Sorting through curated memories nearly always conjures smiles and storytelling. It’s such a joy walk down memory lane with my clients.
There are two problems though that are common:
    1. Memorabilia is scattered.
    2. Memorabilia has become utterly unruly.
In this video I tackle problem #2 by sorting through my own memorabilia to show you how to break your past into categories. (I also have some non-paper mementos, but this is a deep sort of the paper ones: the tickets, nieces' art, travel memories, friends’ wedding invitations, and much more.)
My own memorabilia boxes in the bedroom closet had started to take up more room than I felt they should. I also realized that I had room in my files. So, if I was going to file away some memories to make more shelf space, they needed to be broken down into folders. There’s a photo at 8:50 listing the exact categories I used to file most of it away, cutting my memories down from 2 boxes to 1.
Please leave a comment sharing how you sort and store your memories, and if you have any unique categories of memorabilia. Enjoy!

I love maps, my absolute favorites are stylized subway/metro maps, so I had that collection going for awhile. And then had the idea of cutting them up to a CD insert size, sliding them in old CD cases and putting them up. Now it's a cool little wall installation that I add to as I visit new places.

Thanks for sharing! I love this idea. I bring home a lot of maps from clients' homes when they are dumping them and I use them as gift wrap. It's really beautiful, actually.

Thanks! It was a fabulous thrift store find. I paid $50 for it, and spent at least that to have it delivered. We keep our luggage in it.

I have three kids, ages 23, 19, and 14. I cannot tell you how many office storage boxes I have(at least 20) of their photos, invites, school work (that's the big one!) over the years meaning to make albums, etc and they take up the majority of my top closet space... would love a video on organizing memorabilia similar to your niece's stack into their own categories. Thank you!

Hi Cecilia, sorry for the late reply! Check out my UA-cam video "How to create a memory closet." Pay attention to the different types of boxes I use in that video. You may not have room for one large memory closet, but with a combo of flat and deep boxes, you'll be able to begin breaking their memories down into categories such as: art, school, writing, trips, photos, etc. Hope that helps!

I had a question on children's pictures you by the packets from the school I was pretty good at sending them out but they're still quite a few that are just duplicate do I make a scrapbook page of them or do I just let them go

You can probably let many of them go and do something short of scrapbooking them. By all means, scrapbook if you *enjoy* that and the time it takes, but if not, take them out of their big envelopes and store them in a letter-box sized flat-ish box of irregular and oversized photos. I do that and have had many clients start these boxes for large photo odds 'n ends. Hope that helps!

What is your advice for sorting thru 16 years worth of memrobelia. Childrens pictures, artwork, adventures, vacations, stuffed animals, to name a few. And not get overwhelmed...?

Sorry I'm just getting back to you now. I can't promise you won't get overwhelmed, but you can be overwhelmed and still take baby steps! One would be to start by picking out your absolute favorites. When doing many rounds of this, the non-keeps reveal themselves. Also, I can't say enough for photographing items you struggle with in order to let them go. Obviously you won't do this to anything you absolutely want to keep, but it sure does help with the things that are on the line. Hope that helps!
