Im not concerned about having a standard volume or clear quality audio throughout a production. What Im looking for is a more rigorous way to standardize my volume across multiple productions, so that anyone listening to my casts back to back in a playlist wont have to adjust volume constantly. There is nothing I hate more than listening to other podcasters playlists and have to crank up the volume just to hear them, then have my ears blown out in the next.

Thank you for the great content- do you have a list of what "effect" to do first while editing, or does it not matter? Normalize- compress- fade in and out- voice over- graphic EQ- filter curve- ect.
Very good man..Only thing if you upload your video to YT after normalizing at the above method they will reduce the volume of the recording to their standard normalization setting. This can be checked by right clicking on the video "stats for nerds"..I notice that Audacity has now a new Loudness Normalization (L.U.F.S) setting for this purpose.
Should we normalize or loudness normalize or both? I understand LUFS but I notice you didn't mention that here. I would skip all of this and just use Auphonic but you mentioned in another video that doesn't work well with fades etc so I'm going the manual route with Audacity.
I just subscribed to your incredible channel! Should you use 'normalise' before or after other adjustments like hard limiter and compression? Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words and appreciation! Regarding your question on how to normalize multiple mp3 files, try this method: Import your MP3 files and select all tracks by clicking on 'Edit', then 'Select', and finally 'All'. Next, head to 'Effect' and choose 'Normalize'. From the settings box that appears (defaulting to -1 dB), adjust the maximum amplitude. Click 'OK' to start normalizing. Remember, normalization ensures consistent volume levels across all files. Happy editing!
@@Buzzsprout Thanks for the prompt reply. I was able to select all files and Normalize which I should have mentioned in my post. However, I do not know how to export the normalized files as separate files. I believe once you export, all individual files get consolidated into a single file. Appreciate your instructions.
Ah.. Try this then. After normalizing your tracks in Audacity, use the ‘Export Multiple’ feature to export each track as a separate file. After which, go to ‘File’ > ‘Export’ > 'Export Multiple'. In the dialog box that appears, choose the destination for saving the exported files, then click 'Export’. This will export each track as a separate file. I hope that helps!

Ok dumb question here. I'll start off with a song with peaks on both the left and right channels. When I normalize and put DC offset on, one of the audio channels almost always is just a teeny bit more quiet than the other one. I know you partially explained it, and I partially understand it's because of DC, but why are both channels not peaking?
Hi Daniel, Audio normalization is the process of adjusting the level or volume of your audio files without affecting their dynamic range (the relationship between the louder and softer points of the track.) While Compression reduces the dynamic range in your audio files so the overall volume level is even throughout the episode. Without compression, your listeners might hear a blaring loud intro followed by an interview so quiet they have to adjust their volume to hear it.
Thanks a lot it was easy to follow and very useful I totally missed that -1dB part for whatever reason it was 0 when I checked I might of changed when I just started using and didn't had a clue completely how to use it.
I have recorded a vocal for a song that needs to be normalized. It has no EQ on it all all. Should i mix the track first before i normalize, or normalize and then mix?
I have a question. So I'm digitising a few cassette tapes with music, and I've noticed that the right channel is slightly louder than the left one, usually by up to 2dB. What setting should I use if I wanted to balance out the two channels?
*Question:* I thank you very much for the help and explanation, but what if I would like to use Normalise WITH Noise Reduction...can I, or should I, do that? Me; myself, I use Noise red. + Normalize + compression. And to me, it sounds great...but...I'm still unsure if this is the way to go. ?:(

Hey there! That depends on the audio quality you have recorded. Our tip on when is the best time to normalize audio is: One # You want to match the level of your audio (music and vocal) Two # You may want to make the original file louder 🔗 www.buzzsprout.com/blog/how-to-normalize-audio-in-audacity
Is this the same as equalizing? I've been told a good basic post production technique for my first podcast is EQ, Compress, DE-ESS, Remove noise, does that sound right?
So I'm having an issue where one of my players in DnD is WAAAAAAAAY louder than anyone else, when I normalize he becomes the only thing I hear in the audio, everyone else is silenced by the adjustments, is there a way to keep the lower volumes where they are?
Hey Rexxy! Try to manually reduce their volume so that it’s more in line with the rest of the group. Once you’ve balanced each speaker, then apply normalization across the entire file. This keeps everyone at a more even volume without letting one person overpower the others. Audacity can help you do this, and by using the “normalize” function, you can still bring the audio to the desired peak level without losing the dynamic range. Hope that helps! so if you are not working in stereo but importing two different voice tracks, sound effects and a little music, do you normalize each before import, or before mixing or all at once at the end with select all?
Hey there! Great question. When working with multiple tracks in Audacity, it's best to normalize each track separately before mixing them. This ensures each element has the correct volume level and helps achieve a harmonious mix. After normalizing, tweak levels as necessary while mixing. Double-check overall audio levels when finished.
