First time watching your videos. I think this is awesome and brave of you. I like that you were smart and didn't push yourself until you got hurt. I'm sure the original person who did this, didn't get it in a few hours or even the first day. Good luck. 👍
once you figure out the back hip circle, it clicks. definitely easier from a handstand, just try to bend your body in half so your legs are going over the beam by the time your chest is under the beam. nice work so far! you got this!
This is seriously sooo helpful. It’s hard to find tips on these old skills bc coaches don’t teach them anymore! I really appreciate this, it motivates me to get back in the gym and try some more!! Thanks!
You are a beast! I love how you are able to watch videos and then practice just a bit and execute them! Can’t wait to see an update on this one! You look amazing!
Sophia!!! Holy moly you are so brave and talented!!! You motivate me so so much to continue in gymnastics! 2:34 was so cute when you said “yASs” love you!
Its a bit late, but something I noticed is that Natalia had more room to work with. She swung her legs out quite a bit which gave her momentum to get around, and had more room underneath to continue the momentum (she let go of the top of the beam by the time she was upside down lol). So, while scary to think about, if you did it on an isolated beam that was also higher up (or no pads on the ground...but thats probably not a good idea lol), that could help make it work. Excellent job regardless :D
It's called "Death Loop"? Seriously? That's some serious 'guy energy' to hear, "Death Loop" and think... "Cool. I could totally do that!" 30X years ago I did a spontaneous backflip... In the bush... while shooting paintballs at guys who were shooting paintballs at me. It was my first backflip. My last backflip. And having totally survived uninjured... the best possible backflip I could ever do. It was NOTHING! I didn't set out to do a backflip. Didn't have the pressure of having someone filming me to immortalize for all time the failure or success of my backflip. All I had was the: "Whoa!... Did that dude just backflip while shooting at us!!???" To spur me on to for all you know, fictional greatness. This is fifth level awesome!
I used to do these for fun, during goof off gym time. The momentum of the back handspring is what makes the back hip circle work. Just gotta go for it. Good luck 🍀
Start with handstand to clear hip on bars - that’s more what you’re going for. Think clear hip, not hip circle. (Yes, I trained these a looooong time ago, and my coach said to think of it more as a clear hip.) You don’t want to bang your hips into the bar, it stops your momentum around. Do more of a clear hip around using your arms to guide you around the beam. As you come around to toes pointing to the ceiling, switch your arm grip while piking down slightly. So handstand to clear hip on bars to get the mind right, then the SAME move on the beam. Don’t think, just go handstand to clear hip. You got this!!
And you can put 2 foam blocks between your hips and your leo (under your leo) to get the pain of hitting your hips out of your head. That’s stopping you from coming in with the speed you need.
I tried to do this back in the 80s after seeing Natalia Yurchenko do this in real life. I got the flick bit perfect... but then burnt my wrists & forearms SO badly on the loop, cos I tried to circle like it was a bar 🤦♀
Natalia was like 1.55m height. Seems that you are taller then her. Different kinetics, different center of gravity, different weight. Everything matters
*Yurchenko was never an Olympian because the Soviet boycott. Props for attempting to train the actual loop which the few that have competed it tend to leave out.
Would you not allow the motion/energy from the first element to push you through the back hip circle? Think you got to not hold back and commit to following through the 2nd element without hesitation. As Kylo Ren says "You keep.. holding on!... Let go!". Easier said than done, mate😂
The part when she was trying to practice flipping on the beam it looks painful for the one that she’s like smacks like her stomach like right on the beam but I understand how painful it is because I’m a gymnast myself, so yeah and it is painful not gonna lie, but it’s something that you can handle withonce you get used to it, you’re not gonna care no more cause like you already know how it feels so yeah
Yikes, I know this was a year ago, but that move does not seem worth learning on the beam 😬 I admire your determination, though, and am glad you were okay after that practice session
I think you got enough b*lls ma'am, lol. So after watching the original, I noticed that she's completely horizontal with her hips on the beam when her hands touch down. She's also about a foot high off the beam which gives her enough momentum for her back-hip circle. When you do it, you have more of your upper torso above the beam as opposed to lower torso, and you're about half her distance off the beam instead. So I guess once you undercut that BH-spring get your hips horizontal about 1 foot above the beam, and once your legs come down make sure your hips start hugging around the side of the beam where you start your BH-circle. And notice that she doesn't exactly complete the BH-circle... her hips just plop on top of the beam like she did a 3/4 BHC. Hope that helps. Keep up the amazingnessss

Suggestion: Don't try to hit the beam with your hips - connect first with your stomach. A beam ist wider than a bar!
