I've heard the Iraqi forces defending Baghdad had no coordination since the regime feared radio communication would lead to an uprising. Know for sure mobile phones were banned in Saddam era Iraq, mind boggling when you consider the level of technology they were facing
There were raidos used just for fighting they were just forbidden to talk or meet officers and only focus on combat and military terms of communication to prevent coups

What's interesting is that even though Tommy is kinda right when he said the Europeans were "blowing" the US, a few european countries actually refused to take part in the invasion of Irak, that was seen as an illegitimate conflict, like France and Germany. Sunnis have less elaborate religious hierarchy then shia’ do, shia’s given human beings the exalted status of prophets in the Quran (pretty much saying that everyone is not created equal to people like prophets), while sunni’s do not." so pretty much the same
In response to the guy at 17:20, it really depends on the school you go to. 12:00 The helmets are blue for that exact reason: TO BE SEEN. The UN is widly regarded as a peace keeping force. Shooting at it is equivalent to declaring war to every UN member state. That is why it is so obvious so people think twice before declaring war on the entire world. The status of the UN is immediatly noticeable through that for civilians too. Their protection comes through the organisation that is represented by the blue helmets aka the UN.
The UN is useless. Ask africa. As long as they dont shoot at the blue helmets, they can kill and rape whoever they want while UN just watch as they cant engage if not shot at.
UN peacekeepers get shot at and killed all the time. Because everyone knows that the UN is largely toothless and most of the peacekeepers come from second or third world countries with zero ability to retaliate against anybody.

7:17 I think I know what he meant, but the way he said it sounds like a typical historical myth that needs to die. It's so easy to try and pick on the USA and say stuff like "war was for oil". Unfortunately, the world is a bit more complicated than that. The CIA did not "create" Al Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden, Abdullah Azzam, and other major Arab Freedom Fighters/Volunteers from the Soviet-Afghan War, did. The CIA didn't even create the Mujahideen either. Also, the Mujahideen and the Arab Volunteers aren't necessarily the same people. Plus, Osama Bin Laden never got any direct funding from the United States (he was already rich and used a lot of his own wealth to help out). Although, of course there is a pretty clearly accepted that he got indirect aid, and about 35,000 Afghan Volunteers got training from Pakistan (who was funded/resourced by CIA, China, and the UK, not just the United States). Also, other major players involved in Al Qaeda, such as Haqqani, did in fact get direct cash payments from the USA. So, no the USA didn't create Al Qaeda, but Bin Laden and the boiz did use the resources/funding from: himself, USA, Pakistan, UK, and China. If you are going to say something like that, just add in these other countries as well and not forget their involvement in Operation Cyclone.
Lots of historical myths from people like Europeans, who don’t generally look at US history and carry a general disdain for us. The war was about creating a New Democratic “ally” state. Thus, giving us a new Military base in the region and promoting pro US ideals. That was a bit of a failure. But as fucked up as it sounds I’m glad we went in to both Iraq and Afghanistan. It not only kept our Military sharp and constantly driving innovation and improvements just in time for the second Cold War to begin (2022-______) It also was able to give places like Afghan a bit more western education. I actually know a few people from Afghanistan since we used to play games online a lot. That would not have been possible without the US coming in. The most unfortunate part was that we didn’t do a better job of evacuating those people. Both of my friends have left Afghanistan and are in Italy and Germany respectively. i respect the way youre trying to disprove some things as ''myths'', correctly so. but the way way you downplay the CIA's involvement in 'creating' the mujahideen is too hard to ignore. The CIA played a significant role in providing weapons, training, and funding to the mujahideen through channels like the pakistani intelligence agency, and the ISI. i would be willing to make the claim that without these fundings the mujahideen would not even remotely come close to the amount of relevance and power they gained over the course of those years. so no, in this case i wouldnt really say that ''adding in the other countries'' is a neccesary thing as it would add fake nuance to something that is most definitely revolved around one big central player which is the CIA.
@@PeterMuskrat6968 ''The war was about creating a New Democratic “ally” state.'' that is a narrative that the bush administration only started using AFTER their whole ''weapons of mass destruction'' falsehood got discovered.
Not at all no, indeed the British laid to groundwork for many of the issues we see in the middle east nowadays with the Sykes-Picot agreement. The soviet invasion of afghanistan also allowed Al qaeda to form, though only because the US was still playing cold war proxy war and even then they werent seen as bad people (the mujahadeen I mean) as Bin Laden was respected as a freedom fighter long before he was vilified, rightfully so, as a terrorist. These two events would never have led to what we have today on their own. The US choosing to get involved for dubious reasons and consistently playing their cards without regard for the people and customs and religion and culture of the lands they invade/occupy is the major factor here. It is the easy to point at factor that someone can pull examples for easily (as seen by this video tbh) such as how they didnt find any WMDs,didnt care much for civilian casualties, reinstituted hated officials and did little to appear as liberators despite labelling themselves it. Lets say Sykes-Picot was the cut, Soviet Afghanistan was the first signs of infection (caused by the US, not the USSR - its an Islamist problem we have in the middle east, not a socialist one) and the US involvement in the middle east from the Gulf war to now ongoing actions are the infection spreading and becoming serious.
@@TheCornFarmer1989 No the Soviet Invasion as the infection for Afghanistan, they literally helped overthrew a stable monarchy for a communist regime and then civil war broke out and the Soviets just literally massacres anyone who is a suspected terrorist. A large reason for large civilian deaths compared to military deaths is quite simple, while soldiers come, fight and go home the civilians have to live in the war torn area and you also have to remember the us bombed stuff the Iraq military could use from stuff like bunkers to power and water stations and after the war with no central government left to make repairs it forced the USA to stay and hand out food and water.
Vast majority of civilians died from iraqi infighting not from US direct or indirect attack... many civilians too shelter in Iraqi military building unknownst to US forces at the time; civilians were warned to leave conflict areas but many refused... Iraqi informants quite often gave false intel reports just for money or to solve personal or religious grudges... very common scene was Iraqis blowing up mass crowds of ppl yet ignorant ppl blame the 🇺🇸... another very common scene is Iraqi insurgents dressed in civilian closes getting killed then after the battle Iraqis run in and take the weapons then cry to the media saying 🇺🇸 just murder masses of civilians and ignorant ppl just accept this blatant propaganda...
My parents lived their whole life under Sadam dictatorship and they said it was the best but they hated how he went to war with iran and then Kuwait but still it was the golden age of iraq
People who think the Iraq war was "Illegal" don't know anything about the first Iraq war (the Persian Gulf war) or how it ended. The Persian Gulf war was fully supported by the world. The whole of the UN security council supported what Saddam did there was wrong. That was then ended with United Nations Security Council Resolution 687. That resolution agreed to a peace settlement kicking Saddam out of Kuwait as well as requiring Saddam to allow international inspectors to visit his country to make sure he had gotten rid of his WMDs, in this case chemical weapons which do count as WMDs also, not just nukes. It was know Saddam had chemical weapons and was using them on his people after the war ended to retain power but that eventually stopped after he gained power. But in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion he started to refuse international inspectors into his country anymore. That alone per the UN resolution 687 was permission for all the forces that joined in, in stopping Saddam in 1991 to stop him again (fully this time). The additional things of Saddam planning to get nukes, restart his chemical weapon production and harboring terrorist organizations were all extra modification that in the end didn't matter. That is why the Iraq war of 2003 never went before the UN security council again because it was already fully justified via the security council resolution 687. It is really very simple stuff. But to also be fair it was expected that the allied forces would find production of nuclear weapons in Iraq and a larger link to terrorist organization (there was only minimal links). In addition to that everyone in the world knows that Saddam was a bad guy and that he 100% did use chemical weapons against his own population. During the invasion a chemical weapon production plant in Sargat Iraq was sized in "Operation Viking Hammer" (it was not in operation at the time it was captured) and another was chemical weapons plant was bombed after a SAS team could not secure it do to the heavy defense there. So that one could have still been producing chemical weapons based on the very heavy defense Saddam dedicated to it. And the bottom-line is everyone in the world knew Saddam had chemical weapons prior to 2003. We had seen him use them on his population for years to that point. What he did with them we can never be sure until further information is declassified by the US military. The expectation is they were delivered to Syria or destroyed. The Syria explanation makes the most sense based on what happened there in the following years. So saying the Iraq war was illegal is just falsely not correct. You can make the claim it was unjustified or not smart which I may agree with. But then you need to put your mind into that of a American living in the 2001-2003 period after having just suffered the biggest terrorist attack in human history with the goal of never letting that happen again. I don't think any US President ever would not have seen the perpetual worst dictator in the world, Saddam Hussain as not a potential threat to the safety of American citizens. In addition to all of this, why would Saddam just not agree to allowing the UN inspectors that he previously agreed to allowing in come in if he h ad nothing to hide? It made no sense which further fed the believe that he did have WMD's still (again WMD's are not just nukes but chemical weapons as well). Further when the invasion was imminent he was still given a chance to leave with billions of dollars and he still refused to accept that deal. He could have spent the rest of his life in luxury but chose not to.
this entire argument just collapses instantly cause of the simple fact that saddam DID NOT refuse weapon inspectors into iraq. literally one of the main reasons why germany and france refused to join the iraq war, was cause they believed the weapon inspectors who were present in iraq at that time should be given more time? like its just a false claim to say he refused to let weapon inspectors in. ua-cam.com/video/ZTpSZnNtCnk/v-deo.html

He also thought that the UK shouldn't profit from other countrie's national resources, so he attempted to nationalize the Ango-Iranian Oil Company. The CIA put him out of office in 1953 and replaced him with a pro-west monarch, Reza Pahlavi, who let western companies exploit iranian oil field. He also enacted many reforms to forcefully modernize and westernize Iran (including women's rights, which I don't condemn, that's good but it's still no excuse to get rid of the legitimate president and let westerners exploit your country's resources, also Mossadegh was the type of guy to allow more women's rights as well). Then they had the Iranian Revolution where shia radicals around Ayatollah Chomenei took over the country and turned it into the terrible clerical dictatorship Iran is today. That was in 1976, and it only took the west 4 years until Hussein was expected to invade Iran in an attempt to stop the revolution and reinstall a pro-west regime in 1980, this is the beginning of the first gulf war. Ended with a cease-fire in 1988. Iraq was in extreme debt, Hussein was promised to gain a lot of wealth from the iranian oíl, but the US didn't care about him, they just used him to do the dirty work. So to lower the debt, Hussein invaded Kuwait to demand the cancellation of foreign debt, since from his perspective, he had been betrayed (not saying he WAS betrayed, just explaining his motives). They weren't false accusations just over exaggerations of the truth; there was numerous reasons US finally finished GW1 as was always going to happen; the over exaggeration of wmds was just an add on... the vast vast majority of deaths were caused by Iraqi infighting thus not the US fault
"How do you deal with this without making it worse" You don't intervene in the first place, that is their country not ours and they need to find their own way.

@@AnonD38 If western liberal democracy truly is the best and ultimate form of the state, then it will find its way in time. If not then the basis for intervention is unsound.
@@PurpleCrownVic I agree Saddam was a brutal dictator, that is not what I am arguing. I am arguing that a country should be free to determine its own future and if that means it wants a radical Islamic regime and they are not launching attacks on the US, then we have no reason to intervene in their business. I think it is pretty clear that the US government doesn't care about brutal dictators or autocrats, they care about money and looking good. The reason why the US government can't lower it's military budget is because it has taken the place as peacekeeper of the world and protects other countries so they don't have to do it themselves. European militaries have effectively become glorified anti-terrorist units and leave all the heavy lifting to the US. The US then needs a massive military to defend the democratic world because nobody is willing to take up their fair share. Thus a massive military industrial complex establishes itself and the revolving door in the pentagon means that they always have sway. Companies like Lockheed Martin have a virtual monopoly on combat aircraft production, and such can charge whatever they want because they know the US will just keep shoveling money to them to keep the system rolling. The US then sees a way to monopolize oil-production and produce even more wealth for itself by taking oil fields in the middle-east. They invade countries and cause even more destabilization and conflict and set countries back decades in economic status. The destabilization then causes protracted conflict and allows a further justification to manufacture more weapons. Now you end with generations of young men in these countries knowing nothing but oppression and death by the militaries of "infidel westerners" and thus create more enemies to fight. The Invasion of Iraq was a means to establish a state sympathetic to the US, drive arms production and capture oil fields, and further the western drive to "bring civility" to "savage" non-liberal democratic nations.
@@PurpleCrownVic he wasn't a brutal ass dictator the media made him look that way the crimes against kurds was because they kept rebelling against him while he was fighting against iran and crimes against shias was because of the ideology of Iran that's it media (government) just likes to talk alot of trash to get the iraqi people on their side

The US’s wars in the last two decades have been unpopular, and have been punching a brick wall when it comes to actually stabilizing and setting up new nations. But it has been a very important lesson in how to improve your fighting force in a time when you can’t fight conventional wars that much. We are still top dog as far as military power because we were constantly needing to come up with better equipment and tactics. So… unfortunately for the victims it was necessary.

I love Tommy's content, but I cringe when he talks about politics/anything non-gaming. One example to show why this is not a good look for him. He just listens to the chat and then walks away with bad takes and a false recount of history. In another example, he shows how much he doesn't know about the subject and reaffirms his false views because half of the chat will just meme him on, thus cementing his bad take. Like with war crimes, which is enforced by the U.N., an international organization that is supposed to enforce the peace, but obviously has 5 major players that just say fk off when things go against them. Tommy then says, and the U.S. wants NATO members to give their fair share to the alliance. Yeah, because it was a voluntary alliance that all members agreed would pay 2% towards defending against the USSR and any other threat. NATO is U.S. led and not a diplomatic organization, it's a military alliance. Not giving your fair share to the alliance means you should get completely ignored when you bitch about what they are doing in it. Imagine being in a farmers' commune and not giving your fair share. Then getting mad that the ones filling in your gaps start dictating what you will eat and Tommy would be there defending the slackers as being oppressed. You do realize that NATO is why Eurofks don't need a large military and can spend it on healthcare or free Uni. Imagine being a child on the international stage who relies on daddy USA to defend them from bully Russia and then complaining about the rules of the house. Don't like it, build your own house. If you are going to say something like that, just add in these other countries as well and not forget their involvement in Operation Cyclone.

i respect the way youre trying to disprove some things as ''myths'', correctly so. but the way way you downplay the CIA's involvement in 'creating' the mujahideen is too hard to ignore.
Actually the soviets and UK destabilized it the UK in wwi and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan the us was just salt on a wound

@@Gray777333 It's not really simple things, capitalism has produced far more variety and quality AND quantity for all sorts of goods. 5:10 You install capitalism and give BP 80%-100% of the oil share.
This. Also the whole story of Saddam Hussein is rarely told in the West. Iran once was a democracy that elected a man named Mohammad Mossadegh who wanted to separate religion and state.

🇺🇸 was just to invade Iraq and finish what was started in GW1... 🇺🇸 had many reasons to invade and it was not just about nukes; Sadam had full capability to build them and even provided the west with proof he has full knowledge of how to build them but kept saying he's not trying to; for a very long time Sadam kept refusing full nuclear inspections thus lead to strong suspicions; though very suspicious the west did know Sadam didn't have the bomb though it had a nuclear program... Thus, Iraq having nukes was more of an overexaggeration but not completely without merit... The same nuclear specialist who later helped NK gain theirs first sought after Sadam but Sadam refused the help thinking it was a Cia plot... Main reasons for invasion was Iraq's genocide of the kurds, use of chemicals weapons (a weapon of mass destruction), the extreme torture and murder of 10s of thousands of Iraqis leaving many in mass graves, also Israel, Saudi Arabia, the Iraqi ppl, and other nations for decades begging 🇺🇸 to finally deal with Sadam... The wmd bit was just a add on to spark more support... Also the chance to demonstrate 🇺🇸 power after 9/11 as in afgan war it's hard to demonstrate 🇺🇸 power and Iraq allowed for a better visual... ontop of all that is the decades of 🇺🇸 hatred for Sadam and 🇺🇸 presidents hated for him... FYI Sadam wanted to restore the Babylon empire which he could've done had he instead chose to invade Arabia instead of just Kuwait... The oil nonsense is just ignorant ppls explanations of something they know nothing about; how does spending a couple trillion to take a few billion in oil make sense? Obviously it doesn't and ever military in history uses loot/booty/captured resources to offset the cost of war thus US would be fully just to do so... GW2 was fully justified and so was the first few years of peacekeeping mission; thus first 3 years just but the remaining decades not so per the Iraqi ppl failed to unite regardless of the opportunity US gave them... vast vast majority of lives lost in Iraq were from infighting and Muslims fighting and killing other muslims for for has control over other muslims (thus not the US fault)...

FYI, 03 Iraq war (GW2) was a just war and we had many reasons to Finally finish GW1; the years of peacekeeping mission after the war ended in 04 were also just but after the 3rd year unnecessary; it was a grace for the Iraqi ppl that we stayed so long while they got their shit together but they never did thus why we finally left... The vast vast majority of deaths were caused from iraqi infighting not from US attacking civilians; of the small number of civilians killed by US most were from civilians taking shelter in Iraqi military building unknowingly to 🇺🇸 forces; from Iraqis attacking from populated areas; from missed bombing (civilians were warned to flee conflict areas); from Iraqi informant giving false intel reports for money or to solve personal or religious grudges and using 🇺🇸 to mistake these ppl as a high value target... A very common scene was Iraqi ppl blowing up massive crowds yet 🇺🇸 gets blamed; a other very common scene was insurgents in civilian clothes attacking 🇺🇸 forces then after the fight Iraqis take the weapons then get media to report false claims of 🇺🇸 killing civilians...

I love Tommy's content, but I cringe when he talks about politics/anything non-gaming. One example to show why this is not a good look for him.
