Everyone making this a Vikings management issue but it also depends on what Darnold wants. Does he want the quick bag but loads of uncertainty or does he appreciate being in an environment where he can succeed. This is the first time in his career that he is playing to his potential, the question is if he is Kirko-Money (then let him go) or if he is willing to slightly compromise (we should keep). In any case, we are in a comfortable position here. The good problems to have.
Here’s the way I look at it, unless we look like LEGIT Super Bowl contenders in the playoffs there’s no reason to resign Darnold. If we can’t win with Darnold making 10 mil how tf are we supposed to win when we’re paying him 45? It’s as simple as that.
Unless JJ has a setback in his recovery, the Vikings should NOT resign Darnold. I don't think there's a huge gap in play between Darnold & McCarthy. So give JJ QB1 in '25 and use the cap space to truly build this roster out for the long haul
The only way you resign darnold is if they win the super bowl and he is clearly a highly contributing factor. Otherwise, you are repeating the same cycle this team always goes through but worse as you have a potential higher ceiling player on th we bench and waste the best advantage in sports
I think the 9rs are going to want Darnold back. If you watched the Rams 49rs game - Shannahan and Purdy were trying to hit the deep one on ones over and over again. 98% of the time the WR had separation but Purdy under threw him. Then he way overthrew him and it ended up as an INT. They were trying to prove Purdy was the right choice over Darnold but Purdy does not have that deep accuracy. If 9rs can bring Darnold back, I don’t think they pick up Purdy’s 5th year option
purdy is smart QB, quick decision-making. But yeah, a late rounder doesn't have physical talent as the #3 draft pick. But the 9ers SB window is cloded, with older players, injured and over paid contracts
I would love the chance to let JJ sit one more year while he’s actually healthy and can take practicereps… Whether that means Sam Donald agrees to come back on a one year deal or we have Danny dimes back for super cheap on a one year deal, either way works for me!
I think how many wins in the playoffs will determine if he stays. The top-tier quarterback goes deep into the playoff-like Mahomes. Many QBs can get to the playoffs with a good team. If he takes you to the SB, you have to sign him. JJ can sit and develop an arm like Darnold, otherwise it is a Brady-style quick passing game and handoff next year. Or daniel jone running game.
JJ all the way. There’s a good chance Darnold wouldn’t be anywhere near this good anywhere else. If JJ is the one KOC wants most, I’d expect the team would be even better with him and we would have the ability to make the team as a whole even better.
If Donald brings the Vikings deep into the playoffs and assuming his chemistry with KC and the team remains good, the priority should be to keep Donald regardless
@ jj has proved very little idk why everyone’s putting all our marbles in him cuz we drafted him high. How many first round qbs did teams see a future in that turned out to be busts. Sam has proved it depending on how he is in playoffs.
If Darnold leaves, he better cash in. There's no other team with the same infrastructure and coaching that the Vikings have. I'm okay if he ends up in the same situation as Kurt Cousins. Huge payout and mediocre performance.
With JJ coming off injury and having a 1 good preseason game sample size. Sign Sam for 3 year 120M with 75M guaranteed. 3rd year is optional. Give JJ a real 1-2 years on the bench and getting hungry.
Give Darnold a 2 year 80M with 60M guaranteed. Let Darnold Start next season and let McCarthy get reps if there is a blowout or a later game in the season and start McCarthy the second season with Darnold as a backup.
Sam already had an elite QB mechanic skill set, the O'Connell offense is a lush environment for Sam to achieve. McCarthy will require a few years to get anywhere close if ever.
@@pvrpleheffJJ's Michigan year was very solid and was improving in preseason, but he's really unproven on the NFL level still. Sam is making technically difficult throws requiring complicated footwork mechanics most NFL starters can't do in practice, and Sam is pulling them off under sudden pressure and in late fourth quarter drives consistently.

I trust KOC to develop JJ. I'm thankful for what Sam has done and he deserves to go get his money.

That's a sweet looking blade. Thanks for the post. Take care.
Gotta prove it in the playoffs. If he folds under the pressure in a wild card or divisional round if we get the 1 seed…question answered
Go Vikings (& Bills, Steelers & Seahawks)! Skol!
You've got Mccarthy waiting in the wings . 1 yr deal or a tag and trade.
I 100 percent agree this could be a one year wonder type deal like Daniel Jones

Addendum, if something goes wrong with mccarthys progression related to his injury.

The golden gate Bridge is spot on! Got him from the 49ers ,the red hair and a wonder of the world.

Can we just finish the season first? Pls
If conference championship appearance or more: Tag and Jordan Love JJ.
If divisional round appearance: Let him walk, tag, or tag and trade.

All comes down to KOC and his view on JJMC. Salary cap management is secondary.
If Sam wins the Superbowl, obviously keep him. Now if Sam takes us to a divisional appearance. It's going to be hard to decide what's going to happen.
Lions and bills halftime show?
Goff was over the line on TD at 14-7
I’m a Vikings fan but you have to give credit to the chiefs and what they did with Mahomes contract lol.
Sign him and see where he takes us. When JJ appears ready then w can get a high trade value and have Jones back up JJ.
Ryan Fitzpatrick "fitz magic" was a dif jet. .Play offs showed the weakness Sammy does not show. Case had wins buut not the play off amr Sams got.
