Hi Alan, thanks for another video. I enjoyed your gearbox videos previously. I have since stripped and service my gearbox. I am now waiting for clutch parts to complete my work. Thanks again for the effort that you go to. Cheers
This is very interesting, I have to do a similar mod on my Vincent tank. How did you purge the fumes from the tank before welding? I find with ethanol in the modern "fuel" there is always a lot of white contamination in old fuel systems, so I always remove the filthy ethanol, which yields surprising percentage results on each batch, by processing 5 gallon batches it gives plenty of good fuel for the occasional use we put our bikes to, it also works much better in garden machinery! Chris B.
I found that simply by flushing out the tank with hot water, any risk of explosion can be eliminated. However I still leave the filler cap off so that any hot gas can escape....... Thanks Alan
Interesting on the carb size selected here. Would a 932 concentric work OK on the 500 c.c. Velocette? It is used on the 850 Commando (I think I spied such a ride in your workshop on some earlier video). I've run a single 932 on my Commando with good results. Regarding float height with the new Stay-Up type floats, Amal/Burlen website states best practise is to set actual fuel level rather than float position for these. Perhaps they have a different buoyancy compared to original floats? One way to check fuel level is to drill out a bowl drain cap to fit a hose spigot and run a clear hose up the side the carb...turn on the fuel supply and see where the level rises to...should be just below the float bowl gasket.
Yes it should work as long as the flange size is compatible. Variability includes, valve timing, (M17/8 Cam in my case) and compression ratio , and jet sizes. Agreed on measuring float height. While I believe "a float level" can be tuned and managed with jet selection, symmetry between carb float level is essential when more than 1 carb is involved. Have fun!!!
Agreed. The taper on the pilot air screw is such that I cannot full control the idle mixture. The air screw has a blunt end. The bore for the slide is an “average” diameter rather than a precise dimension. But, it works somehow and picks up cleanly now with that 4 stroke spray jet at the bottom of the Venturi. For me a positive result.

Another great video Alan. Many thanks for posting.
Thanks.
I have not made a video for some time, but distractions are slowly fading away and I shall get busy again on the Velocette.
Great to have this documented as a reference for future generations of Velocette owners.

These concentrics a pretty poor quality. I fitted an amal Mark 1.5 in the eighties. A much better carb altogether.

I wonder if these are made in China/India.
