What an amazing video, thanks for posting it. Cool to see this vintage Regal Roller & the story behind this car. Best regards from British Columbia, Canada.
That is an amazing car! I had no idea the hood ornament must be replaced to the standard hood ornament when the sovereign is not in the car. Fascinating!
As a child I remember seeing a picture of this sort of car in a 1951 book my grandfather sent me on British cars. I've always loved the lines of this period of limousine.
Being a bit of an old car buff, I instantly spotted this Rolls on the news that day. it is my thought that the new King must have requested to be met by this vehicle as the royal transport bods would not naturally send the oldest on the fleet. Thanks for posting this great video.
I did some research on this car, it originally came with a manual transmission, as RR didn't make automatics available till 1953. This car was modified in 1955 will addition of a GM 4 gear Hydra-Matic transmission.
Thanks for the information. I love vintage cars. I remember my grandfather telling me a story about a wealthy Indian maharaja who had a gold plated vintage Rolls Royce.
Good video and explanation. For those in Southern California, San Sylmar, the J.B. Nethercutt collection, has one of each Rolls Royce Phantom model along with other cars, a theater pipe organ, and many automatic musical instruments.
Although old, if maintained well, it should last a very long time. For a long dynasty family, it is so appropriate to display the old transport. Beautiful. Someday modify one of these old babies to electric. I think the King would start a trend and show his support for the environment.
It was purchased in 1949 by Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip for their own ceremonial and private use. (66% purchase tax in those days!) The driver's seat was adjustable so that the Duke could drive it. It was the only Roller to have a straight-8 engine (also used in the Saracen armored car).
@@ds1868 No; it was definitely ordered by them. I found that much out when I read up on the car. In fact, the OP was correct in saying the driver's seat was movable so old Phil could drive it himself. The 2002 State Bentley was presented to them as a gift. But not this car. I'm still curious about the tax though. Remember, it wasn't until the Windsor Castle fire in the '90's and the enormous cost to repair it that the Queen declared that she would pay tax on her own personal income. Which King Charles has said he will also do the same.
Absolutely fascinating. Well done for giving us this information. I rather suspect that, like most things relating to The Palace, the use of the car was carefully considered. It shows continuity, care and fitness for a King, just in case any former user was foolish enough to feel snubbed by it.
Nice video… thank you, Pete. Wonderful automobile. Betcha the king is already thinking about electrifying it. Perfect candidate, not driven far anymore, plenty of space for batteries...
Thanks for the interesting video. CHarles III has been a very frequent visitor to my native Greece, informally, and also as a state visit last year, where he gave an excellent speech on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek War for Independence. I always knew that his father was related to the former Greek ROyal Family, but was surprised to find out that he was the grandson (and Charles III is the great-grandson) of the first king of Modern Greece, George A', the former William of Denmark, who started at 18 in 1863-1913 (where he was assassinated by an alleged madman)

Some context for the Phantom IV model, it was officially restricted for sale to heads of state by the company, hence the low production numbers. As such is comparable in many ways to the Bugatti Typ.41 Royale. Under the hood was the only inline eight fitted to a Rolls-Royce car, a B80 model (the last three? had the B81), part of the standardised engine designs for the military of 4, 6 and 8 cylinders, with interchangeable common components. All except one were sold, that being the third built, which was used internally by the factory as a test bed, and is probably the only Rolls-Royce ever factory built as a pick-up truck or utility. This test bed was used to trial an automatic transmission system, and was briefly used to trial a diesel engine. Sadly it was scrapped. The engines were used in the Alvis Saracen, Saladin, Salamander, Stallwart, Nubian, and many others. So maybe only a few Phantom IV's, but thousands of the engines that powered them were made.

Yes both good German companies now! When the long wheelbase Mercedes 600 was released, it was more expensive than the Rolls Royce Phantom and aimed at heads of state. (I'm not German - Australian, and we don't even have a car industry anymore!)

Well maintained is an understatement. I saw another video on this car which said it receives constant maintenance.
Vintage Rolls-Royce and Bentley can almost run forever if maintained properly. No electronics, just great engineering and craftmanship!
