Be aware that very few transistor radio's are sold today, they are all digital. Make sure you buy one with 10khz version for US am reception. The asian ones on 9khz.
Broadcast radio is the one form of communication likely to stay up longest as long as there is a connection to the antenna. Additionally, a small radio generally uses less power and battery than your typical phone does, so it will last longer, assuming you actually have cell service still available.
I have found that the C CRANE SKY WAVE is quite useful in an emergency having utilize it during both winter and summer power outage of multiple days. Placed in a Faraday box when SHTF it will endure
AM and FM are less useful because you will be limited at basically local and national news. SW is the way to go for a shtf situation. And the better is to get an analog one while you still find them. An AM, FM, SW radio is better than AM FM only.
Agree. I was a dxer in the 60s I’ve revisited SW over the last several years to be disappointed by the lack of broadcasts. I do believe if a major crisis was to happen the SW bands would be active again.
A top notch AM radio will get stations from 1000 miles + on a good night, which will help you plan for major weather events. Good examples would be the CCrane Ep Pro, or the Qodosen DX-286. I own both and will not part with them ever. OK, until I'm toe tagged...
I think people today should be more aware the unpowered Crystal Radio which was also a common toy for kids in the 1950's to 70's (checkout the Remco kids Crystal radio TV commercials) I have built countless crystal radio sets since my childhood. I presently have 3 AM and shortwave crystal radio sets. and a 70 foot long wire antenna 20 to 40 feet high also used for shortwave reception. The Crystal set is a very simple circuit consisting of a wire wound coil and a variable tuning capacitor, a germanium 1n34a diode and a 2000 ohm crystal earphone. they need no power except from the AM signal intensity from the antenna itself. there are many crystal radio circuits and parts 1n34a germanium diodes and 365 pF tuning capacitors, 2000 ohm earphones available online. These radio sets can easily receive local AM many AM signals over 1000+ miles away at night.

Exactly my point for starting with the local news grabber and moving onto the SWL side of the fence! Thanks for listening!
@JohnL1950 I say the same thing in the SWL episode, it's not what it was--but I anticiate a revival on the horizion! thanks for listening

thanks for commenting and sharing! Sadly the majority will skip on a $20 solution from Amazon. I'm off to look for a kit ;) 73 K4CDN
