Can someone explain to me why this child was using Pythagorean theorem to solve for area? I'm not so sure about calling him a child "genius". If anything he made the problem way more complicated then it needed to be. You don't need to label angles, you just solve for the area of two separate triangles by multiplying the two bases and divided by two and then add them up.
Another question why is the child the one getting a bad ending? The others are the ones that are agreeing on paying money to get good grades not him, and he needs to do the year again when he did more work than anyone else

To prove that a triangle is right you can check if the Pythagorean theorem works on it. If it does then the triangle is right. So what he did is he realised that the hypotenuse of the first triangle would also be the hypotenuse of the second triangle (if the second one is right) he calculated it to be 450 and then did reverse Pythagorean theorem(instead of knowing that it’s right to finding hypotenuse, using hypotenuse to find out if it’s right) by doing that the answer on the second triangle also was 450 which proved that both triangles are right. Now he did (base x height) divided by two for both triangles (which when talking about a right triangle is opposite x adjacent side divided by 2) and added the outcomes together to find the area. I realised that my explanation is a bit long but long story short you can use the Pythagorean theorem to prove that a triangle is right and that is exactly what he did.
He got the question wrong, if a quadrilateral is split diagonally and if you get two right angled triangles then it's a rectangle in which case you can just multiply the length with the breadth to get the area
