If anyone is curious to see these concepts in practice, check out my new short film, PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB. Lots of sneaky CG and VFX shots in here. Let me know if you can spot any! Watch here: ua-cam.com/video/xJDIIRMAcK4/v-deo.html
I have been saying this for more than a decade. I have been using 3D software in some shape or form since the early 90s. What I see with Blender and now Unity or Unity it opens up so many possibilities for indie filmmakers and animators.
Am really excited, I used to want to produce short films but whenever I thought about budget, and survuving, I couldnt do any films. But now blender gives an opportunity to do everything with zero to little budget....
I started my journey into 3D/CGI a few years back as a hobby. I learned Maya but recently I've been blown away by what Blender is now capable of and I've decided to transition
This is a great tutorial/talk! I use Cinema 4D but the principles you're talking about here still hold up, and I learned a lot of tricks ie the window method. Definitely earned yourself a sub. Thanks man! Keep at it!
I've resumed learning Blender because I alo share your opinion. It's time-consuming to learn but with more and more easy-to-follow tutorials out there and a clear idea of what you want to get out of it, it's definitely a skill to have.
This is why I started my CG journey originally many years ago.. Though I've never followed up on it...yet.. Thanks for making this video and sharing this with the rest of us.. It's inspiring..
This is an awesome video and I also have the same thoughts as you! I learned blender because one, I wanted to add it as an extra skill, and two I realized early on that the scope of what I want to make was far beyond what I can do on set... I'm still new to blender and VFX it seemed daunting at first but after that first step... it opens a whole new world of possibility of what you can do and that rush of excitement every time... cannot be topped by everything at least for me.
Thank you so much. I'm doing my research on this & impact on a global south scale. This content is amazing I'm in awe of how you breaking it down. We're not being taught any of this postgrad production design & costume design.

Great video, thank you for this. I've been wanting to try Blender but it always seemed like such a steep mountain to climb. But videos like this make me want to embark on that journey. Do you have any tutorial recommendations for total Blender beginners? Btw, love the tone of this video!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I totally relate to it feeling very intimidating, and the good news is it looks a lot worse than it is. For a beginner's tutorial, there's no better place to start than the famous donut tutorial by Blender Guru. It's a really in-depth tutorial on how to make a donut, but it's real function is to teach you all of the tools that you're going to use on a regular basis. It's also really easy to follow and fun, and once you've done it you'll be well on your way. I also recommend Ian Hubert's lazy tutorials because they're hilarious, but they also introduce you to a way of thinking about CG that is really fundamental to making scenes like the ones I showed in this video.
amazing dude! I'm a musician that teamed up with a filmmaker last year to make short-form content for my music and we've been discovering this type of filmmaking and we are beyond excited! Mannnn, SUBSCRIBED! I loved this! Thank ysm for the great ideas cause I am a Kenyan musician and I gotta say, it's hella difficult blowing up musically here if your pockets are not heavy and you have no strong connections. Amazing stuff Ben! I've been using Blender for about 3 years, making game assets for Unity, and its only lately I have turned my interest into film making, sci-fi to be exact, its fascinating what can be achieved! I'm curious, what corner of Ireland are you based?
This was so nicely done , I was thinking of a diner scene , a small food stand and you have given me a great idea , this looks so neat .Really Appreciated for the upload.Peace.
Marvellous work on the music video I love the way it looks, really showcases the idea of the video and totally gives a different feel than if it was all CG and say they were shot on a green screen in a virtual theatre it’s that 50-50 or 80-20 practical CG that has you going that’s real, no it’s not weight but that’s real OK maybe it’s all real OK I don’t know but I love it
Yeah, definitely would’ve been a good idea. I did not know about instancing (ALT + D) at the time so I was using SHIFT + D to duplicate those mannequins to make the crowd and so my little laptop was chugging to do anything in the scene by the end. I think a subdiv modifier would’ve sent it into oblivion!

Well done. I am trying to design virtual sets in Blender right now for a screenplay that I have written. If we did it on location, there's a budget wall that is insurmountable, but with virtual sets, it may have a chance.

@@BenMoranFilms Thanks for the reply. I thought you were using software like After Effects or Blackmagic Design Fusion for composition. Filmed images have motion blur, noise, lens distortion, CA. They are not as perfect as the ones created in Blender.
