    As a fellow Canadian, I feel that. I've had the same family doctor my whole life and really wanted to switch to a different one after a bad experience about 5 years ago, but haven't been able to find a replacement since there aren't any accepting new clients.

      It’s a bit of a perfect storm right now. With a pretty high amount of immigration into canada, and a profit cap on the amount of people a doctor sees(doctors in canada get paid on the amount of patients they have, to a limit. This was put in place to prevent competition between doctors), there’s currently a shortage of doctors, and no incentive for doctors to take new patients.

I’m apparently very lucky because we’ve had the same good family doctor for as long as I can remember, and honestly I’m starting to appreciate that a lot more after hearing about stuff like this happen.

    Same thing in Germany.
    If you are sick, you would have go to your "home / house doctor". Since I do not have one anymore, because my old one quit years ago, I literally have nowhere I'm "allowed" to go in case I got sick.
    They don't take any new people aswell, so the options are either: Hope to not get sick and if you do, be it either so that you survive without a doctor or its so bad that you are an emergency and go straight to the hospital.
    I had covid a few months ago, was in a miserable condition and still had to finish my Bachelor thesis during that since I had no way to get officially reported as sick.

      What is even a home doctor?

    • @Nigolasy
      @Nigolasy 2 місяці тому +3

      @@null-Oh-6666 Americans call them general practitioners. The doc you go to for everyday sicknesses.
      They are called home or house doctor because they used to actually come to your home if you were sick and couldn't go see someone. But that's a VERY long time ago - early 1900s. Now it's only very rare that a doc will come to your home, usually only for elderly people.

    • @Nigolasy
      @Nigolasy 2 місяці тому +5

      In germany, there is the ruleing that - if you are sick and need medicine or a note for sick leave - every general practitioner has to see you, even if you have to wait all day! If you walk in saying you are sick, you will get treated but need to wait for an open time slot. If they keep telling you: "We don't take new patients" you can also tell them that none in your area do and they should have to accept you - not 100% sure about the last one.
      Also you can call you health insurance saying that you can't find a general practitioner in your area that takes in new patients and they will find one for you or make them accept you.
      German health care system is overloaded but you have options.

    As a Canadian I havent had a family doctor for almost 16 years genuinely, and nobody in my city is looking for patients either. The doctor shortage is seriously an issue. The only reason i can get primary care currently is just because im not 25 yet so i can take advantage of the youth services in my province otherwise im fucked.

    So, universal healthcare's issues involve dr shortages and massive waittimes for any non-emergency care, and private healthcare's issues may be less on the wait times and shortages depending on locality but cost too much to get care anyway. Is there anywhere on the planet where healthcare is a _useable_ service that can actually sustain its local population? Crimany, humanity still hasn't figured out how to provide for their human rights.

    • @Valatyalie

      The private systems pay more because the public systems everywhere else don’t play fair. They force healthcare to be so cheap as to be unsustainable for the industry. The losses have to be recouped somewhere or they’ll just go out of business.

    In the US healthcare system, you can walk into a doctor's office and see them super quickly, but it will cost you a ton of money.
    In the Canadian healthcare system, you don't have to pay a ton of money to see a doctor, but it will take you forever to get into one.

      @lysanderxx1664 In the event of necessary urgent care, a person is rushed to the top of the line. The people that have to wait are the people that aren't in dire need. Hope that helps your understanding.

    • @Hariol_
      @Hariol_ 2 місяці тому

      @@lysanderxx1664 That's not how it works though, it's just how the USA has demonized our healthcare because... well because it's not how they do it I guess, I don't really see any other reason for it...
      Anything life threatening or heavily debilitating is priority, that's where the wait tends to come from. If someone gets shot, or you're having a stroke, or even a severe allergic reaction, you are seen immediately at the hospital. The guy with a broken leg might have to wait, and I waited 3 months to have my gallbladder removed, but that's just not that big of a deal compared to the sudden unalive I would experience if I did have debt like that. At that point in my life that is just not a joke (I'm better now).
      I recently seriously hurt my leg, I had 3 x-rays, an ambulance ride, was given morphine, and was given a high quality removable immobilizing brace. It only took about 2 hours total, and I paid $45 for the ambulance, that's it.
      And there is nothing stopping someone with an illness that might get pushed back from looking for treatment in other countries, medical tourism is a huge thing nowadays. Yes that can be expensive as well, but depending on the issue it may still be the better option.
      I promise it's not nearly as bad as it sounds for there to be a wait. Yes there are cases of life saving treatments being pushed back and people dying. But, while I do not actually know the statistics, I imagine that number is much lower than the amount of people with equally serious issues that are just afraid to get help in the USA.
      It's not a perfect system, none of them are. But I am thankful for the one I have, despite it's flaws.
      Edit: I want to add that in my personal experience it seems like the Canadians that do complain also tend to be the ones that have never had a serious life threatening issue before, usually it's a chronic but manageable problem. So they don't really see anything outside of the wait, which is understandable. I'm not trying to make those people out to be bad or anything. On the contrary, I'm happy they haven't had to experience that, and hope they never do.

The US Healthcare system is DEEPLY flawed, but I'm just saying that given my specific medical issues, needing to wait that long would be devastating. I might as well not be able to afford the healthcare at that point.
