This Easter, 52 talented young musicians from Hong Kong came all the way to perform in Vienna and Salzburg.
Through the Austrian-Chinese Profound Arts Festival (ACPAF) organized by
Österreichischer und Chinesischer Förderverein für Musikerziehung und Kulturaustausch, the School Orchestra and Choir of St. Joseph's Primary School in Hong Kong were invited to participate in three performances in Austria. Under the leadership and guidance of Maestro Felix Mak, orchestra conductor, Ms. Poon, head of the music panel, as well as three music teachers and four parent volunteers, 52 young musicians arrived at the Vienna International Airport on March 21 and started their seven-day performance tour.
St. Joseph's Primary School is one of the most famous primary schools in Hong Kong. The orchestra consists of 52 members aged 8 to 12, and has extensive experience in participating in difference performances and competitions. It has been trained by Maestro Felix Mak, who is also the professional music advisor of Österreichischer und Chinesischer Förderverein für Musikerziehung und Kulturaustausch.
During their seven-day performance tour under ACPAF this year, the orchestra and choir of St. Joseph’s Primary School were first invited to perform at the United Nations International Building in Vienna, then at the Katholische Kirche Kalvarienbergkirche in Vienna, and finally to perform with St. Georgen Youth Orchestra in Salzburg.
To let the Austrian audience has a taste of the oriental culture, Maestro Felix Mak has rearranged some pieces by combining Hong Kong's music culture with classical music elements. One of the most impressive ones is "This is Our Home", which was a famous Canton pop composed by Mr Joseph Koo with lyrics written by Mr James Wong. Maestro Felix Mak rearranged the song for performance by the orchestra. The orchestra of St. Joseph’s Primary School also performed a Chinese song, “Year of the Dragon”, together with St. Georgen Youth Orchestra on the stage. These special arrangements and performances were well received by the audience and have brought the cultural exchange between Austria and China to another level.
This year, the committee of ACPAF selected Henry Ray-Smith to be the ACPAF 2024 music ambassador, and Rayan Das to be the star of the year. The organizer of the ACPAF invited the former mayor of Salzburg, Dr. Heinz Schaden, to grace the medal award ceremony. The mayor of St. Georgen Bei Salzburg, Mr. Franz Gangl, the deputy mayor, Ms. Petra Gillhofer, and the person in charge of the China Office of the Salzburg State Government in Austria, Mrs. Jenny Schaden, also attended the event to show their support.
