- Mentalist and illusionist DERREN BROWN discusses his work on the psychology and philosophy of well-being. Derren Brown is a mentalist and illusionist who has written several best-selling books and - a first in the history of magic - has toured with eight sell-out one-man stage shows. He wrote the brilliant and candid book “Happy,” which aims to reclaim happiness and enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory. By taking control of the stories we tell ourselves, by remembering that 'everything's fine' even when it might not feel that way, we can allow ourselves to flourish and live more happily.

Derren is one of the most interesting people to listen to.
Technical suggestion. To improve the quality of the recording for the viewers, can you record the two video streams at the source then combine in post processing. This could totally eliminate voice and video dropouts. Come on. You are the Google Braintrust you can do it :) Loved the interview! Brilliant.
Maybe it’s because there’s no Google product for that, therefore there’s no way to add a watermark for that.

Darren Brown is a legend. Explaining the pendulum as a way to communicate with the unconscious in Tricks of the Mind book was fascinating.
Excited beyond belief for this. His book of the same title was astounding.

I guess I always knew what stoicism was in some sense. I'm against complete pessimism however, because too much can cause people to curse their fortune, and seek control of things outside themselves. Ultimately relinquishing control and devoting ourselves to something outside of ourselves, is what gives our lives meaning, whether that's a romantic partner, our children, world peace, technology, etc. Happiness is too transitory, but meaning gives us reason to motivate ourselves and live life to the fullest.
And Derren!
I would so love to interview Derren.

I think the voice that tells us that something is not within our control is dangerous though. If we listen to it with too much obedience, it can lead to laziness, passiveness, addiction and being dominated. Perhaps striving to overcome challenges, and convincing ourselves that taking on challenges is a fun and can bring happiness, is the key to happiness. If result is what we value the most, it may set us up for frustration, but if we can imagine that the process of combatting the challenge as medicine for happiness, then we can achieve sustainable happiness.
And with that, you've explained the American War for Independence.
@Rendroc. I know what you mean, but Derren is referring to things that are out of our control, not things that we have control over, but give up on.
