This is crazy similar to my upbringing! My mum is white British and my dad Balinese, and I spent my first 6 years in Bali, speaking Indonesian as my first language, before moving to England. I can only speak the basics of Indonesian now and would really love to relearn!
Hey Sinead - I just want to say, congrats on your journey in reclaiming your Indonesian identity! I'm Indonesian too, but I've lived abroad for about 26 years now (I'm almost 28). I actually went through a phase in my life where I constantly wanted to deny my heritage, because I felt I couldn't understand it, the people, the culture, their way of doing things; but once I was truly surrounded by people who I thought were like-minded (i.e. living in the US around many Americans), I felt like I also didn't belong there, either. I started reading books in Indonesian and of course struggled, but it was a beautiful experience for me. I started out with Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind) - and it was honestly life-changing. I started to understand the mindset of Indonesians, their nuances, their struggles - simply from reading a book in a language that was unfamiliar to me. And that book was the start of an equivalent journey to yours...of reclaiming my Indonesian identity. Sending love from a 'kakak' living abroad hehe :) Good luck with your studies & your youtube channel! You're doing amazing.
My son and I discovered your IB Maths and Physics videos as a resource for him in his studies. We were impressed with how articulate you were in those and you continue to impress in this video. Congratulations on learning Indonesian and expressing the value of your cultures, particularly in the context of an IB education. Thank you for sharing this journey.
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you enjoy the content. I wish your son luck in all his studies! Please let me know if there are any other topics about the IB which I can cover for him.
