When I have a large mold to fill I like to put my past resin pieces that weren’t so great in the middle, if it’s a solid color of course. It saves on resin and gives use to the stuff that didn’t turn out. Marbles and tinfoil balls work well also.
I was working q lot with mica powders and resin. I used to mix it in, just as any liquid colors. Then I got smart and started to use the mica powder on different surfaces in my molds. The difference was a wow factor much higher than expected, and the big plus was how much less mica I needed per piece.
Just want to thank you. Making photo tiles, crosses and bookmarks for Christmas gifts. Nothing fancy, but learned it from your videos. Thank you so much.
Thank you for breaking down the cost & giving what you would sell it for. Could you please break them down like this in the future. It's nice to get an idea of what something like this would cost to make.
The whole project is amazing, but I couldn't get my eyes off the beautiful scales of that snake. I envy you for the 3d printer, but I don't think I could fit it anywhere. I'm already using all available space in my home for a million different art and craft projects. 😄
Try you local library. 3 in Tulsa have one. We also have a Makers Space with all kinds of other tools like vinyl cutter, laser engraver, loom, cnc mill etc. If they don't have one try to find a local Makers Space. They're around & might not cost much per month to use equipment. Another idea is to find someone online who will print it off & mail to you for a fee. Just some ideas in case you or someone else are actually serious about it. 😉😊
I use a cotton swap or tiny piece of makeup sponge affixed to a tooth pick dipped in denatured alcohol to clean up the messy bits. You have to keep dipping and squeezing out the swab but it does clear it up quickly and very cleanly.
That skull is wicked! I absolutely love it! The base is really cool too! It kind of has a distressed look to it which goes perfectly with the skull. Fantastic!
Great video as always Steve, just a suggestion based on my many years of 3d printing, best thing I've found for bed adhesion rather than glue sticks is a product called 3DLAC (aerosol version), very effective and a lot less messy than glue sticks.
I have been looking for the gray color of mica power, when I finished watching this episode I was so happy I now know that it can be maid and how. Dude thank you so much.🤗
Hi Steve fantastic video as always for painting the snake could you not turn the mold inside out and then put it back inside inside if that makes any sense or wouldn’t that work
That skull was really gorgeous Steve! The base was awesome too. Do you find that the 3D printer uses a lot of electricity at all? I always think these machines must cost a lot to run. Is that the case? I love your channel Steve. You are a brilliant UA-camr. One of my all time favourites! God bless you and all those you love. Have a great day!
I love listening to you as you’re working . As person who feels a little idiocy with techy stuff; I’m worst now than ever, I’m glad to find I’m not alone 😅. I’ve been up all night looking through molds, and all kinds of mica powders. And, during the day, I was working on how to use my Cricut Machine; it cuts, but nothing like a 3D printer. I do know I’m a Madd Hatter, however being up all night for crafting supplies maybe getting me into a bit of trouble. 😊Questions: Do you feel it’s necessary to get a particular mica powder. When using mica type powders, can you tap a brush with water to help it go on smoothly, then let it dry before your pour in your resin?
Can I use a back massager on low to help get bubbles to rise up? My hands sometimes stop working and I drop things and don't want to mess up any resin projects I attempt
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Thank you. I have tried some different brands and they just don’t look like gold. If you are using a different gold now I would love a recommendation!
A silly question; when painting mica powders on the inside of a mold, would it be easier if [assuming it is possible] the mold was turned inside out and then turn it back for the pour?
I’m just trying to find the best value mica powder but j diction don’t sell to Australia. Can you give me any tips on what to look out for. Much thanks
Hello Steve! It is because of you that I have started doing resin molding 🥰 thank you so much for your content. I tried 2 simple heart molds to begin with, and I painted both with mica powder before pouring in the resin. I didn't use the mold release spray. I just went straight from the mica tin to the mold. My finished product came out poorly 😢 The mica did not set into the resin and wiped off when I ran my finger across the heart (not the whole thing, just the center area of the completed piece). What should I do differently next time?
i just tried this yesterday, and when i demolded today out of 16, one was sticky on the back so im giving it more time, two seam to have pulled the mica off...? one is really bad almost like there is air betweem the mica layer and the resin (but not a bubble).... i hope you see this and maybe know what im talking about ... thanks
Loved this Skull i love watching your tutorial's and love how you let people know what you can and cannot use in resin and could you try and work out how you could make a bottle opener with the skull as i would love to know if you can i used to resin about 16 years ago was thinking of going back in to doing it with watching your videos and a few others on here.
Wow I love the skull I learn so much from you. I now would love a 3d printer like yourself I no nothing about technology lol didn’t even now what one was till now. Think I will have to talk nice to my husband.
At the start, you added white mica powder to the small plastic container, then a little black. But when you started stirring to mix, it looked like there was a liquid present that you didn't mention adding. Was there? If so, what is it & how much? maybe it was just my imagination ... Thanks.
That came out really well!!! ❤ & just in time for Halloween!!! 👍😃 Is it possible to make a silicon mold of a 3D printed item so you cold cast it in resin or would the silicon stick to the 3D printed item?
I love doing my resin but unfortunately it doesn’t like me…I can only do it once a fortnight and then suffer the discomfort of sore swollen itchy eyes and itchy skin. I have a full face respirator, apron and plastic sleeves. I don’t want to pack it in because I love doing it but I just don’t know what to do 😢 I love the way the skull turned out 👍
It's really weird this video is labelled why would you use Mica powder, but you are talking about a 3D printer I don't get it I normally enjoy the hell out of your videos❤❤❤

Flip it inside out then clean up after it’s flipped back Steve. So much easier and it turns out awesome.
I LOVED WATCHING HOW THIS MACHINE WORKS .i would love one of them ,but i am to old to start now ,but i love watching it working .🙋♀

Oh noooo, there's always room. Lol thats what I just told my husband.
Thanks!
That's fantastic, I never thought to use mould release before applying mica powder!! Thanks for the tip!!!💖
Steve the plinth you 3D printed.
Can you make a silicone mold from it?
I use a cotton swap or tiny piece of makeup sponge affixed to a tooth pick dipped in denatured alcohol to clean up the messy bits. You have to keep dipping and squeezing out the swab but it does clear it up quickly and very cleanly.
Fun! You’re right, the mica worked in perfectly, so cool! TFS Steve!

I find myself turning my mold inside out to paint them, but I do like the way you have done and the results absolutely amazing

I love dusting my molds with mica!! Especially sketched molds! And loved you showed 3D printing I’ve never seen one before but heard lots about them
I always turn the mould inside out when painting mica on it. Then use alcohol spray on a cuetip to clean away access mica 😁

Love it!!! The only thing i would do is color the snakes eyes to make it pop...other than that it looks awsum ☺
sir! you are simply genius!! i love your work and this is so amazing!
I really love the way it came out. ❤️
I absolutely love this project! Halloween and all things macabre are my favorites! Thank you Steve 😊!!!
I did a couple of pieces like this s recently, a skull pot and a large dragon head. I turned them inside out to 'paint' the powders.
That project came out so beautifully. I am very impressed with your 3d printer.
I just got this mold last month and I love it 😁
That is really cool. I always learn so much from your videos!
Awesome! I have some flat ones I may use this technique..they are to shallow for different resin colors.
I've been making those skulls recently. I love the base!!
beautiful job like the detail you give. thank you

Steve, can you point me to the gold mica powder you used? I am having trouble finding it at jdiction. Thanks!
Hi Scott I am not sure they still have it in stock? I will check it out.

Awesome Job! I love him! I’m going to try making him! Keep making these videos they are so interesting
Do you know how much the import duties are for this printer to the UK?
wow that's very cool. I like the base too. also thanks for adding the prices,
What kind of brushes did you use? I trying chameleon powder but it’s not coming out well.
Super cool!! I love it❣️

hi steve you should get a resin printer much more detail and strength in the items made ..i have been printing for years and love doing it

that turned out absolutely beautiful ,I wonder if you could do the 3 D chess pieces like that
Brilliant Steve, just found you. 😃
❤wow looks stunning 😍
Love your videos. Can you use dried coffee grounds in resin? Either as filler or to use as coloring?

Very cool! Is there a reason you don’t turn the mold inside out for the mica powder ‘painting’ portion?
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts lol
Thats what I have to do as well. Thats the only way I get the color in the right spots. Lol
With a bit of care you could easily use this to paint numbers on dice. The trick would be to just brush over the ridges and not touch the faces.
I can't help but say, ooooh!!....aaaahhh!!!
Super cool!!!! 💜
Genius! 😍
where is th list of product he says that is under the video?
I luv it!!!
If there was a way to accent the eyes of the snake, I think they would show up a little better, plus look neat too.
That came out really well!!! ❤ & just in time for Halloween!!! 👍😃

Beautiful ❤️🇦🇺
great job
hi i.m new to this i think that yr skull is fab thanks alot
I love how great your skull came out that is great color placement. Love it.👻👻👻🌟🌟🌟🥰🥰🥰🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🌟🌟🌟🌟
Do you think you could use the mica powder and then melt 3d print scraps into that mold? Would the mica powder stick?
When u gonna make a dragonball with resin? Looking forward 😸
I love music…what kind of music you like?
Did you say UV resin? I thought you would use deep pour resin for that
I put my mold inside out to do that
Hi Steve, I’m just trying
How much is 55 pounds
