      @@jacobpereramd8094 Yes! I have a question actually. So I have a 4.0 gpa and am waiting for my SAT score to come in. I did many things relating to medicine so far; such as did a program with med students at Weill Cornell Medical School and I work with a vision care center in the summers. I volunteered to teach kids coding and I am planning on volunteering at a pediatric clinic this summer. I did lots of research as well. What else would I be able to do to get into this program. It seems really competitive. Thanks!

      Brigette Belenky The program is definitely popular which makes it competitive, but based on what you are saying, you are definitely a competitive applicant! You’ve got the grades and some awesome experiences, I would just keep up what you are doing! UMKC really loves to see your commitment to medicine which you have a lot of evidence for with your research and involvement. That combined with your grades makes you a great candidate, just make sure you have some solid contacts (teachers, people you’ve worked with) to write you good letters of recommendation and I don’t think you’d have a problem getting an interview! Once you get to the interview stage it’s all about your personal skills and personality overall!

    Hi! This video was so helpful! Thank you so much! I feel like I don’t have many healthcare experiences, I only have some hours of online shadowing. I haven’t been able to find any in person healthcare workshops and my school doesn’t have many healthcare related activities. What do you recommend to improve this side of my application?

    • @jacobpereramd8094
      @jacobpereramd8094 3 роки тому +3

      This is a really common question! Ultimately what the program is trying to get from this section of the application is proof of your interest and passion for medicine. So anything that helps convey that would be great! If there isn’t a school workshop or healthcare club, think about starting one! Doesn’t have to be super in-depth. I had 4 friends who were also interested in healthcare and we got our anatomy professor to be our staff sponsor. We got together once per week and just talked about current health related events. It shows that you are interested in science and medicine. And sometimes experiences that you may not think are “healthcare” can still really show your interest in taking care of others. This could be volunteering at a retirement community/playing games with the members. Same thing goes for kids clubs or facilities with children with disabilities. Many of them have scheduled daily playtime where they allow volunteers to come and spend time with them/read to them. These are great ways to show how you care for others which we know is just as important as your interest in science and medicine as a whole!

    Do you feel that undergraduate study is quite grueling at UMKC for the 6-year BS MD program? I heard that the dropout rate is very high for this program. Which major did you choose? Were you able to register for the courses that you needed?

    • @jacobpereramd8094
      @jacobpereramd8094 Рік тому +1

      The undergrad portions of the program can be quite challenging because you are on average taking much more classes than a normal college freshman would. This of course would be less if a student came in with lots of AP or transfer credits. The drop rate is high in the first 2 years because students either realize that medicine truly wasn’t for them or that the coursework was too much. I chose the liberal arts major pathway and had no issues registering for classes. Hope that helps!

    When applying to UMKC and other Accelerated MD programs, do we complete the Undergrad and Med school apps separately? And if so, are they both going to be available by early or mid-August on the UMKC website? The undergrad application is separate from the medical school. They of course want to be sure that you would be accepted to the undergrad school before the med school. They are usually available in august since they are due by December and I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea to see if your school could include both weighted and unweighted GPA. I don’t think it would be a big deal I assume UMKC could convert it but I would recommend talking to your college counselor just to see if they could do that.
