writing songs, just done in new ways. Still beautiful imo but I mainly still go back to the old ones 😂
We'll have you hooked in no time. Luckily they aren't all sad. But most do tell a story. One my may enjoy is by a lost Legend Chris LeDoux named "This Cowboy's Hat"... Weit till you hear Martina McBride...and what a beautiful child you have there.
if you want another heartbreaking country song Concrete Angel will break you down. Martina Mcbride has many songs that cover difficult subjects including child abuse.i had a hard time listening to these songs before but after i had my kids it was next to impossible. the world needs to do better by our children
When I saw your daughter with you on the video, I knew it was going to hit you HARD. I cry everytime I hear this song even though I have heard it a lot.
I like SOME country. Johnny Cash can make me cry, and not all positive. Not all upbeat. Beautiful voice that can make the pain we all feel at times....shared.
I would have submitted it with my handle attached. These stories are important. They are not made for money. A lot of country music is for money but the true artists to communicate. Great reaction. I've watched it 3 times. Your emotions are justified.
Hey Sebs, this is the amazing thing about country music. It is one of the only genres of music that isn't scared of telling you the story about real issues and is unapologetic about praising God.
I just want to say that i love these sad country songs the most out of every other song or type of music. Because it makes you appreciate what you have and the life you lived.
The little girl by John Michael Montgomery is a great one,it will definitely pull at your ❤️, Thank You Sir for your reaction 🙏 That is a beautiful little sweetheart you have, I bet she's a daddy's girl, I was 😇 hope you and your family have a blessed evening 🙏 sending you love from Lafayette Georgia 🍑
I have several songs that are amazing! Love all the ones I’ve seen you do so far. Best 2 country songs ever are The Dance by Garth Brooks, and topping that is The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost by Craig Morgan, singing on the Kelly Clarkson show.
I never grew up listening to nor paying any attention to country music but sometimes it’s all about timing. I found country when the time was right for me. I’m 50 now and got into country in 1993 when I was 21. I was driving a company truck and didn't bother changing the radio station from whoever drove it last. I was just in the frame of mind to get lost in a song and the right one came on (All These Years by Sawyer Brown) and it stayed in my ears, my mind, and in my heart for days afterward until I had to buy the CD. That’s how it started for me. I love how country songs paint vivid pictures and that each one is its own story. You asked for some songs so please review/react to All These Years by Sawyer Brown, Not That Different by Collin Raye, Till I Was A Daddy Too by Tracy Lawrence, I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore by Bryan White, You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins, If I Had Any Pride At All by John Berry, When She Wakes Up (And Finds Me Gone) by Tim McGraw, Matches by Sammy Kershaw, I’m Not Strong Enough To Say No by Blackhawk, and I Still Believe In You by Vince Gill. That, my friend, would give you a nice look at how great country music was, especially in the 90s (the best decade for this genre). Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you.
This is 2 months after you posted this video but I love country music it's everything people have told you and more especially with this song. It can up lift you but it also pulls at the heart strings as well.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I used to have a friend whose father was abusive and every time I hear it I think of her, even though we haven't talked in many years.
Check up on them just a simply hey how are you, as a veteran I have stopped 2 friends from S. A little conversation can have a profound impact on someone's life
@@aviator2252 we had a disagreement six years ago and she blocked me. I don't know any of her information anymore. I miss her a lot but I doubt she would be interested in being friends again.
If you want a good Country song, that tells a story but isn't sad, I'd recommend Ol' Red by Blake Shelton. There will be a lot of recommendations that will try to make you cry though, as there are far too many of them. Also, Private Malone by David Ball is a good story song too.
Awwww, the fact that you said "do I find the country voice cheesy..." That my friend is our sweet Southern dialect. You will be happy to know it is gradually disappearing from all the bigger Southern cities but you will still find it in the rural areas.
This song....
Hits hard... hits home

@davidschmidbauer3930 I truly am sorry for the trauma you endured. Sending warm regards from Kentucky sweetie.
I have yet to see a reactor not cry watching this music video. I am very glad this video keeps resurfacing, because as a child like Alyssa, I had wished someone said something.
Country music keeps you humble. It’s real! It’s deep! It’s real life. I can never make it through this song without being a mess.
As the Bonus dad to a beautiful little girl, this song will tear your heart out.
I agree 100%
Good country songs for dads with daughters: I loved her first, Cleaning this gun, Butterfly Kisses, Stealing Cinderella. (All good for tearing fathers’ heartstrings)
I love butterfly kisses
As someone who was severely abused by my grandparents this song just hits different. People that abuse children should be ended in the most violent way possible. I cant imagine beating my kids, how can you do that to someone you love and are supposed to protect?
3 things that will send me from Zero to Jail time real fast is a man hurting a child or a dog or putting his hands on a woman. I just lose it. Good review as always Sebs. I know I am late to the party and I am slowly catching up with a lot of your reviews but God bless to you and your wife and kiddo. I am 47 yrs old former military former Country radio DJ and I truly feel like you are a good man and a great husband and an amazing example for a lot of other men out there.
it was based on a news story he wrote it was released in 2006 still makes me cry every time
I’m seeing him the 4th of July! For the second time in 12 years. He’s absolutely amazing in Concert.
Such an authentic reaction. It happens everytime I hear it. And we sing kinda like we talk here.
Watching your reaction was probably one of the hardest to watch. You saying what you had said, and I’m sitting here knowing what’s coming at the end. It kicks you in the heart for sure
Jason Carroll didn't want to write this song at first but it kept showing up on his desk.
This one & Cole Swindels “ You Should Be Here” are the 2 songs that get me dang near crying or crying everytime I hear them
I have heard this song many times. It never gets easier to listen to it. As a father of 3 girls, I cannot imagine ever laying a hand on any of them. This is another one of those songs that will bring a tear to your eye, no matter of age, race, economic situation or gender. All abuse needs to stop. Wish I had the answers.
Thank you for hanging through that song.
This needs to be heard.
Thank you for the amazing reaction. One of the most honest ones I've seen.
Alyssa lies, song is brutally touching. Tears every time. Abuse is not ok. 😢
if you want another heartbreaking country song Concrete Angel will break you down. Martina Mcbride has many songs that cover difficult subjects including child abuse.i had a hard time listening to these songs before but after i had my kids it was next to impossible. the world needs to do better by our children
Beautiful simply beautiful love it
When I saw your daughter with you on the video, I knew it was going to hit you HARD. I cry everytime I hear this song even though I have heard it a lot.
With his little girl in the room, no less... I have 2...I can't man. From one You-tuber to another, Bless you brother.
I'm a 47 year old truck driver with a 3 year old son, and I cry every time I hear this song. Good reaction man.
This song still makes me tear up
Well, that was unexpected. Heard this song many times before but my daughter just graduated kindergarten 2 days ago and it crushed me out of no where.
No matter how many times I hear this song it makes me bawl like a baby
This song makes me, a grown man, bawl every time.
Chris Stapleton's "Whiskey and You" in in my Top 5 favorite songs ever. Worth a shot, so to speak.
At the words "lies with Jesus" I literally break down EVERY TIME
Loving the reactions man. I'm a huge country fan. And love seeing new people find love in the music. Also love the raw reactions.
When I saw you had your daughter in the background, I knew this would be a hard one! 😢😢😢😢😢
I have several songs that are amazing! Love all the ones I’ve seen you do so far. Best 2 country songs ever are The Dance by Garth Brooks, and topping that is The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost by Craig Morgan, singing on the Kelly Clarkson show.
This is an amazing song. So sad but unfortunately so true.
I cry every single time I watch this or hear it.
Concrete Angel by Martina McBride and John Michael Montgomery The Little Girl....hard to watch but incredible stories
Nothing wrong with a grown man crying! It just shows you have a big heart! This song makes me cry too! #CountryMusic
This always makes me cry!
Your reaction videos are the best out there by far. Keep up the awesome job!
What a gorgeous little princess
Don't feel too bad man, doesn't matter how many times I've heard it, I still struggle to get through it
I don't understand how these artists can sing these songs without crying.
Country can be positive, but the most accurate description is real story telling, happy or sad
This is 2 months after you posted this video but I love country music it's everything people have told you and more especially with this song. It can up lift you but it also pulls at the heart strings as well.
Listened to this song multiple times and did a project on child abuse using this song and I still get emotional even after listening to this song
Songs that tell a story are called ballads
My 2 daughters are grown. I'm 51 and cry like a baby every time I hear this.
Awwww, the fact that you said "do I find the country voice cheesy..."
That my friend is our sweet Southern dialect. You will be happy to know it is gradually disappearing from all the bigger Southern cities but you will still find it in the rural areas.
This one makes me cry every time
Johnnys Dad was Taking Him Fishing When He Was 8 Years Old, Sad Country Song…
