- Well-known gaelic games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has died in hospital at the age of 93.
Mr Ó Muircheartaigh was born in Dún Síon just outside Daingean Uí Chúis (Dingle), Co Kerry, in 1930 and worked as a teacher.
His first assignment for RTÉ was to provide an all-Irish commentary on the 1949 Railway Cup Final on St Patrick's Day.
He continued teaching up until the mid-1980s when he became a full-time broadcaster with RTÉ.
Mr Ó Muircheartaigh took over as RTÉ Radio 1's premier radio commentator when Míchael O'Hehir retired from broadcasting in 1985.
His last All-Ireland final came in 2010, when he commentated on Cork's win over Down in the football decider, and he retired from broadcasting in October of that year.
Speaking in 2010 ahead of his retirement, he said his work "enabled me to meet and get to know generations of great sportsmen and women and many of those associated with them".
"It was an honour for me to be at the source of this wonderful entertainment, to be part of a continuous and successful venture," he said.
He died this morning in the Mater Hospital, Dublin.
Michael 'o hehir agus Michael o' muircheartaigh..... simply the best, the two of them will have great stories to regale over....rip.
Very rarely a Country is in mourning but today Ireland is. RIP.

Nobody like him since. Will never be another like him. RIP to a legend
Micheal o muearthirtigh met michael o heir. Two of the greatest sports broadcasters Ireland ever produced. Micheal o Muearithirtigh took over from Micheal o heirs stroke. O hehir was very knowledgeable when it gaa and horse racing. When my late mom and i were coming back from mass in her car we would listen to o muearthirtigh reporting on a gas match and it was like being at the game, he really pulled you. All that followed him on radio were pail imitation
I have to disagree with your use of the word legend there as legend doesn't even begin to describe him
Immortal
"In injury time now, what happens next is up to the referee and God, Pat Horan is the referee, God is God"
RIP to a broadcasting legend the nation will never see the likes of again.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam! Had the pleasure of interviewing this man for my college radio. An absolute gent who had time for all ages. Loved a chat.
The man epitomised the GAA. I know he belonged to County Kerry but every county loved him. We are poorer without him. RIP.
Ahh No, Rip, absolutely gutted, a bit of Ireland just died.
What a loss to sport, broadcasting, the GAA, and indeed, the whole Ireland. It simply won't be the same listening anymore without him there.
I'm a grizzled 53 year old builder but I don't mind admitting that I shed a tear today, I guess Micheal's passing somehow closes the book on the halcyon days of my youth when I hung on his every wonderful turn of phrase.
A wonderful gentle man, may you rest in peace.
You sound like the person who texted the radio show saying they had to pull over because they heard Gay Byrne died and they were crying
@@derekdempsey8506 Ahh Derek, you’re a true internet hard man, congratulations

What a man. Unmistakable voice when commentating on the matches. And the knowledge Micheal had, was just fascinating. A pure and utter gentleman. May he rest in eternal peace. Condolences to his family and friends !!! 🙏🙏🙏
A true poet that could paint a picture in your mind through the awesome power of his words.
Had the privilege of speaking to him on a school tour to Croke Park back in the day. He spoke to us at length, even took us on a little tour of the ground, telling stories of the players that once walked on the hallowed turf.
We were young, but awestruck. An absolute gentleman and a great Irishman. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
An absolute legend.A gentleman. The voice of the GAA.He showed up at my dad's removal and knew us all by name.I asked my late mother why was he there. He married my cousin,my uncle's daughter.Which I never knew

That quote at the very end was brilliant and very fitting. Rest in Peace
Oh no! How did I miss that?!
It’s lovely to see at 0:51 that people drove their cars with the colours of their county on the windows. Crazy to see how old some traditions are.
Sad news, he was a wizard with words, great knowledge, a true Gael. 😔😔🙏
