His fingers could still get pinched grabbing the handles and he had zero chance at stopping the sled. The people who design these courses (or atleast this course) get a 1/10 in my books. The first thing I would think to do if I were designing a bobsled track would be a huge run off area in case the breaks on the sled fail. This is called a fail-safe.

With a bad start like they had with not being able to get in the sled and the inability to properly steer at a high speed around bends results in a speed decrease. Not to mention a potentially fatal crash at the end (which thankfully didn't happen). If you watched the video you would have noticed they were almost 2 seconds behind on time. You may think you just push the sled and make it to the end with no work/skill/effort needed, but, they are much like a race car with how a driver plays a big role in the fate of the race.
