Tri Rail provides decent frequent service to Southeast Florida, very practical and cost effective. You see a lot of flight crew, pilots and attendants riding it if they live in Palm Beach County and need to fly out of Ft Lauderdale or Miami International. Saves on gas, parking and stress.
I’m really impressed. The livery is charming and the interior is just fine. My experience of Florida is of endless multi lane freeways and stroads so it is great to see that rail travel is really expanding. Also impressive is that the train had a lot of passengers, including people with bikes, so that bodes well for the future. I’m definitely going to find a way to take the train, either this system or Brightline, the next time I’m there.
My first impression from this video was also "wow, so many passengers!". Every video I've watched about commuter rail in the US always gives the depressing image of desolate platforms where empty ghost trains stop without a purpose. It's so relieving to find a city with a successful commuter railway in the US!
Miami's metro is easier than others since it's narrow and long, designers can get away with a few lines connecting all major areas, However most metros in US are sprawled and have aggregious dead zones for transit, Which will make it much more difficult compared to the Miami West Palm Beach corridor.
In la they couldn't even afford to replace all their old cars so they replaced the outside cars with the newer safer ones and called it a day. They are also not even the same colors. And in 2018 we had 4 different loco models with 3 different liveries
I remember I took the Amtrak Silver Star down to Fort Lauderdale and back up a week later, as I was waiting for the train I encountered tons of Tri-Rail trains then. It was very cool to see.
this reminds me of my days living in South Florida, having to take the Tri Rail sometimes between Broward and Palm Beach counties, when I didnt feel like driving.
I remember the Tri Rail from back when I grew up in South Florida. When I was in 4th grade, my class and I went on a field trip and we took the Tri-Rail train to West Palm Beach to go to the Whitehall Flagler museum, have lunch at Chuck E. Cheese’s and go to the Dreher Park Zoo (now the Palm Beach Zoo). Pretty fun! I liked riding on the Tri-Rail.
I used this line a few times, but took the Metrorail, which it connects to for work a few times a week. I caught this train from the Airport to West Palm Beach. As for the engine, it looks like a Bat-Train hiding behind that livery! 😉 BTW, I was at that Amtrak Station for my trip from Miami to Winter haven, Florida almost a month ago! I agree with them sharing the Brightline Station they will definitely get more passengers! Now hoping for that Brightline extension to Lakeland & Tampa in a few years.
When I visited Miami I took Brightline up to west palm beach, walked over to the Tri-rail station and took that service back to Miami. I wanted to experience both as a visiting railfan. Brightline price was like 8x as much but was much nicer and significantly faster. Brightline is fantastic service, but tri-rail is fantastic value. I'm glad both services exist, there is definitely a market for both. I just wish Amtrak Miami station was integrated with either service.
Brightline seems to be focused on the longer distance traveller with their Orlando section and future westward and northward expansions. I think tying both networks together strengthens both services, especially if you can get a single booking trip including connections.
When my late parents lived in Boynton Beach, I occasionally took Tri-Rail to visit Miami, getting off at the transfer station and taking the Metro downtown. At the time Tri-Rail was using F40PH locomotives and the Bombardier Bi-Level coaches. I found the service to be clean and efficient. A direct connection to downtown Miami would be an improvement.
3.75 Isnt expensive for a 22 min ride, especially when tolls are more, gas is expensive, and youre getting on a legit train, not a subway or streetcar.
Unless they recently did away with it there should still be one or two F40’s in service with the original green and orange livery, which I’m biased towards since I’m a UM fan lol. But yeah the Tri-Rail has always been a busy and very important service down here since there’s a ton of people who live in one county and work in one of the other two.
Tri-Rail has always been busy since it began in the early 90’s. It’s popular with people who live in one of the three counties but work in one of the others, and there’s tons of people down here who do.
This looks like an extremely successful well-planned commuter service. I'm familiar with the east coast of Florida and I would think there would be a lot of utility extending the service further north because it's a long string of towns and suburbs which probably could use the service going to and from Miami.
I didn't realize that Tri-Rail purchased the Hyundai Rotem cars. I rode Tri-Rail back in 2007 when I was speaking at Railvolution and will be back there in Oct/Nov for this year's Railvolution so I will have to try them out along with Brightline. However, the last I heard is that the extension to the Government Center station is been put on indefinite hold because the aerial structure approaching the station was not designed to handle the heavier Tri-Rail equipment.
I’ve ridden it a couple of times years ago. I’m glad they are linking things together - that connectivity has always been an issue, and it should make it even more popular.
I remember going onto Tri-Rail during my second visit to Florida in 2019. I've never encountered any Hyundai Rotem coaches and were mostly on Bombardier Bi-Level coaches, which again is a first for me, a Long Islander. I was on two trainsets going from West Palm Beach to Miami Airport and back each powered by an M-K F40PHL-2 (going south) and the featured Brookville BL36PH (going north) locomotives.
I don't know if this is really true or not, but I get the feeling public mass transit is slowly but surely returning to the US. Maybe it's somewhat austere at the moment, and probably won't be the envy of the world any time soon, but any progress makes me happy.
I didn't know about Tri-Rail's inception story, sounds like Shore Line East here in Connecticut. I also like the livery, I wish trains in the US were more colorful and not just stainless steel. Nice that there are shuttles to the airports! Also was there no soap in the bathroom?!
I caught the tri rail about 5 years ago from hollywodd to the Tri rail/metro transfer station (where i continued on the metro to miami) and back again. Sadly on the way there someone had been hit by a train so the train was replaced by a bus to Coral Gables.... but I had to wait well over an hour for the bus to come. I was visiting my sister who was living at Pembroke pines at the time (I'm Australian) and I am vision impaired so i have to catch public transport and I found the public transport in South East Florida to be weird. Miami dade appears to have a great metro system but Broward county's bus routes seem to go straight west-East/East West with only very limited services going from pembroke pines to miami in the "peak times" to get people to/from work and the buses seemed to be slow. Its as if Broward and Miami Dade Counties don't speak to each other in regards to public transport. There's so much open spaces around the roads in broward Counnty. I feel that Broward county could invest in some Light rail lines to convey passengers to the Tri Rail and then find a way to get the tri rail to run right into Miami. My 2 cents worth on south east Florida Public transport. lol EDIT: Just finished watching the video. Its great to see that tri rail will be going through to the Brightline Terminal!
I’m kinda surprised that while it primarily parallels the FEC route, its over CSX tracks. I’m hyped up that in its future, the Tri Rail line is expanding/connecting up with Brightline’s FEC trackage.
I think it looks fine for a commuter train, it appears clean. The engine isn’t that ugly kinda of modern if it’s made by Hyundai like the. Impaneled that makes the cars they were going for a “fluid” look or design a few yrs back maybe that’s why it looks like it does?? Really it’s not that ugly. Thanks for the review
2:50 I think SunRail has a more ugly locomotive. the MP32PH-Q has the cab of an MP36 on the body of a GP40WH-2 4:45 I've seen that railcar in Kansas City when it was being shipped out to Florida! I remember someone told us this car was a diesel railcar and not just a coach. It's a shame they aren't using these six cars. If Denver's A-line began construction three years earlier, they probably would've used Colorado Railcar equipment
With tourism and non-natives who retire there, South Florida has changed so much that it's barely recognizable each time I go home. I truly miss the old days which included riding Tri-Rail with my dad and brother from WPB to FLL to MIA and then back home. It was way less crowded and such a fun day trip for sure! #iMissMyFlorida
No way you're going to drive from Downtown Miami to Hollywood Florida in 22 minutes unless it's at 2:00am. At best during the mid-day on a weekday you're looking at about 30 minutes. If during rush hour your talking 1 hour.
Did you see the train yard near the Airport? Tri-Rail actually still has on their property some very unique double-decker DMU from Colorado Railcar. These were trialed, but apparently were not successful.
The ugliest engine in North America at this time? What about compared to the P42DC? Don't get me wrong, I love the P42s. But, I have to admit they're not the best lookers out there. The ALC-42 looks way better. It doesn't sound better than the P42s, but it looks better.
I think trirail is a pretty good service as it stands, but to modernize they may need to do what Caltrain does and electrify Miami airport to FLL when feasible.
American transit is such a joke. "Oh we will just run this train as a stopgap measure while we build this highway, then cancel so everyone can get back in their cars asap!" Thank God there was some sense talked into the decision makers back then
I’m surprised by how solid this somewhat small commuter service is, however, it is absolutely appalling that it is not electrified. US railroads will never learn! 😤
I am sick to death of "toilets time." It's always the same -- everything is wonderful. For those times it's not, THEN talk about the bloody toilet. Otherwise, give us a rest.
Maybe this is just me, but I actually quite like the look of the Locomotive.
Brookville Locomotive BL36PH.
oh yea like i know a trains main purpose is point a to point b but that does not mean we can't ride in style
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 Search "Nankai 50000 series". Most stylish imo.
It kinda just looks like a knock off F59-PHI but I think it’s cool
@@tehangrybird345 looks like a mp36ph

I don’t know much about Florida and I didn’t know this line had been operating for so long. Impressive!
@@ozgirl45As a Floridian, I’ve used it many times. It’s goaded in some areas. I just wish they would change the paint (which they’re finally doing).
Every metro area in the U.S should have a similar service
You write the first check, and see who follows along.

They recently remodeled the F40s so they are being used again. They also got rewrapped to match Tri Rail livery.
They are doing testing and officially opening downtown Miami this fall

Yes

looks to be a pretty full train, especially in florida where planning favors cars and sprawl

I remember using the trirail to get travel around when I used to live in soflo. I always thought it was good service not the best but certainly good
Simply and clear video on confy way to travel.
Great trip. 5 stars for the livery, 1 star for the cab car and the engine visual. I think it should be Hyundai Rotem, not Hunday Rotem.
Pretty sure it IS Hyundai Rotem
Tri-Rail in South Florida. Must be a popular railway line that serves the North Miami areas. And the weather is calm.

One thing to consider is gas back in 1989 was less than a buck a gallon. The mindset was different back then because of that fact alone.
