Skansen is the oldest open-air museum and zoo in Sweden located on the island Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. It was opened on 11 October 1891 by Artur Hazelius to show the way of life in the different parts of Sweden before the industrial era.
At Skansen, animal welfare is a top priority. All animals at Skansen live in an environment that is adapted to meet their needs and resemble their real living environment. We always take into account the individual needs of each species, as well as individual animals. Skansen’s animals are cared for by trained staff with experience in caring for and protecting the welfare of animals.
Here you learn about wild Nordic animals, Swedish native breeds, domesticated animals and about life under the surface of the Baltic Sea.
