I understand what you mean. The one aspect of Christianity that excited me as a child, was the idea that even though so many discoveries would be made and questions answered long after I was gone, I’d still get to watch from heaven. It’s hard to grapple with feeling like we don’t have enough to learn everything.

For that; I will be the best student that I can and I will always make sure that the knowledge that I pass on to others, is the most correct to what I understand at that time to be and to encourage everyone to do the same.

NOT knowing is so much fun, because you can learn.
Accepting nothing in the universe is perfect, and that means that there is the potential to make things BETTER, that this is something POSITIVE, is what many christians go not get.
While it is in their Bible... "We are all sinners" literally means we are imperfect, and we should not try to be God, means we should not think we can ever be as perfect as God.
And divine perfection is nothing positive - something perfect can never change, or it would not have been perfect. But life is change, constant change. Perfection is dead.
But these fundamentalist christian think once they are saved, they have committed themselves to God, God's perfection rubs off onto them, God's perfect word makes them RIGHT in everything. They do not have to know WHAT it is, do not have to know anything about anything, but they OWN the truth, morality, logic, meaning of life. That feeling is enough for them
That feeling is tempting. Will a woman who is told she is beautiful ask "tell me how it can be that the wrinkles on my stretched elbow indicating I am over 40 are beautiful" and want to find out every detail? We all have areas where we dig not too deep.
But we have our nerdy areas where we delight in finding out, knowing a little more, finding structures in seeming chaos, and so on.

I have the impression that the US has myths that are considered as essential for the US identity that nurture the willingness to be incurious.
The standard hero pattern is one who acts on his gut feeling, that is always right, while the institutions and laws are notoriously too weak, too stupid, the laws are dysfunctional.
So it is the lone wolf hero that takes his .45 and blows the brains out of the evil villain's head in total self-justice - and gets away with it and gets the girl.
Goes along with the myth of frontier mentality, you are out there alone, no one can help you.
A real hero is persuaded he is right, does not question himself, allows no challenges of his convictionb, and does not change his mind. And is right.
The standard Hollywood script has no time for that. With diminishing education the plots must become simpler. No room for thought, mere entertainment for 2 hours that can be discarded immediately, have, (aalmost) no relevance for everyday life - until people start to lose the distinction between reality and fiction.
And that happens in parallel - reality TV almost looks as everyday life, but is completely scripted. The documentary channels appear to provide factual information, but to fill the time, all kinds of flashy conspiracy nonsense is intermingled, that is more entertaining, more interesting, better produced than nerdy facts, and there is no warning given, it is presented as if it is of the same quality as what the Forrest and Eriika say.
Should you have read this far, am I totally wrong that there is a huge complex system with many interacting parameters, way more far-fetched than one might think?
I do not think there is a grand conspiracy, it is simply stuff that evolved in a certain direction. And now is in danger of running away, getting out of control, running into a self-destructive dead end of societal evolution.

@@feedingravens you blunder on and it seems like you're typing to hear the clickity clack. What do you mean not knowing is fun. If you had any type of science class this should be familiar and not start from "nothing." The quest for knowledge is the fun thing, when you find it, that is.
I don't get what you're saying when you say make things better. Or positive. These terms are to open to interpretation. You shouldn't bash the christians for being ignorant and tricked. Definitely don't come to an atheist venue and do that. We aren't them and we don't hate them. We laugh at them sure but, your attitude toward them reads as if you think you're better than them but starts with "not knowing is so fun?" Be a christian if you want to belittle someone, they have a whole book of rules you can yell at people and try to control. Even some misogyny to exhibit just at your leisure.
Back to the point, atheist doesn't mean ass hole. It's no reason to think you're better than others.

@@whatabouttheearth Both of those states are in the South. It really comes through in their atheist activism, especially Seth and Forrest. It's so much worse here than in the Midwest. Believe me . I've lived in both the Midwest and the South.
Oklahoma is in the bottom 5 states in quality of education, and you can't turn around without seeing another news story about some ridiculous, bigoted piece of legislation put forth by one of our uneducated, ultra religious state representatives. Arkansas is almost as bad. We are among the top 5 in the ratio of churches per person. Forrest is extremely brave, putting forth his scientific and anti-religious views. I don't know for sure, but it's quite likely that he has received threats of violence stemming from them. I know Seth has.
My point is that this is an important part of what I see in them and why I like them so much. They make me happy to watch because they are both so happy in what they do despite the negative attitudes towards what the do that so many of the people where they came from possess. I know because I face it everyday myself.
Sorry I jumped on you like this. I don't want you to feel attacked. It's just that it's so exciting to watch such wonderful ideas come from people whose struggle is fully made worse by those around them.
Also, Seth and Forrest are actually from different places. This important because it makes a difference in their environments. Seth is from Tulsa, which is a big city where some small pockets of liberalism do exist. Forrest is from a small town outside of Tulsa where they definitely don't.

Oklahoma and the Ozarks aren't really the south. I live in the Ozarks, it's not the south, although it has some elements that are simmilar to the south. Tulsa especially isn't the south and Fayetteville Arkansas where GG went to school and where her husband is from, and where his business is, is in a pocket of north west Arkansas that's a bit different than the rest of Arkansas with places like Eureka Springs, it's a very rainbow flag liberal place.

Ok, I’m 70 years old and am in excellent health. At 12 minutes in, I’m challenged to go for a PhD. I could have done so once, but my newborn son’s needs argued otherwise. Now that he and his siblings are successful, why not?
I won’t, but only because I have focused my interests in other directions. But the desire to contribute remains!

I absolutely _loved_ listening to the two of them break down, "You're a..." layer-by-layer; I even laughed out loud (literally) several times because I was enjoying it so much.
Irreducible Complexity: "You can't just start yanking blocks out of the pyramids and still have them remain structurally sound." True, but you can remove blocks, one by one, from the top _downward_ and still have a functional _building_ well into the deconstruction project. For that matter, a car without an engine can still be a carriage, a wagon, a greenhouse...
As for Intelligent Design in general, it arrogantly presents Man as the apex of _creation,_ utterly ignoring the fact that...for _any_ of the primary senses...human are _not_ the _best_ examples.
Thank you so much for this video. Having two of my favorite UA-cam science educators in the same conversation _with you_ has been a truly joyful experience!
