    Hello there,
here are some tips from Bulgaria.
When you breed chicken for eggs you could give them sand mixed with the food. The sand will make the egg-shell harder and more resistant to brake. When you eat the eggs do not trow the shells. Give them back to the chicken to eat. This way the calcium from the shells will go back to them. Again - the shells of the eggs after this will be stronger and harder.
When you cook your squirrel by frying and eat the meat - do not trow the bones. Make a soup.

gotta add some onions carmalized and garlic, knock your socks off good. I like how you rough it.
Great grandma, started life desperately poor, would insist that the grandsons never shoot the squirrel in the head, only behind the shoulder as she loved to eat the brains out of the skull. Through hard work, some luck and more hard work, she and her husband became incredibly wealthy in the shipping business(real american dream stuff there). They bought a 22,000 acre ranch north of Kerville Tx, incredible game, hunting and fishing. She'd take the grandsons out in the morning, they'd shoot a turkey, or a big buck. Drive back to the camp house in a old model t used as a ranch truck(they'd go anywhere). Have the deer processed, go back out that afternoon and go bass fishing - one hell of a tough god fearing lady, who despite her great wealth, always insisted that those squirrel brains never went to waste, she also liked fancy hats which made for some damn interesting photos of her with a big buck laid across the front of a vehicle with her holding a rifle while wearing some big hat with feathers on it. too funny :/
I've been wanting to do a combination, yurt and shipping container home off grid. I enjoy your program dave thanks.

Dave, Great Series! In a video recently you mentioned something about balancing the temp flucuations in the yurt. I'm a contractor and have used foil buble insulation in my trucks in the winter. It looks like foil faced bubble wrap and is sold in 48" wide rolls at home stores. It would be as reflective as space blankets but more insulative and also light weight. You could cut long pie shaped sections and hang or sew them to your rafters with needle and bank line thread. Warm and lightweight.

I simmer mine for at least 3 hours. I've eaten hundreds of squirrel in my life but have been without for many years. Till my neighbor shot some for me. It really smelled good on that long slow simmer with a little salt and pepper... it tasted awesome. Dave, I just can't get enough of your videos. As busy as you are, I just appreciate that you still take the time to make and post so many. Thanks!

Dave, thank you for your body of knowledge you have shared through your many, many videos. I have enjoyed them from the start. I have watched you for many years, since you started looking at the new property and have always gathered one thing or an other from each and every video...even if it was small. Thank you for all you do and even before you ever stepped foot on dual survivor, you already were way above what thy could have on the show. I am not looking for a response, you should already know, in your heart what to do...do more with WAY LESS....and live like a King with a English accent. Long Live Dave Ranglar! Ref: Vikings
    Amazon Prime...WATCH AT LEAST 5.

If you want a more intense flavor on the squirrel and in the gravy, you can season the leg with the season salt and then season the breading mixture on the other side of the pot before you bread the leg. When you bread the leg, it will stay breaded a bit better with only one wet coating and one dry coating. Great video; this is a pretty good little series, I'm watching them all front to back. :-)

Great video as usual, Dave. Another enhancement you might want to try is adding a little salt and black pepper to the flour before you dredge your meat in it. It'll give your breading a bit of extra flavor, and you might already have both of those on hand.

In a survival situation especialy when it's cold, eating right before going to bed is a good idea. Your body has to work to digest and metabolize the food. This releases energy and maintains your core temprature.

  • @Ready2Run1

on the previous video in this series someone made the comment that it might be good to pt a rock in the bottom of the stove to radiate heat over a longer period-this would act as a heat sink and mimic keep the yurt warmer over night-if it doesn't interfere with the cooking to much, it works much better on the top of the stove. an old mechanic friend of mine would keep his shop warm with a wood stove with brake drums and rotors stack two feet high on top as a heat sink- actually worked quite well

Yum. My mom used to cook the squirrels and rabbits that my dad and I shot. She made it cacciatore, absolutely awesome. This is usually a chicken dish (hunter's chicken). It makes the meat so tender that it falls off the bone.
    I love this series.

  • @cahoonu
    @cahoonu 13 років тому

Looks very nice. I find, with rabbits, and I expect that squirrel would be the same, if you bone it out and then crumb it, its not so stringy, because you have separated the sinews from the bone. It seems more tender as well, and you don't get so much sinew stuck between your teeth.
It also allows me to use my knife and gain some extra knife skills.
I look forward to your next video. Thanks.

Got a cool tip for opening eggs, hit the egg down on a flat surface. It will break in half easier and there will be less chance of getting shells into the food.
I use the same brand of lard, could it be used to keep tools from rusting as well?

Just a little variation. When I'm frying my squirrel like you did here, I cut the meat from the bone. That way it cooks more evenly and I like to just chomp (lol)...Nice to see the squirrel gravy recipe. Could you make the gravy using a primitive flour such as dried clover or acorn flour? also, you may get some messages about the lard. My Mom's grandma told me (as she patted my hand); "It's too long to be 100 yrs. old." She died later that year and she ate lard all the time. Pray on Bro, love it

i have found out through many years of eating wild game. If you debone the meat and small cube it. before you put it in the brine you can take it out of the brine and cook it with the gravy . less dishes and tenderizes the meat also add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar will help tenderize the meat . i have also added burdock root almost like potatos and never add the pepper or salt cooking peace of meat it will draw the water out of anything almost like eating shoe leather

Tomorrow try some squirrel stew. Boil the squirrel for an hour, drop in some flour dumplings with some baking powder mixed in. When they float, its done. the meat should be more tender and the grease floats up and gets in the dumpling. If you have any veggies, they can be added to the stew.

dave i was wondering how your stove pipe set up is out of the top of the yurt and why rain can get in an hit your stove. yurts i have been in have a plexi glass type cone to cover the hole in the top that allows light in and keeps the weather out. the stoves have been off center with a stove pipe hole through the canvas similar to a wall tent stove set up. i was wondering why you chose the set up you chose. yurts are awsome for winter and the stoves make it really nice.

That's wasn't squrriel gravy, it would have to been made with "leftover" lard in the pan from cooking the squrriel to be squrriel gravy.
