  • The 1968 - 1979 VW Type 22 van continued the Microbus legacy. This 1971 model features several improvements made regarding brakes, lighting and engine performance. Learn why 1968 - 1970 wheels don’t fit 1971 - 1979 models and how this particular example once made a great family camper.

Never was into the bay window type 2's. I'm still amazed at the prices they get for the early window vans. Back when I was in high school in 1971 you could pick up a non running window van for $50 and throw in a engine from a beetle and have a decent van. We would find a bug with a good body pan and engine but with a beat up body and take the engine and after stripping the body off sell the pan to someone building a dune body and end up with absolutely no money in the van except for the cassette player and speakers. Always stripped the rear seats out and went with shag carpeting and a mattress. Instant opportunity vehicle.

My best friend had a VW camper van similar to this. It was all original. Down to the hammocks, sink, table and all. It was horribly slow. But still fun to cruise around town in

old VWs have skyrocketed in price across the board!

The low front turn signals continued through the 1972 model year. '72s are instantly recognizable for their combination of the early nose with the late rear with larger intake vents and tri-color taillights.

I believe that piece you think is the roof is the cot, this bus had a fiberglass roof that hinged open from the windshield end. "newer" buses 72-79 opened from the rear of the bus. Depending on the year there would have also been a fiberglass luggage carrier on the roof as well.

My father worked on a 77 camper van for the Phish concert in 04 for a local customer. That camper bus definitely lived a wonderful life and I wish I could hear the stories those remaining sheet metal panels could tell about that campers history.

40 years ago a friend's girlfriend had a camper, on a beautiful spring day 12 of us climbed in and went to the Flatbrook in Sussex county NJ. Parking next to a small mountain stream we climbed out and drank heartily from the cold stream. Hiking up to the 3 waterfalls a half mile in we encountered a dead deer laying in the stream. I've had deer but for the first time it was liquid deer.
