For females, Obstacle race apparel is a little easier to modify for the heat. Unless, of course, you are a man who will wear lycra capri yoga pants! :-) Those plus a sweat wicking sleeveless shirt will do the trick. The key with a race in a warm and humid environment is to make sure you stay hydrated (8oz/ 15 min of exercise). Also, be sure to avoid putting on and petroleum based sunblock or lotion as these will trap heat in. You will still need to vaseline up your feet and then wear a tight running sock like a Smart Wool PhD sock and then a regular crew sock over it. This combo will limit the friction on your feet. Good luck!!!

+Jason Rulo . Question - should I practice running with Vasoline & special socks while training (if dry) or even practice with wet shoes?? I'm concerned about sliding inside my socks? I certainly don't want to risk blisters from training beforehand but not sure what to expect with slick Vasoline beneath what is otherwise a solid grip surface. Typically I've just made the switch just for the race and been okay with 5k mud runs, but longer ones have = blisters having not used Vasoline before.

+Matt Stieg Matt it's not necessary to practice treating your feet. Allowing the sock to slide over and not rub the skin is the purpose. The foot lubricant that I like the best is called Trail Toes. It will not dissipate as fast as Vasoline. Either way, if you are worried about blisters then be sure to wear a sock liner. Ininji compression toe socks are prefect for this. The combo of Trail Toes and Ininji has gotten me through multiple World's Toughest Mudders with no blisters.

I ran 2 so far and I think I was thinking to go shirtless on the next not to show of my body I would rather wear a shirt but the last races it got wet and makes it harder to run with a soaked t shirt so don't have one on it solves that problem

Those BDU pants are going to be heavy and chafing when they're wet. A much better option would be compression pants under light shorts.
Boots are a HORRIBLE idea if you're trying to be remotely competitive. Not only will they screw up your feet if you run long distances in them, they're going to be really heavy when wet. Lightweight shoes like the Vibram Spyridon are a far superior choice. Yes, they do have grippy soles.
Wearing something to protect your forearms might be a good idea for all the low crawling you may be doing.
Look at what the guys in the top 5% are wearing. Don't see any heavy attire there, do we?
Good call on the Vaseline, proper socks, and spandex undershorts. Cotton socks suck!

Thanks for checking out the video. I'm glad you take part in the awesome sport of OCR. My recommendations are based on my experiences and from what I see as ridiculous errors from newbies on the course. Attire is obviously a personal choice. The being said. I typically wear Frogg Togg pants that don't absorb water and have zippered vents for cooling if necessary. As for the Valsetz boots, I have completed two World's Toughest Mudder 24 hour races in those boots and they are awesome!!!
Regarding the attire of the Top 5%... You see all kind of gear, and since I'm usually right up there you will even see pants and boots. :-)
To each his own! I'll see you on the course! Hooyah!

Some races require boots for the competitive wave.

I don't recommend gloves because you will lack the tactile feedback. This is even more important when you are wet. The gloves could loose their grip and you may not realize it. At least if your hands are slipping you will know it. Ultimately this is your choice but I feel bare hands are safer. Good luck!!!

I've run a few mud runs and I'd have to disagree with most of his advice. From my personal experience less is more when it comes to clothing unless it's cold outside.

I run OCR and I would never wear pants or boots. EVER!

The best pants: www.scoutshop.org/boy-scout-men-s-polyester-microfiber-switchback-classic-fit-pants.html. Basically bathing suit pants! Not sure if these are the “best” boots but they are light, have a deep tread and drain H2O: www.imudrun.com/faq#t7n149. Merrill Moab Ventilator Mid. He is right about covering up your body.

    Gloves or no gloves?

I appreciate you checking out my video series. I plan the worst and hope for the best. SEALs complete all of their boot camp in pants and boots. I have done it all with the equipment I suggest with no problem. To each his own. Godspeed on your racing!
P.S. Boots have zero buoyancy in the water so not much resistance there as long as you aren't swimming a tri :-)

For those of you who experienced the Swimmer's Itch issues at the 2013 MidWest Spartan race or if you heard about it then read the article in the video description.

That's a lot of clothing good lord.... I wore trail running shoes with synthetic socks, dri-fit shorts and a dry-fit shirt for my first Super Spartan and it was perfect. Didn't get bogged down, didn't get chaffed, didn't get cut up and had decent traction given the enormous amount of mud and uphill/downhill on loose terrain. Also if there's a swimming portion, good luck with those boots!

  • @silvermediastudio
    @silvermediastudio 11 років тому

True true, though I think the SEAL concept is more a "train as you fight" considering they can't wear lightweight shorts and shirts into combat. For what it's worth, the top obstacle racers save a couple go shirtless.
Looks like an awesome facility though, if I was in MO I'd definitely get out and train with you all.

Thanks for checking out the video John and the comments. I've done 12 races of this type including the 2012 World's Toughest Mudder and have had great results and no issues with my gear. I'm all about planning for the worst and hoping for the best. To each his own. Good luck with any future mud runs.
