...or how to paint Tyranids as Xenomorphs. (Hive Fleet Hadley's Hope) | Duncan Rhodes

- It's no secret that Tyranids were inspired by a certain classic sci-fi franshise and we figured we'd have some fun painting one in the scheme of the Xenomorphs from Aliens... and remember “They mostly come out at night, mostly.”...

My absolute all time favourite movie, I'm pretty sure I've still got kind of a crush on Ripley.
Now you heard the man, assholes and elbows!
How would you go about wings with this theme?
Love this. Seeing some tutorials to change their heads to be xenomorph like has really made me want some tyranids to make this way
Brilliant mate 👍👍
Lv-1 Nid Noob to Lv-426 Zenomorph Enjoyer!
Now we need some catachans/cadians bashed together, converted and painted up to be colonial marines. Smart guns are probably the hardest part though
The smoothness with which Duncan sneaks in references and quotes from the movies is just excellent. Well done sir, you're a gentleman and a scholar!
It nearly broke Rog and me a few times 🤣
This one and the obi wan painting guide have the best references
I caught this too when he said he kept a brush for close encounters, I have no idea how he managed to deliver that line straight faced without doing a Hicks impression.
Every time it activated the single functioning neuron in my brain
Mostly black, mostly.
“Apply the wash all over man, all over!” Lmao
Can tell you had just as much fun making up puns here as you did when painting Obi-Wan
Yup, we sure did. Our favorite is probably keeping the AP detail brush for close encounters! 😂 Almost ruined the shot when we were filming, we broke when we cut 🤣
He did the same thing painting Forge World Metalica XD
The way he said it in a monotone voice made it even funnier lol 😆
When I was 12, I was getting back in to warhammer with my dad, I collected tyranids and tried to make them like xenomorphs, god I wished I had this video to help me back then lol
Better late than never lol
*like xenomorphs I presume? :D
@@Willqer yeah I hadn’t even noticed I put tyranids twice lol
@@Willqer always one isn’t there
That extra "mostly" was 🔥
😁
I love how he tried his best not to crack at that line xD
Best xenomorph painting tutorial I've seen. I'd love to see this colour scheme on a larger nid like a swarmlord.
Duncan: “Now this mostly black… mostly.”
Me: I see what you did there! 😂 I would have named them Hive Fleet Nostromo though… 🤔 I always wanted to do a Hive Fleet inspired by the Collectors of Mass Effect.
I’m going to admit, I like the idea of using the Collectors so much that I’m pivoting right now while I was picking paints. Welcome hive fleet Harbinger.
@@isgibson Hah that's EXACTLY what they would have been called. Maybe when I start collecting them proper.
Glad someone else got the “…..mostly” reference!
My man
You'll find plenty of awesome conversions in Hive Fleet Nostromo of a hobbyist I saw online.
I go with Hive Fleet Furie as a dual reference ti the prison planet in Alien 3, and to keep with the mythical monster motif of naming a Hive Fleet
Duncan! It was right there! "Hive Fleet LV (Leviathan) 426"!
Damn you, Paint Man! I was just fine NOT having a reason to buy 'Nnids and exacerbate my crippling addiction to plastic!
🤣🤣🤣
Fun GW fact, when Space Hulk second ed was being developed GW folks were instructed to never refer to the Genestealers as "aliens" as it was feared they were getting dangerously close to Fox's IP
Wow! That is interesting. It's a great game though, one of GW's best.
Dangerously tip-toeing around 🤣
Follow up fun fact about second Ed space hulk. The design brief for the miniatures in the box was that they be snap fit, it was being used as a gateway game into 40k and the idea was kids with no miniatures experiance could build and play with no glue or paint. The terminators worked great and even had a little action figure articulation.. The genestealers... Not so much.
Since the original genestealers in the Rogue Trader book were pretty clearly inspired by "Alien" in the first place, the circle is now complete.
Gorgeous work as always! The attention to detail in making the teeth 'shiny' like the Xenomorphs is a fantastic touch!
Thank you so much 😀, yes, we wanted to get that right, not just paint them 'silver' or else they'd look like kitchen knives.
That carapace though! That has to be the cleanest looking nid I've ever seen. Going with a black on black scheme always has the risk of it all looking too similar, yet here we find a Nid that is all blank and still visually interesting.
Specular and volumetric highlighting is something I've struggled with, even more so on black. This tutorial is a godsend for me. Also never considered using a colour as strong as Kantor Blue for a highlight or glaze. This requires some experimenting!
I can’t wait to cut through hordes of ‘Nids in Space Marine 2, I’d love to see a full army in this scheme! Love it.
loved the "all over man- all over" and I respect Duncan for providing alternative colors
"Another glorious day in the Hive Fleet. A day in Hadley's Hope is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet. Every paycheck a fortune."
Every formation a parade! I love the Hive Fleet!
Love how simple the grey is on the body, will be using the same method for my Corsairs of Umbar clothing!
I always love Xenomorph style Tyranid colour schemes - a great way to acknowledge a huge influence on the Tyranid model range and lore, and a nice nod to a classic sci fi horror (and military sci fi action in Aliens) franchise.
Thank you
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I have been looking for a very dark Tyranid colour scheme for a Hivefleet of my own invention I am calling Hivefleet Umbra, a re-flavour of Hivefleet Jormanagdr that instead of tunnels specialises in using modified spores to create a pall of unnatural shadows and gloom that its bioforms lurk in and use to terrify, isolate and stalk their prey. I think this colour scheme will be perfect and will allow me to pay my respects to one of my favourite film franchises at the same time. It really is just what I am looking for, so thank you.
Well done. My friends and I always thought an Alien theme would look amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Trying to paint like Duncan...I can't lie about your chances but you have my sympathies.
You can do it 😊
I'm going to have to bookmark this purely for the slime effects around the mouth and gun barrel. Genius.
That double "mostly" at the beginning was
Magnificent! It looks perfect. The perfect organism.
Love all the subtle references you inserted into this!
😁
First off, congrats on making the drool and the flesh of the gun look absolutely minging, you really got that effect achieved.
Second, this guide will make a great starting point for an idea I've had for several years now of painting up some Tyranids like deep-sea creatures with bio-luminescent bits. Now the main things I'll need to do is decide which bits I want to glow, and get good at object-source lighting.
Eyes and claws, I did a couple deathwatch killing tyranids and use Vallejo fluo for edge highlights, it words surprisingly well
I would suggest the vent like gaps in the flesh and possibly the gun ammo. Deep sea creatures use their bio-lights for hunting and distraction so maybe the nids can hide their glow under skin flaps etc. Would look amazing
@@thomasstockdale1783 You know, I've tought about this, and what I came up with was that maybe these 'nids would use the glowing patches like zebra's stripes; to hide their numbers and confuse anything trying to attack them as to where one 'nid ends and another begins.
But your idea sounds good, too.
I only ever bought one of the original Genestealers, during the eighth decade of the last millennium.
I have been waiting 33 years for a suitable painting tutorial in 'Aliens' colouring.
I saw the pics on Instagram yesterday, and hope you'd release the vid, thank you so much Duncan.
Time to watch the betamax again.
Wait, we're genestealers out back to in the seventies?
Love to see more of these guys! More Hive Fleet Hadley's Hope!
I remember other yotubers doing a similarly inspired schemes. It's great to see people taking inspiration from others.
I love it, when you casually sneek in those movie-references!
The way you chuck in references so drily is amazing. Also awesome tutorial, I will totally be going with this scheme for my Nids!
Brilliant and really enjoyed the subtle quotes from the films too! Would love to see more content based on this theme
Nice touch on the eyes, really sells the xenomorph. That was a great idea.
Great to see the 'nids going full circle and returning to their true roots!
The buttery smoothness with which Duncan dropped in call backs was perfect.
I gave this a thumbs up before I even watched it. Anything with Xenomorphs in the title is awesome!
Nicely done, Duncan……mostly!
Really enjoyed this one Duncan!
Love this scheme! painted about 2500 points worth of my Nids in this style so far and loving how they've turned out. The highlights somehow manage to keep the xenomorph 'feel' whilst simultaneously giving a nice dash of colour that prevents the model from looking like a tryanid shaped black void on the tabletop. Thanks for creating this!
Game over man.
Game over!
When I first saw Tyranids I immediately thought of them as Xenomorphs. Happy to see someone take that to the next step and paint them that way. Great tutorial. I might try this if I get some Tyranids myself.
Your videos are always so beautifully edited. It's awesome.
Rog knows his stuff
Having the gun muzzle "drooling" is a wonderful touch.
Wow! Now I want to start a Tyranid army just to recreate the last stand of Hadley's Hope. Starting like now!
Excellent scheme, and an awesome vid.
I love it! You blended the two styles together so well, it looks awesome!
Once again Duncan awesome job
The casual drop of quotes from Aliens make this video mostly hilarious, mostly. Really cool scheme, and great video as always!
Thanks so much for this! Loved all the subtle nods to the movies as well. Great work, as always mate.
Pure genius and well-executed!
I needed my daily dose of Dunc.
Thank you Dunc!
wow this is so cool, looking forward to get the kickstarter paints :D keep it up!
This is so good I wish I could like it twice.
Incredible, good job dude.
This is my favourite painting tutorial EVER!!
Wow, thank you! We are glad you enjoyed it 😊
Using a Xenomorph inspired scheme for Tyranids, on Xenomorphs :D Honestly this is the best painting guide I've found for the actual Aliens figures ;)
Looks amazing!
As a huge Aliens Fan this was gold for me. I don't even paint or play Warhammer anymore. Just like to watch painting
This is so awesome!
Probably the most natural and well executed Aliens scheme I've seen. Not surprised it was Dunc's take on it.
Man that reference when the washes started was outrageous. The detail brush one made me actually groan.
Awesome scheme though! It's the one we've all never got round to I'm sure, and it being so uniform in colour is definitely a factor. Cheers for the ideas and techniques!
This is exactly the video I needed. I had an idea and been too scared to put paint to plastic. Brilliant 👏
I have always wanted to do a xenomorph army. This is perfect.
"In Space, no one can hear you pray to the Emperor!"
How do you make a Tyranids even more terrifying? Give it a Xenomorph paint scheme. Brilliant!
Nice, I’ve been sitting on the Space Hulk genestealers for ages with no idea how to do them. This scheme is just perfect for them
LETS ROCK!
Just wanted to stop by and offer my sincere thanks as a brand-new mini painter! Everyone talks about thinning your paints, but you're the first i've seen that shows ideal consistencies. It's helped me out so much and i've now identified that everything i've done is faaar too thickly applied! Bleh.
This is such a neat idea.
This was very helpful and the model looks great! I can this technique would look good on any black armor. Thanks for sharing this.
Very nice! Really like the video and the quotes from the aliens
I feel like youd like the minis from another glorious day in the corps.
Might use this for those I have to paint!
this is the best xeno paint job ive ever seen!
i didnt think a good paint scheme was possible. duncan did it again.
Now I have to start a tyranid army :D. Thanks for the video!!
This was sooooo cool Duncan! I have been painting my Tyranids like Xenos for years but not like this! I decided to use purple as the carapace color and a bright plasma green for the weapons and maws. this gives me great ideas for changing up the scheme a bit. Thanks again for all that you do, cant wait to get my grubby American hands on your paint when its available!
This Termagant and it's brood will make a great representation of the Parasite of Mortrex.
God damn i love this. Absolutely perfect model
Classic and totally awesome! "The sarge is still alive, man. His vitals are real low but he's alive!" "You can't save them, thy are being cocooned just like the others." Thanks for sharing.
"painted mostly black. Mostly." Well done, sir.
This is great! Got the Aliens boardgame and it's expansions recently and was wasn't sure how to paint the aliens. This is a big help
Oh this is awesome, I’ve always wanted to paint a xenomorph!
I know I'm late to the party but man, this was what I've been looking for! Spot on mate!
Ahh awesome job! The Aliens films (or the first 2 anyway) are amazing and it makes complete sense to carry the aesthetic over to 40k on a 'Nid. Now all we need is some Guards painted like Marines (and a deck of cards.)
"They are mostly black... Mostly"! Love those little references to a movie. ;)
Awesome. Now just paint 59 more and you'll be all set! :)
"This is black, mostly." 🤣 smooth as the paint job!
Love this scheme.
This is an amazing paint scheme…
Thanks Duncan!
I love the drool effect, might steal that for my own bugs.
Lol man I love the fact that we can tell you have seen Aliens far to many times.
My cousin phoned me asking for advice last week about how to paint Tyranids as Xenomorphs. The timing of this is unbelievable. Thanks guys!
Perfect!
Excellent technique!
Thank you so much for this Duncan... This is Very similar (In terms of the darkness not wholly in terms of the colours) to what I had in mind for my Tyranid Kill team I am working on but at present I had only primed the models black. so this is a great resource for me :) I'm excited to get time to paint them.
As a big fan of the first 2 alien Movies, I have to say that your work is awesome, super🤘🤘... Mr patton would say.... game over man😁
loved the video, Duncan!! really enjoyed that you used Citadel as well as your own line of paints!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The puns were absolutely fantastic.
I usually paint Space Marines but it’s always fascinating to see tutorials for other factions.
Brilliant and lost count how many times you gave a nod the Aliens 😂😂
hey Duncan, you just made my day.... as an old (really old) lover of the ALIEN-Movies, (Aliens just running now), I always played with the idea of an Aliens-themed tyranid army... that "fire" was restoked, with the anouncment of the Leviathan-Box....
Let's pray, I can get the hands on a box... cursed be all the scalpers... Nids for me, Marines for my son!
Greetings from grimwarden
Love it!
I was just discussing this at my local game store this week, on how I wanted to paint my Nids like this! Thank you!
I’ve been thinking of a good way to do this for some time. Glad a much better painter than me did it first
Looks great! I like the glassine teeth effect, will definitely use something similar to my Jormungandr fleet!
Glad you like it!
