- Join me on a Google Maps exploration of what Alton Towers was like back in the year 2009. Let's see what's changed in the park and in general over the 14 years that have passed since the last google maps update from inside the park. Will your favourite attraction be there? i regret not going on black hole before it closed. I was too scared, I thought if it's in the dark then there must be jump scares. Traumatized from the haunted house 😅

I could talk your ear off about Towers in 2009. I went for my honeymoon that year. It was my first visit since 1998, and the beginning of me being there almost constantly for five years. Hubby was a mistake, but theme park honeymoon was 10/10. Would recommend.
The Skyride station wasn’t new, it had burned down that year.
What strikes me about the difference now is all the flat rides. Submission, Enterprise, Twirling Toadstool, Ripsaw… all gone. Just a slow decline. The retrosquad are an embarrassment.
I really liked Ug Land and Rita as it was meant to be with the Thunder Rock Rally. I’d disagree with you and say it doesn’t fit in Dark Forest at all. I think DF is a bad theme over all though. We have gloomy woods (and now Wicker Man which fits on the edge of it), we didn’t need more of the same but much much worse. I’ve always wondered if I would be more forgiving towards Thirteen if it had a better theme.
Mexican Cantina was pretty great. There was one in Chessington, too. Sorely missed.
I’m old enough to remember the flume when it was log boats and dinosaurs. I got the shock of my life when Uncle Duck jumped out at me for the first time.
I have a horrendous ultraviolet crocodile that I won in 2010, but I never bagged an ugly monkey.

Thanks so so much for watching but thank you even more for sharing your history with me, I do remember the fire now that you say. We do miss the flat rides and I loved UG land too! We do have too many woods based themed lands at Towers currently though.
@@CoasterChicken - something else that you didn’t mention in your video - just how much of the towers themselves were accessible. They would only shut in preparation for Scarefest at the beginning of September, and such a huge section was open until them because they used to take the scare mazes down again afterwards.
You could get into the Pugin rooms, huge sections of the west wing, and the ground floor through the tunnel. I used to take a lunch up there and sit watching Oblivion out of the window.
By 2009 the gardens were already in sharp decline though, because when Merlin took over three years previously they sacked most of the gardeners. Even now there still aren’t enough to keep up with the size of the estate. I’d love to see them sort that out. I’d love to rediscover the start of the stairs through the gardens, too. They disappeared many years ago.
Hopefully one day we’ll see the return of heritage tours. I’m a huge nerd, I’d be totally up for anything like that.
