      I saw this page, but I'm a little confused because there's another version of this puzzle which consists of two hemispheres, which you have to turn around to make a sphere. I don't know which one came first!

      It would be available online, and we would work to get it in stores. Because we're self publishing, we'll have to convince stores to stock the book! We'll definitely offer it online, though!

    A lot of disentanglement-style puzzles seem magical. Even when you know the solution, it can be really hard to wrap your mind around what exactly is going on. I love your soothing style and clever thought processes.

      Thank you! I agree that disentanglement puzzles feel like that a lot of the time. I wonder why?

      Excluding things at the molecular level, I struggle to think of anything that forms loops in nature. And certainly loops which wrap back on themselves or are interlinked.
      Maybe this is why; our brains have simply not evolved to cope with this type of problem because it not needed?
      Another great puzzle and brilliant video. Many thanks for posting!

    • @FLEBpuzzles

      One way to think about it is that there's a chain part above and below the nut. You're swapping which one is on the which side of the washer.
      I agree though, that it's hard to visualize!
      I hope we meet our funding goal on Kickstarter next week!

  • @n8r8rutube
    @n8r8rutube 7 років тому

    I had to rewatch the part at 2:14 like 10 times but now I think I get it. Lets say the long way of the string is the x axis with +x going to the right, the y axis is perpendicular to the x axis and on the plane of the table, with +y going away from the camera, and the z axis is normal to the table. The center of the paper ring will be the origin. This essentially makes the constraint that the x coordinate of both arrows must always be positive.
    In the initial state, the only portion of the string where the arrows can meet lays in negative x. But rotating the string 180 degrees around the y axis brings that section of string to positive x. This rotation would also cause the arrows to enter negative x; however, rotating the string in an arc (ie around the circumference of a circle in the xz-plane), allows a segment of string to be in positive x at every step in the rotation. So during this rotation, you can also move the arrows along the string so that they always remain in positive x.
    It's kind of hard to explain in words, but visualizing the move as a rotation around the y axis really helps to understand what is happening with the string, as well as the chain in the actual puzzle.

  • @jbftcmof
    @jbftcmof 7 років тому +7

    That puzzle is very unintuitive!
    I think the fact it's made of chain instead of string makes it more complicated to our visual brain. There's no nice curves making us picture loops and circles in our head etc.
    The string example was super helpful. Do you ever do stuff like that to help you figure puzzles out, or is it just for the videos?

    I'd love to see you do the hanayama cast enigma puzzle. You have to move the first piece in weird ways to get it off, then you have to do something that I struggled with to get the other two pieces off. It's fun but difficult.

  • @jumiduss
    @jumiduss 7 років тому

    Hey FLEB, I had a question about the kickstarter.
    Will the puzzles be very difficult (imo fun) like the the m.i.t mystery hunt where it's something very complex/ intuitive, or something more standard like the typical one page logic puzzles that float around the internet. a.k.a general audience or hardcore puzzler
    Not saying that's a bad thing either way!
    Appreciate your work and look forward to supporting it!

    • @FLEBpuzzles
      @FLEBpuzzles  7 років тому

      They're going to be in the puzzlehunt style, which is what the MIT Mystery Hunt is. Each section is themed after a different category of puzzle (word puzzle, grid puzzle, etc.). It's probably closer to BAPHL or DASH difficulty than the MIT Mystery Hunt, but there's going to be a wide range of difficulty, especially as you get further into the book!
      One of the big differences between something like this and a typical puzzlehunt is that I really don't want internet access to be required to solve the puzzles.
      The whole first chapter is going to be available for free, with hints on the page, once the campaign launches, so you'll be able to try it out for yourself!

      Similar, but not the same! The Eureka, Loop de Loop (the Japanese puzzle), and the Nut and Bolt puzzle all have different mechanics to accomplish "impossible" tasks! That Japanese video is great, but it's more about pushing knots around the puzzle, rather than switching positions of loop segments!

      If you don't understand it, that's a failure on my part. I'm sorry about that!
      This puzzle is very unintuitive, though! The best way to think about it it that the nut and bolt have chain segments on both sides. The moves that you make switch them. The particular way that the chain is tied around the ring is what allows you to do that.

      KML: the hubris is real
      I despise people like you
      As for fleb's comment, that's a really nice way think about it, it makes sense. My initial thought when seeing the puzzle was "would it be possible if you only had to flip one?" Which, I guessed, was not. And it isn't ;)

    • @kmlkmljkl
      @kmlkmljkl 7 років тому +2

      hubris??? I was talking about the comments like "first", " sixth", "can i get likes for my birthday"
      how does hating useless comments like that make me a bad person?

    • @BigDBrian
      @BigDBrian 7 років тому +2

      Because you divide people into categories like morons and would wish & expect they "stay away".
      Sure, there's some attention seeking people. Most comments I see are just jokes. And yes, there's a "Can I get 16 likes for my birthday?" (which I had downvoted btw) but that's simple attention seeking, that doesn't mean he's a moron.
      And hubris, because you feel like you're better than others and exclaim it.
