  • I get a lot of questions about how to make beautiful work on text, handwritten, and print papers as well as maps and eco prints: how to use them as a “blank” page in your journal and mixed media work. Well, here are five ideas using soft pastels, collage, acrylic paint, stencils, pencil, and watercolour.
To see boiled blank books in my online shop, go here:

So glad I found you. I'm participating in a few challenges this year and using art as a part of my self-care. I came across your idea of a "burner journal." I'm excited to write down my wildest dreams!

Hello and welcome, Jenny. In teaching journal and diary arts I am constantly having to help people get past their own inner critic and having dodged her, get meaningful stuff that can help us to transform on the page. Thanks for touching base and yes, go try that burner journal. You have nothing to lose but a couple of bucks and some ink. Keep me posted on how it goes! Kelly

Hi Pauline, I put all the pages together, added onion skins throughout and some rusty things, then tie them all together into a bundle. Then immerse in a rusty cast iron stock pot full of black tea. Simmer for a few hours. Then dry, but only after having dripped wet, rusty tea everywhere in your small flat. Hey presto, boiled book! (Thank you for the suggestion. I really, really want feedback and to know what people are curious about seeing. And hey, I am going to France in two weeks, so yippee!)

@@BookandPaperArts Hello Again! I had great success with the 3 pieces I worked on. I used oil pastels and a book page to make the pretty yellow flowers, and they look great. Then in 2 phases, I did the acrylic flowers and the water colored flowers. They both came out beautifully. I stayed pretty true to your instruction and I plan to do more, and perhaps do some from my own imagination based on your techniques. Thank you so much! I rewatched the videos you posted the links to, and loved them, and have watched a lot of your older ones, so lots more experimentation to come. I appreciate the encouragement!

@@annwaddell7321 Hi Ann. This is so exciting. Your flowers sound very cool and yes, you are quite right the next step is you make the style your own. This is what I do: learn a technique by copying the original artist, then start looking at flowers in books and real ones in the garden (and yeah, on Pinterest, too 😁) then try my version of them on cheapo paper until I get something that really pops. So, go get 'em!
