Damn the lore behind each area is so interesting and depressing at the same time. You did a sick job on this video, can't wait for more like it in the future 👀
It is nice to know that the Souls concept works in each and every part with its own different type of progression and its own lore variation - so similar but so unique at the same time.
Gonna disagree with your take on Latria in the remake - I think the original had a much creepier atmosphere (particularly in the Prison of Hope). The ambient sounds in the original PS3 world 3-1 provided so much immersion we are still talking about it decades later.
I've heard a lot of people say the sound and monsters where misunderstood by the new developers the fat officials in particular. It's such a great game.on ps5
@Ambander1 yeah sure maybe the original is better, I can't comment as I haven't played it. A lot of people say the atmosphere is better. To say the ps5 version is garbage? C'mon bro 😂. That's a bit harsh it's a great game.
@Ambander1comments like this are why I think many people have no sympathy with OG fans. Many of the criticisms of the remake are valid, but the way they are communicated by die hard fans is patronising to new players, elitist in many cases, and just down right over exaggerated and winey, especially considering how other franchises have been handled in the remaster department. I’ve done some research into all the differences and perceived problems, and I got to admit many of you need to get a grip.
what a great video! maiden astrea is my favourite boss in the soulsbourne series, not because of the fight, but because of the feelings she connures. thinking about going to a place that is worse than any place here on earth and her losing her faith but having this deep compassion so that she stays in this literal hell is something i think about on a regular basis
It truly is a beautiful sentiment. When writing and editing this video, I got choked up thinking about the implications of Maiden Astraea and Garl Vinland’s journey. It truly is a tragedy, and yet beautiful at the same time.
Demon souls lore was always my favorite in the soulsborne series. I just love how all the areas are connected in someway (idk about shrine of storms but maybe I'll find out in this video) and just the overall atmosphere of the world Playing it on ps3 and having darker colors helped attribute to that
I know this is over two years old but I just found this channel and you have easily earned a subscriber. The way you speak on the lore shows your passion and I appreciate that. Cant wait to see more from you.
I've watched this video at least 7 times. Truly entertaining and informative. This game was the whole reason I bought my PS5 and I was absolutely blown away with the graphics and gameplay. I quickly finished the game 2 or 3 times then moved on to other games. Years later , after beating Bloodborne, Dark souls 3, Sekiro and Elden Ring I find this video in my recommended. As stated , I've watched this video several times and here I am again to let you know your are the soul (😉) reason I'm playing it again with new eyes and loving every second of it. Thanks for your time and effort it got me to sub to your channel my friend . Hope this comment finds you well
Been waiting for this. You absolutely killed it George. Total masterpiece and now I can finally understand the lore. Thank you for all your hard work and effort that went into it. Can't wait to see more of this
This video is just great, George's passion bleeds through. I've never played a Souls game but I've always been aware of them. This video has got me looking forward to stepping into their world when I get a PS5.
What an incredible video brother. You can see the time, effort and passion that has gone into this project. All of it was worth it. The video was just quality all the way through. From the cinematic scenes that you made to the way you narrate the video. You have done such an incredible job, George. Might have to play the game myself now 😳
I love how this video doesnt feel like a historians distant account of the world of demon souls, it sounds like the demon slayer telling their own story, a first hand account So immersive
Me too!! And so then if I get nightmares, it just feels like a hard part of a level that I keep dying on instead of nightmares based on real life stuff.
This Video is incredible. I’m just now beginning demons souls remake, and this lore is so intriguing to me. So nice to have it all in one brilliantly organized and well made video. This is James Caliber work. I really hope you do this more often.
This is an incredible video on this wonderful game. I adore Demons Souls and think it's tragically overlooked. You did an incredible job breaking it down!
Just got around to watching this, and you've absolutely killed it. I've actually never been too interested in the Souls-Borne games, but I heard James, Tyler and the rest of the community speak so highly of this video and, after watching it in its entirety, I feel like I have a connection and understanding of this world and it's lore, due to your coherent and in-depth explanations of the world and characters. Again, you've really smashed it here. Brilliant stuff.
Really nice video! I’m glad more people are finding and appreciating the original souls game. I wanted to add something about Boletaria. While Ostrava and Biorr paint a largely wholesome and loving picture of the nation, the Dregling merchant offers insight about how cruel and abusive the nobility were. The slave classes were constantly used as canon fodder to fend off stronger forces even before demons were awaken, were commonly executed for disobedience, and were forced to do most of if not all the hard labor and construction.
Hey George, really thanks for making this video and telling the story of the game in detail. I have seen many streams of this game and yet not much in depth reviews. This video got me hooked until the very end even though I've never played the game myself. Thanks!!
The "skeletons" seem to be mummified corpses in skeleton inspired armor instead of being actual skeletons.. neat detail Also the saint to me was allways the manifestation of the saying that the way to hell is paved with good intentions. If your solution to suffering is to basically lobotomize the one who is suffering, youre not a saint but a monster. Also she tells you that theres nothing to pillage and plunder but she is sitting on a literal pile of treasure. Not to mention all the dead soldiers and knights tell me that she is doing a bit more then just take freely offered souls from the inhabitants of the valley. In the end shes actively contributing to the destruction of the world by doing the bidding of the old one. Shes a very deceptive being
After watching this, I realise how much I've missed regarding npc's. Oh well, guess I'll have to play through it again! Thanks for this great video, it's really cool to learn more about a game I've throughly enjoyed.
I finally got my hands on a PS5 a few months ago, and started playing through Demons Souls for the first time. I've been a massive fan of From Software for years, played through every souls game with the exception of Bloodborne, and Demons Souls has been one of the best so far. I know it's not as difficult as some of their other titles, but you can clearly see where some of the souls games evolved from, and I really wish world tendency was kept. It's such a interesting mechanic and could've been used in some really cool ways. This is a great video, i can tell you really have passion for the stories and work put into these titles. Keep it up man!
The remake was great, but it added 3 or 4 extra slots which nerfed it a little bit. It ruined my multiplayer advantage. Much worse was the idiotic decision to alter the audio so significantly. Teleporting to and from the nexus sounded much cooler. Killing a demon boss was followed by a build up victory sound play. It was the ultimate adrenaline "YEAH!" soundtrack. So awesome and it never ever go old. The music was made worse. I give an F to the audio because it broke the golden rule. If it aint broke, don't fix it!
Banger video man. Played this as my first pS5 game over Christmas when it came out. Snow was falling outside, and whether it was the beautiful art direction, the challenge, the gorgeous despair in the world, or just the fire and music in the nexus, this game hit me perfectly. I have played it every Christmas since. Loved learning more about the lore intertwined with your own thoughts on the game. Looking forward to more of your essays! Cheers king
Thanks mate! Yeah, I had a great time with the remake too - played it for hundreds of hours across multiple playthroughs, I think it’s brilliant. Thanks for the kind words, I actually plan on making similar videos for Bloodborne and Elden Ring, so if you’re interested in the souls games there will be more down the line for sure! Glad you enjoyed the video, comments like these make it worth the effort :)
It’s always so nice to watch a video of such a high quality and being able to hear the passion in someone’s voice when talking about a game. Hope to see more from you soon.
Just started this game after being intimidated for so long after I got Platinum in Ragnarok. Love every minute of it so far even though I'm still learning . Great video .
I know it’ll never happen but I’ve always held out hope that they would finally actually make the sixth archstone, it’s so unfortunate that we know so so little about it
This video is absolutely brilliant! Thank you for showing the whole thing in this way, it was so capturing. I couldn't bring myself to play Deamon Souls, but I was curious about the story. This was so perfect! Watched it almost all at once as a background for... knitting :D Great content, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the kind words! I’m really glad that you enjoyed it, I should be making more long-form souls content at some point so stick around for that!
@@LongEaredFox_ Absolutely! Tried playing DS1 and 2, but it feels so... cluncky after DS3 (and now Elden Ring to top that feeling off). It'd so great to be able to still appreciate the game and the story playing your vidoe in the background for drawing, knitting or doing other things. It's a bit like listening to travel stories - yes, I do love to travel myself, but I won't go to all the places. So being able to remotely join the experience this way is so awesome!
It wasn't just Allant who brought prosperity to Boletaria before the Second Scourge. In the Japanese text the king of Boletaria who was given an archstone is described as "ambitious" instead of "diligent". The implication is that after the ancient world's countries had their magic forbidden, this explicitely small kingdom with a very traditional approach to combat slowly conquered them following the ambition of the king (probably the first Allant) and his successors, until in modern times Allant the XII rules over a massive, dominant empire.
One minor thing about this game is the beggining where you see huge demons and humanity rise against them. All the fromsoft games we are exploring the game after all these cool events happened. Imagine if we could have a large scale battle like the picture in the demons souls opening?
THE BLACK PHANTOMS OF 1-4 ARE THE 3 BOSSES IN BOLTERIA?!? WHAT😭😭 I'm finding out so much from this video I've never ran into one of those primeval demons
I remember the last two bosses were a breath of fresh air that they were so easy.. I remember spending a week so so to beat each boss and I never realised how co op works … it was so nice to skim past them lol
I remember picking this up while I lived in Canada back in 2010. I didn't use the internet for guides and things then. So this game was extremely refreshing but I was at a complete loss at what to do. I made it so far in and just game up. Still been dying to play it since.
You should definitely get back into it for sure! Don’t be afraid to use guides on the internet if you get stuck, these games can be quite ambiguous as to what you’re actually meant to do :)
Enjoying the video, just a minor correction, you dying in human form is not the only method of the world shifting towards black. The death of most human NPCs will also cause a shift towards black regardless of if you’re the aggressor or not. As your example in pure white 1-1 you can encounter Executioner Miralda in human form and attack you in the execution grounds, if she dies after spawning world tendency will shift towards black.
Something about the remake, it really sucks that they fucked up the music and the architecture. Just makes me a little sad whenever I hear about demon souls nowadays, it’s such a wonderful game.
Yes! Something I want to do later this year is return to Skyrim for the 10 year anniversary and do a deep dive into that game, as well as possibly getting round to Dark Souls 1. Although my next big video will be a retrospective of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood :)
@@LongEaredFox_ Skyrim would make for a great video in this format. The world building and concept of the “unreliable narrator” makes for fascinating lore with tons of room for interpretation. Keep up the great work!
It’s funny how he talks about the tutorial boss being a walk in the park. It, Demon’s Souls being the first Souls game in the Series, was the first “OP Tutorial Boss meant to 1-shot you that’s secretly beatable.” The disrespect. That’s the OG right there, the one that set the trend. Your favorite OP tutorial souls series boss’s daddy.
such beautiful visuals! I wish I had a PS5 so I could play it. I never got the real experience on the PS3 cause I used the dupe trick to level. the bosses were too easy, it was more the environments that were dangerous. luckily they got better at the boss fights like Malenia, Mohg, Darkeater Midir, & Nameless King. they should have put something like that in the remake to provide veterans a new challenge.

Something about the remake, it really sucks that they fucked up the music and the architecture. Just makes me a little sad whenever I hear about demon souls nowadays, it’s such a wonderful game.
Yurt the Silent Chief is such a cool fucking name.
omg....the voice from 52:12 is the same voice from Fable 1 of the guild master...your health is low do you have any potions or food?
Another banger!
Much appreciated dude
Tremendous stuff Gerg 👌
You probably been working on this for a while, good job man
Absolutely love this review!
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Do you plan on doing deep dives into the lore of other games like you did with this? This video is fantastic and I'd love to see more stuff like it
@@tevocity4673 it just so happens to be the 10 year anniversary of Skyrim this year 👀
It’s funny how he talks about the tutorial boss being a walk in the park.
It, Demon’s Souls being the first Souls game in the Series, was the first “OP Tutorial Boss meant to 1-shot you that’s secretly beatable.”
The disrespect.
Good God, a movie about one of my favourite games. Let's go.
What a brilliant video, heey maaan I appreciate you
Great video, amazing really.
