By the way ting is made from jamaica grapefruits which is naturally sweet like an orange but a bit tart. You probably easier for you to get a pamelo from a asian store.

What if you added add from a ginger bug to give it natural carbonation without the soda water? You would have a carbonated grapefruit ginger ale.

I just brewed one of these with erythritol instead of sugar (Used 1/3 more erythritol than the amount of sugar). Also, I added the grapefruit juice to the mixture when the boiling water was added. This was absolutely fantastic! I've never had Ting before, but this is definitely something I'm going to keep on tap.
I might make the mixture 1:2.5 vs. 1:3. Just a slight bit more sweetness would be perfect. Although, that just might be the erythritol rather than sugar.
    Thanks for posting this!

Glen, I tried your recipe. Wonderful drink in itself. But after doing some of my own research, the Ting label says it uses Jamaican Grapefruit. Which is here in the states and in Canada the Uglifruit. A tangelo, which I think would change the taste of your recipe to that closer to the real Ting.

Love grapefruit. Personal preference for the Oro Blanco over the Ruby Reds. That would give you a clearer colour in your mix due to the meat being white in colour. Since it is a sweeter less acidic fruit you may be able to cut the sweetener a bit but may need to up the citric acid.

When I make soda, I melt the sugar into heating water on the stove, like a simple syrup. You don't have to boil it, so it cools off faster. I also use champagne yeast to carbonate - which makes awesome foam - and pasteurize it to stop the fermentation when it's done. I'll have to try making a video sometime =)

I would expect that the taste difference may be in the fruit. Ting is made from a Caribbean fruit, and who knows where the grapefruit you used came from. But I like the idea, and will definitely be trying this one. Coca Cola makes a product line called Lift. ( Sold outside of North America ) I had some grapefruit soda in German once. Thought it was a little odd but had a fantastic flavor.

Ting will be made with cane sugar, and while refined white sugar from beet or cane should be the same, theres a good chance that a less refined cane sugar is being used, and there will be a hint of molasses there...

As someone who REALLY likes Squirt (ruby red, specifically) I am curious how Ting compares.

Rota Abyssian I just saw this at Walmart and thought about getting it. But i dont think I'd enjoy grapefruit soda. Do you have to like grapefruit a lot to like it?

@@dylanalarcon7708 Not really. I don't eat Grapefruit all that often, but I've loved squirt my whole life.

If you didn't know it was grapefruit, you'd probably never guess.

@@R0KURU I can't disagree, especially Ruby Red Squirt.

2 years late and 2 dollars short...
Ting is everything that Squirt is trying to be, but isn't. It really is the quintessential grapefruit soda; if you already love Squirt, Ting will blow your mind!

Looks like a winner! I am a bit partial to red grapefruit so that will be on my bucket list as soon as they are available over here. Wonder if a dash of vanilla extract would add a little something to bring out the flavor a bit more.
    Cheers!

Glen just recently came by your channel and love it! Could the basic flavor profile of the soda be affected by the type of sugar (cane vs beet)? Have you tried to use your refractometer to measure sugar levels of the original drink vs your own?
    Great video and great channel

I fraking love ting! They changed the recipe in Canada and it tastes like Chinese dollar store candy now! I now buy it by the case from USA. The plastic bottle stuff. I drank so much in Jamaica as well of coarse. Other brands like grace are pretty bad too.
