    I can’t justify buying a book right now since I’d just need to pack it up again (personally find ebooks too straining to read), so- subbed to your Patreon! I’ve never held much specific interest in xenofiction, nor many of the associated topics you’ve covered on this channel; however, your analysis and presentation are, on all occasions, insightful and engaging. It’s always great to find those rare video essayists who perform literary criticism with such *precise* consideration of their own language, and by that very trait I’m confident I’ll love the book whenever I do get around to reading it. Congratulations on getting published! I almost never leave UA-cam comments so wanted to show some appreciation :)

    I keep on questioning this -- how the /fuck/ do you not have more viewers? Even a barely-two-minute video of yours announcing that the book you wrote is for sale has higher production quality than channels that regularly draw in ten times the viewership.
    I'll buy this book whenever I'm able -- to be honest, I don't even care if I have the time to read it or not. Your long hours of content provided for free on UA-cam are enough to justify the purchase, and judging by the quality that you usually put into writing your videos, I'll enjoy it whenever I do get the chance to read it.

    @CardinalWest I posted a comment on your Reynard the Fox video some time ago and mentioned that I purchased your novel. I've been meaning to follow up because Winter Without End is truly excellent. As a writer myself, I especially applaud your prose, you not only tell a compelling story, the way you do so truly flows and matches the characters whose journey we are sharing. Well done! I HIGHLY recommend the piece and would be happy to discuss it with you. I can write a review as well, I've just been very busy. Life. Anyway, thank you for such a wonderful piece of writing. Also, I might have a connection to share, a friend of my wife does an author's podcast so, stay tuned, I'd love for you to be featured (no promises but will see!).

    Today I finished this book and...it is one of the best ones I ever read. I mean overall: the way you write, how you describe things and your ability to get into the mind of Knight and (I dont want to post spoilers for those who has not read the book) the wolf . As a sucker for xenofiction myself (Watership Down, Animals of Farthing Wood, Call of the wild, White Fang, Dogsbody and the like) this is one of the most exiting stories I ever read and it really has the same feel to it and I dreaded having to come to the last page so it would be the end of the book. Been reading my physical copy on the bus and I really longed to know how it goes. The themes and the all over harshness of wilderness and looming fear of a presumed apocalypse through the eyes of an animal. You tell exactly how much is needed so the reader can draw their own conclusions. Sometimes people over-explain and it takes you out of it: like when they put too many human-terms and it does no longer feel like you see it from the dogs perspective. There is a lot I would want to ask but I also don't want to spoil the book for anyone who is going to read it: it is too good: it must be experienced. I really hope there will be more from you like this or anything storywise really cause you clearly know what you´re doing when writing. The suspense send chills down my spine and the struggle for Knight (again I do not want to spoil this) let´s just say it is amazing! From the bottom of my heart: Thank you!

    Will definitely be picking up the ebook. Do you have a literary agent or did you go through Fenris directly?

    • @CardinalWest
      @CardinalWest  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks! And I submitted to Fenris directly, though I had spent the previous few years querying agents - I'd query 4-6 agents, wait a few months, either get rejections or just not hear back, and then do another redraft of my manuscript before trying again. I had almost signed with 2 different agents but it didn't work out, though in the end, in my case, that turned out to be for the best.
      If you're looking to get published with a large publisher you'll probably need an agent, but plenty of smaller to mid-sized publishers accept submissions directly from authors.

    This sounds like a good book to read! I'm just curious, but what was your writing process for the book? I am an aspiring writer and I would really love to hear any advice you'd have about writing and completing a book. I really love your channel too and hope that it gets more views and followers as time goes on.

    • @CardinalWest
      @CardinalWest  2 роки тому +10

      Thanks! Initially, I was really inspired by Richard Adam's book "The Plague Dogs," and wanted to write a story like it. I would just brainstorm ideas in my free time (walking to classes, while running/exercising, making meals if no one else was around, etc.) and came up with several different concepts for stories. Eventually I ended up having an idea for a post-apocalyptic story told from a dog's perspective, because dogs feature as sidekicks in lots of those stories but I hadn't ever seen one as the main character before (though I later found out I'm not the first to write one lol).
      From there, I looked through the different rough story concepts I had and combined two of them (which apparently is how a lot of authors come up with book ideas - they have two or three concepts that aren't enough on their own, so they merge them together). Once I had a concept for a full story that I was confident was distinctive enough, I started outlining the plot and character development, and considering the overall themes. (This step is where you would also want to research your subject matter if that is applicable.)
      Once the outline was complete, I wrote the first draft chapter by chapter until I had a full manuscript, went back through for a quick typo, grammar, and continuity check, and waited a few months before my first full redraft. When redrafting, you want to improve your prose as much as possible, take out anything that doesn't seem necessary, and make any changes or additions.
      I worked on this novel on and off for several years, going back through and redrafting it once every 4-8 months, so I probably did the whole redrafting process a total of 12 times (maybe more), but most authors generally recommend 3 or so redrafts. Ultimately, it's up to you to judge when you think your novel is "ready."
      After that, you can start querying literary agents, or just submitting to publishers directly. An agent is probably necessary for signing with a big publisher, but smaller to mid-sized publishers often accept submissions directly from authors. I queried over 80 agents, and almost signed with 2 of them, over the course of around 5 years, but in the end I submitted directly to Fenris and was accepted.
      And if you end up querying lots of agents or publishers but not hearing back or getting rejected, it's worth considering doing another round or two of redrafting, especially if you are writing regularly - you'd be surprised by how much you can improve your prose in the course of a year or so, so you may look at your manuscript that you wrote a year earlier and want to rewrite it all over again. For instance, when I wrote the first draft of Winter Without End, my prose was pretty mediocre (not that I knew it at the time), and every redraft improved it a little bit more, until the point where now, when I look at the first and final drafts, it almost looks like a different person wrote them.
      The biggest thing here is don't worry if your writing isn't all that good in your first draft - that's completely natural, and it is much easier to improve something you've already when you come back to it later.
      I hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, and good luck with your own writing!
