      Graf Spee is considered to be an Armored Cruiser in Germany. They were Panzerschiff which use the words from Panzer (Armor) and Schiff (Ship). An Armored Ship as her terms. Which if you look at many Naval Histories, they do have this categorization of it. A Cruiser that has armor to fight other cruisers, a Gen 0 Battlecruiser you should say. Armored Cruisers. Which means, Graf Spee is infact an Armored Cruiser and not considered Pocket Battleship. Which Illinois also falls into this perfectly as well.

    If you play a ship long enough and often enough, you become aware of exactly how much lead you need to have to hit the target at different ranges. So, I would think it's safe to say he's played Illinois often enough to be able to aim very very well at range

    Illinois is technically should be considered Armored Cruiser than a Battleship or Battlecruiser. Because she have an armor that’s way thicker than any Cruisers but still using Cruiser Guns. Which makes me thinking why this thing is considered as a Battleship in WeeGee eyes. Battleship should have big guns atleast >300mm guns. But these guns were 203s which isn’t considered a Battleship Gun Standards. This ship has smaller main guns than a Pre Dreadnought Battleships. So it should be considered an Armored Cruiser.
    It also doesn’t have the fact that it use Iowa Hull which in my eyes were the perfect Battlecruiser compared to Montana Class. Standard Battleship at the time during WWII were around 28 knots. Which means, NC and SD does have 28 knots speed, so as Monty. Iowa on the other hand have 34 knots. Which exceed regular Fast Battleships. Because her sole design is to chase down Kongo Class. Which technically due to her armor being not design to stand her own shells. Plus the fact that she has lesser guns than Montana. Making her technically a Battlecruiser. Which proves more point on Illinois as that thing only have 203 which if you makes her being an Armored Cruiser, Bigger gun on it making Iowa a Battlecruiser.

      What an interesting take you have!
      I was confused initially as I read “Armored Cruiser” but thought “Protected Cruiser”. I am curious if tonnage would factor into this, but I like the concept, and also can see how Iowa fits Battlecruiser when considering the Montanas.

    • @tsuaririndoku
      @tsuaririndoku 5 днів тому

      @@xPureNRG007x Technically Iowa can still be Considered a Battlecruiser if you compare to the older ships like North Carolina or South Dakota. I just place Hood in this perspective comparison with Queen Elizabeth Class. Hood and Queen Elizabeth Class never sacrifice in both armor or guns. Which makes Hood also able to be called Fast Battleships. Yes, Hood armor was slightly thinner but her armor schemes were more angled compared to Queen herself. Which technically have identical armor effectiveness. Hood is basically Queen buy faster. Which fits Iowa pretty well considering how Iowa have armor structure of angled main belt like Hood does. Compare to her previous class like NC or South Dakota. It is a take where I think it’s okay to call Iowa a Battlecruiser or Fast Battleships.
      Battlecruisers does splits into Generations. First Gen Battlecruisers are more of a Cruiser with large caliber guns. Invincible class were great example of this. Fast ship with Cruiser like armor while having the gun of either slightly larger than a cruiser or same caliber as Battleships. Which technically, First Gen Battlecruiser were more like cruiser killers than a Battleship. You can see the first Gen Battlecruiser applies to Alaska class as well. Alaska class were built with a purpose of dealing with Japanese Heavy Cruisers of Myoko, Mogami and Takao class. Which is technically make Alaska Class are considered Cruiser Killer. Which in case, Battlecruiser.
      Iowa with applied with Montana Perspective, were more on Gen 2 Battlecruisers. These Battlecruisers were designed to fight other Battlecruisers and in same case, Battleships. But with sacrifice of a Main Battery. Iowa fits into this perfectly.
      However, if we look at Hood. She have 4 gun turrets compare to her capital ships at the time, Queen Elizabeth also housing 4 gun turrets. Which makes Hood be technically a 3rd Gen Battlecruisers.
      There’s a 4th Gen Battlecruisers which technically closer to the word Fast Battleships. Amagi, Lexington and G3 design. All of these 3 are the 4th Generation of Battlecruisers. Where they were more like Battleships than Cruisers at this point. Amagi have more guns than Nagato. Lexy literally in between and G3 is basically Faster Nelson. Iowa does also technically falls into this as well.

      Wrong, Illinois is, was, and always will be a "Anti-Aircraft Battleship". This is why it was given Des Moines' guns which were supposed to come with an anti-air proxy shell which development stopped for after the US Navy decided heavy AA will be maxed out at 6"/152mm

    • @tsuaririndoku
      @tsuaririndoku День тому

      @@CH3TN1K313 So why is it call Anti Aircraft Battleship. If the ship is classified as doesnt even Battle a ship? The term Armored AA Cruiser is much more suiting. Why does it has to be called Anti Aircraft Battleship? Because it is Iowa Class? Then why does M10 is not considered Medium Tank. Considering it is basically M4 chassis. This is also doesn’t make any sense on Alaska as well. Large Cruiser. What this thing defines as Large Cruiser? Cruiser that’s huge? Or Cruiser with large gun caliber. Then what is Invincible Class is then? She is a cruiser with large guns. But they use the term Battlecruiser because it is design to Battle a cruiser. If Anti Aircraft Battleship is a thing. Then how does 203mm gun able to fight Battleships?
      So why I think Armored AA Cruiser is more suitable. Because. 1) Illinois has Cruiser speed. 2) Illinois does have well protected armor. 3) She use her main gun as an AA Dual Purpose. Which means, Armored AA Cruiser is more suitable class. This also makes Atlanta make more sense. They calling her a Light AA Cruiser. Because, Atlanta are Light Cruiser with AA guns. She still perform like a Light Cruiser, but also performs AA roles. Illinois can’t do Battleship Role. Unless you count WeeGee HP Drain BS.

    Illinois, Captain Bull Halsey, Arms Race mode.... Yup que the BRRRRT!
    "Citadeling a Roon at 20kms" I mean, the shells are going straight DOWN at that point. So penning the Top Deck straight into the turtle backed citadel makes sense. Still with how SLOW the shells are I too am surprised they managed to dig that deep too. (Guess Muzzle Velocity doesn't really matter after all)

  • @CH3TN1K313
    @CH3TN1K313 День тому

    Illinois is a "Anti-Aircraft Battleship". Not a cruiser, not a battlecruiser, not an "armored cruiser". They decided to use the Des Moines' guns due to their RoF and that an anti-air proxy shell was being developed for them during WW2 until the USN decided to go with 6"/152mm as their large caliber AA guns and would be dedicated AA ships using them, such as the AA Cruiser Worcester.
