David Garrett said he learned Beethoven's Violin Concerto from Yehudi menuhin.
    And Yehudi Menuhin said.
David Garrett is the most outstanding violinist of this era.

Отличное исполнение! И отличное от других, это его посыл, нравится кому-то или нет! Настоящий музыкант НЕ должен копировать даже гениальное исполнение, мне очень нравится его интерпретация, сочная, "говорящая" - то, что надо!!! Умница!

I enjoyed this (watched the full concert!) more than any I have ever seen. David is at his best, here. The Carmen Suite (the final number) was exquisitely done, but wish David had played in it. Even so, I was spellbound through the entire concert. David is my favorite musician ever! Thanks for posting this "teaser" video! ~0:-)

True...Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern, Itzakh Perlmann, Ida Händel can't ALL be stupid.
But they were ALL Garrett's teachers. You expect them to say that their own student sucks?
You hear people criticizing actors/athletes/politicians/lawyers/etc all the time. Why is it such a big deal when a musician gets criticized? I'd say this performance is "quite good" for a typical professional violinist, but not nearly world class, not nearly up to Garrett's reputation/fame.

  • @AugustinHadelichViolin

no question it's a very difficult piece - but there are indeed violinists alive today who play it very well. Actually, most people in the violin section of this orchestra would probably play it better.

@operaticxingenue Five words: It's so easy to criticize. Actually 5 1/2 words,"it's" being a conjunction. My point is,I am sick to death of people criticizing this man.The fact that he's taking time now to have the fun he never had as a child does not alter the fact that this is one of the most important violin talents of our day. Yehudi Menuhin,Isaac Stern, Itzakh Perlmann, Ida Händel can't ALL be stupid. Hopefully he'll come back to the classical world one day.Till then, lighten up everybody!!

  • @DaigoParry

I've never heard Garrett play classical pieces until now. Wow... for someone who has such a pedigree of teachers, and the (word of mouth) output of early recordings with respected conductors, I was expecting something else. To be fair, maybe all those years of playing cross-over music messed up his aesthetic sense and sensitivity?

to all idiots criticizing:the beethoven violin concerto is the most difficult in the violin repertory, even the legendary violinists were afraid of playing it.david is an amazing violinist with excelent technique.go to watch his bazzini or sarasate.if he plays other kind of music doesn t mean he is not good, the man wants to make money and i respect that cuz he deserves to make money he worked hard for that.and in the world that we live pop music is much more apriciated than classical

Anybody knows why he is sitting on the chair? Untasty parody of Perlman?
poor guy, I wouldn't like to be on his place, this smiles of orchestra members...Maisky currently plays also with many intonation mistakes but nobody says one word of critic and Kremer doesn't protest to play with him...however they both WERE brilliant musicians...

Augustin, I heard you play a recital several years ago in Little Rock, Arkansas and was impressed by your technical ability. You are one of the best technicians in the world today and are also solid musically. However, I can't say I was moved or sensed a striking or profound musical personality at work. This is in contrast to arguably the most famous violinist of his generation, Joshua Bell. Bell doesn't have your technique or tone, but manages somehow to be the most poetic and original violinist I have heard in a long time. The second movement of his Barber concerto recording is breathtaking and he gets under the skin of the music in a way that nobody else that I have heard today has. He has an incredible sense of nuance, dynamic and tonal shading. Even though he plays with less vibrato than most other violinists, he still manages to play with more emotion, drama and is a masterful storyteller on the violin. I am hoping that you too will mature into a great artist as well with a similar range of expression.

So this is what Kremer ment and I quote "REAL artists like those that we still remember, haven’t vanished completely. But the “greenery” of Verbier rather contributes to forgetting them and hails mystifications and substitutes of those, who truly served ART. Opposing such a tendency...Lately being warn out by so many dissatisfying partnerships..." Perfect example is this very "personal" interpretation of the Beethoven Concerto.

I'm fairly new at this music and I just don't hear any goof ups...my ear is not trained to notice such things. Educate me here is all I ask. It's a good performance... but you can hear that David's pop career does affect his overall techenique. There's a lack of subtlety in this concerto. Could have been a bad day for him probably, but yeah, it's not world class, just really good. He plays on the same level, or even worse then some of his other performances from decades ago... but damn, I have to admit that I do like when he plays Smooth Criminal hahaha!

I'm sorry, but this performance is not very good... It's out of tune, there's so much excessive vibrato, the phrasing is distasteful, there's no variety of sound, and the tone is harsh. I'm pretty sure any of the fine violinists in the violin section of this orchestra would be able to play better. In fact, I recognize some of the violinists in the orchestra and know that they'd be able to give a much better performance. No offense to David Garrett, he's great at performing many other things.

Garrett is undoubtedly a violinist with a brilliant talent. He plays both classical and pop music and has excellent composing skills.
There are too many performers who only play by reading music.
But the realm of creation is another story.
The new era wants a new performer.
David Garrett is just that kind of performer.
Garrett is the most talented performer.
It will be recorded as the violinist who contributed most to the popularization of violins. This alone makes him the best violinist.
      And Yehudi Menuhin said.
David Garrett is the most outstanding violinist of this era.
