My Millennium app allows me to request a queue number before getting to the bank. I have not tested it yet to see how well it works. The most irritating thing for me are the monthly charges on an account usually around €6+ or €8+ depending upon how your account is set up.
I'm not sure there is a bank here in Portugal where you can escape the monthly fees. We have not scheduled an appointment using the app, but I would imagine that will become the standard in a year or two.
Banks in Portugal are trying to avoid personal transactions but reducing staff, forcing more people to use ATM's, online, causing major wait times.
As a foreigner I couldn't open a bank account without a SEF#, I wanted to buy property. But it would seem it was for the best.
The NIF number is one of the main requirements to get an account opened here.

You can also give a lawyer power of attorney to set up the bank account on your behalf, if time and convenience is at a premium.
