  • We are digging our electric trench ourselves to save money. We have to dig ~400 feet of trenching and then install 4" schedule 40 PVC conduit. We ran into some unplanned challenges along the way but we worked together to solve the issues in a timely fashion!

ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.

Proximity to a 'home store' is key when choosing a rural home location. It's a balance between living in the country and have reasonable access to retail amenities. If memory serves me, you guys were fortunate to enough to get really good acreage really close to a big box hardware store.

Yess, this is so true and you're recalling right! Our 6 acres is about 10 miles from Home Depot. Thank goodness! There will be plenty of last minute trips to come in the future!

Loved the comment “mother nature gave us an old fashioned kick” 😂. Impressive how confidently you two keep overcoming obstacles! On a side note, does Elaina have any interest in learning to use the skid for this project or things around your property?

She has tentatively agreed to learn how to operate it when it's a low-stakes scenario and there's nothing she can mess up :)

Thanks for watching! I didn't even bother getting quotes for this project for the reason you stated!

Nice job and I wondered if you considered sanding or heating the female end of the pipe rather then your way and to use epoxy and duct tape for that FOREIGN connection (German brand with an adapter to standard thread?)?

    • @MasonDixonAcres

Well the outer jacket needed to grow in diameter, sanding would make it smaller and I don't think heating would have done much since it was steel braided. It is coincidental you commented, I recently talked with the owner again and he said my field repair held up for several months but ultimately burst again while he was using it on his farm. He had to get a service truck out to take the counterweight off and really dig into it for a proper fix.

@@MasonDixonAcres Thanks for your reply on that field repair that "burst" and please reiterate. Did you mean that you would have needed to dig down a little deeper, add a insulation material around the pipe, use a special tool that increases the female part of the pipe for a better fit, or something else? I'm not an expert on working in these conditions of extreme temperatures. Was this a condensation issue that led to the "burst"? Thanks for sharing your ideas on that and I loved the plastic bag trick with the vacuum. All the best of health and happiness to you, your family's and teams! Cheers!
