It took me years to realize that this is not Harley's theme, but rather Batman's. You can hear this melody remixed in the final levels and in the ending as well. It's like an introduction for Batman's badassery that we, as players, must prove while the music is parading us.
I love looking back all these years later and seeing how many people love this game’s soundtrack. It was truly ahead of it’s time and only rivaled by other Genesis / Mega Drive games.

And this game came out in 95 not 88 But if you want some good techno going back to late 70s early 80s check out a band called kraftwerk. As far as music like this the closest genre i could think of would be hard acid trance.
This game is such a masterpiece! And I am saying this as someone who grew up in a country that has not seen the success of the Mega Drive called Genesis in northern America. So I did not know much about this system until I found it on the internet, so I did not know much about its capabilities. So it just blew my mind seeing this for the first time what such an old system from 1988 (probably means it was mainly designed by Sega in 1987) could actually do. Also, the way they added this awesome music into the game was just perfect.
Because this game was released in 1995 - the sunset of the 16-era game consoles. And because the game soundtrack was composed by Amiga/FM-synthesis legend - Jesper Kyd! One of those few Western composers who are masters of FM synthesis, to which I can include Chris Huelsbeck, Matt Furniss, Howard Drossin, Tommy Talarico of course.
You know it's kind of hard to the ears at certain times, that high pitched squeak? But I dare you to download the ROM, open the game, set the sound rate to 22050 instead of 44100. I shit you not, it sounds like the sounds of the night then I thought no, Gotham is a city. It shouldn't sound like a forest. Then it hit me - GOD THE HIGH PITCH SCRATCHES SOUND LIKE HUNDREDS OF BATS (in an echo-ish batcave?). Don't care if it's lack of sound technology, but I'll never listen to it the same again!!
It was the first time I saw a strange clown/harlequin-like person and tried to figure out who it could be. When he was banging his hands and feet on the floor so amusingly after defeating him, I immediately had the idea that it was a woman after all, not a man. It wasn't until some time later that I found out that it was indeed an adorable young girl and that her name was quite unmistakably Harley Quinn (just like "harlequin") - a crazy Joker fan, in love with the Joker even to the point of madness. Even later I saw her in the animated series, in the same red and black costume. Harley has become one of my all-time favourite female villain characters. I even bought myself the collector's deluxe hardcover edition of the "Mad Love" comic book at the 2018 Expo Comicon in a city of Krasnodar (RU) .
My friend got it when it came out and we played the shi out of it. It was almost impossible the beat but it was addictive to play. The music is superb! i still love the music
This boss... THIS BOSS... Jeez, when I first reached end of stage, thinking that the boss fight for first stage would be some sort of larger version of bandit with larger HP like in many games they do. But when this wierd tank-hot baloon thing has rolled out onto stage, I was like - "are you kidding me!?" This thing was a total bullet sponge -- took forever to destroy. But that wasn't it!! There was another 2 battles to fully destroy that thing. The boss..... for the first level.... Surprisingly once I finally beat this sucker - the later levels and bosses were not as hard until middle of the game!

I played this game ages ago, don't remember this crazy industrial track lol. The FM chip in Genesis is a thing to behold. I recommend checking out The Ooze game's genesis tracks (the stage music).
Very c64 sounding . And i like that . Since i was a kid the c64 music sound and megadrive sounds have stuck in my mind . As a user of synths for years i find c64 and megadrive to sound quite similar at times , both great in their own way
