Something I believe you overlooked in this video: typically these residential combo systems will use sirens as there audbile appliance. The siren will do steady during a burg alarm, and during a fire alarm it will usually do code 3 or some kind of pulse.

Amazing video! Very informative. I’ve never seen or even heard of the Ranger 8600E system, must be very rare. Guess I have another panel to be on the look out for since I’m a sucker for old and rare security systems

Thanks! Caddx doesn't exist anymore (they're now Interlogix), but I know there are 8980 panels on eBay if you're looking for them. This was definitely a steal when I found it, haha

I'm kinda late but nevertheless, very nice and informational video! I'm curious, though, instead of having a standard siren installed could you use a notification appliance that would be on a commercial system, like a low frequency sounder/strobe?

I believe you would provided it's approved by an AHJ or professional's design since they might not be in the list of compatible devices on the installation manual. Chapter 29 does require low frequency sounders when homes are built for those with hearing loss, then strobes for those with a more severe impairment (29.5.10).
I believe NewAgeServerAlarm did pull this off at one point for his brother's system as well. There are 12VDC LF sounders out in the market if installers wish to use those for the purpose of fire protection.

Great video, very informative. What you said is factually correct, but here's the problem I have with the "you can't have a commercial fire alarm system in your home" crowd - it's your house.
Forcing the owner of a single family home, who's otherwise knowledgeable and capable of maintaining their own fire alarm system, to jump through a bunch of hoops (monitoring contracts, outside inspections, etc.), when there are a there are a bunch of commercial systems that are in downright horrible condition despite being "professionally installed" just doesn't seem like it makes a whole lot of sense.

You're correct about that. It bothers me as well how easily commercial systems fall to shambles due to neglect. Frankly, unless it's maintained by some contract, it falls on the owner - both in a commercial and residential setting - to maintain their system correctly. I have no doubt that there are qualified and state-certified individuals who are capable of servicing a fire alarm system themselves, even in a home setting. A commercial system in a house can most certainly be pulled off, but, as you mentioned, it requires them have to jump through some hoops.
I would like to note that those commercial systems can't legally qualify as a fire alarm system if they fall below the AHJ's standard - just like what I mentioned for a home. Does it provide the protection that the AHJ has set out for the buildings? We've seen in the past that it can land the building owner in some hot waters upon discovery of the fault especially after fire. It's fun to poke those things out like in WFA's #whatafirealarmfail, but there's no doubt that we have to take them seriously.

What about big mansions (like bill gates mansion). Do they use commercial fire alarm systems or residential fire alarm systems.

That's an interesting question, which I unfortunately don't know the answer to. I would guess a residential fire alarm system because it tends to be a more cost effective option.

@@BousaiGuy I’m leaning towards Commercial because the regular residential systems aren’t enough for big mansions (like bill gates’s mansion). They probably get companies (like simplex and notifier) to install the system.

@@SomeDudeWithAnExitSign I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case (again, I don't know the specs of the house), but do keep in mind that it would have to be treated as a commercial building system - it's not exempt per Chapter 29.

I like how you use Taswell by C418, it is a great song for background relaxation and I started liking it in 2017
This comment it not to make the song advertised, claiming it in reply will be sorted out in a reply. No options
