You could say they came back for him. Because neither of them died, and clearly gaining control over the infection seems to happen quickly with just a small time in the light. I'd imagine within a few months they'd be able to rebuild a safe little corner of the world for the two of them and their cat. Being the first to really begin the Post-Green apocalypse civilization.
