Las Pozas, also known as the Edward James Sculpture Garden, is a surrealistic artistic complex in Xilitla, Mexico, created by British poet and artist Edward James. In the 1940s, inspired by his cousin Bridget Bate Tichenor, James sought a surreal location in Mexico to express his esoteric knowledge. With guide Plutarco Gastélum, he discovered Xilitla in 1945. Initially intended for orchids and exotic animals, the project evolved into a 37-hectare sculpture garden with 27 structures, built by over 150 collaborators. Construction, led by master builder Carmelo Muñoz Camacho, spanned 1951-1984.
The structures, influenced by various artistic currents, lack utilitarian purpose and blend with waterfalls and natural pools. Key constructions include The Stairway to Heaven, a multi-level structure, and The bedroom with a whale-shaped roof. Located seven hours from Mexico City, the garden limits daily entries for conservation. The nearby town of Xilitla, nestled in the jungle and mountains, offers unique streets and scenic restaurants.
