I made a dedicated video for you on how you can select the capacitor size to correct the power factor 👇👇
ua-cam.com/video/1cNeia9D5Fk/v-deo.html
Fake news, are you an electrical engineer?
False video don't believe. Power bill won't effect by using capacitor. Please share only truth.
Then what is power factor?
Capacitor value??
What is the value of the right capacitor?
You are using the same power with improved power factor to calculate current, and then again, you are calculating the power using the calculated current. In this, you will get the same power.
Energy meter calculates the power consumption of active power. Theorically, the capacitance load will deal with reactive power. Therefore, there will not be any noticeable change in meeter reading. But improving the power factor will help to reduce the current in the line. This is good for the supplier as the voltage drop will be reduced in the supplying line.
Does it mean that applying capacitor across the line is good and advisable? And it can reduse bill.
Now you are getting to the point!
@@vmanstudios imho - no, it's a flawed method of deployment in that use case scenario. a parallel capacitor should only be deployed to inductive loads only. that's only a few things (dryer, washer, dishwasher, range hood, ceiling fans, garbage disposal, vacuum cleaner, fridge and central ac). you can't leave the caps on when the load is not on - if you do then you're just wasting electricity. and forget about everything else for caps - lights, toaster, keurig, microwave - those are all resistive loads. it's literally STUPID to think or calculate what cap is needed for an entire house. the point he's not making is that EXISTING capacitors are typically installed with the startup (inrush) current needed to get the inductive loads going and that each power factor's device can (probably) be improved with the addition of ANOTHER capacitor that brings the power factor of the device closer to 1.0 - but again the bigger the load the bigger the savings and the smaller the load the smaller the savings - and you have to make sure the cap is on ONLY WHEN THE INDUCTIVE LOAD IS ON - here's a better video showing it ua-cam.com/video/TPqXNLkJTJM/v-deo.html - he buys an $18 cap - after years he will start to realize an roi - and this is what most people bitch about "roi" lol - but if everybody was off grid in the middle of montana - those guys would be in the dark anyway lol - anyway - hope this helps you out man - too many ppl don't explain it well enough - again imho
Depends on the area. I use a UPS and it scans the spikes. Got it bc of the ruined Electronics. My power was spiking 200 and was down to 90.. not a steady 120. So I am paying for the 200 but using only 120 . A Capacitor acting as a Reservoir. So I get a steady 120. PROTECTING MY DEVICES .The UPS also is a back up to let my pc shut down in a full blackout. BUT it saves electricity from those 200 spikes thar hit ever 10 seconds and last about 3 seconds. So I am not waistng the surges but saving then for the dims. That hit every 30 seconds and last about 2 seconds and ether surg or dim can ruin equipment. But I noticed my entire electricity bill went down since using the unit and found out it was cleaning the power to a lesser degree for the entire house not just my labtop unlike a regular surg protector that only stops surges not cleans them with Capacitor. It's primarily designed as a backup for laptop. But it's also cleaning my house house of dirty power. So what I am saying is Normally I would be paying for the 180 sudge but only using 120. This Reduces the Problem. My power grids a EXSTREAM example with is why I Got the UPS. But it saves about 15 bollars a month on my eletric bill.
Remember that each device should be power factor corrected with its own capacitor. Because things are switched on and off in a home. Your refrigirator, tv, bulbs, etc. either switch on and off by themselves or you switch them on and off. Connecting just one big cap into your supply, the cap will draw current when you switch off most of your inductive loads and then waste electricity for you, and save for the municipality.
Quite true.
False video
@@teluguelectrotechbysivakum2283 Maybe not 100% accurate video, but it is very true. Google power factor correction to see for yourself. Most electric equipment with motor has capacitor inside to improve power factor(PF). Drills, blenders, etc. Lawnmower has cap next to motor, called starting cap, but I think it also does PF correction. On big motors you get starting and running caps, the running cap is for PF correction.
Well explained! This should help break the MYTH most video watchers believe to be true. 🙏
Capacity of capacitor ?
Its a very valuable explanation for those who are blindly ticktoky. your explanation is perfect.great.
By 7 minutes into this video he correctly says there is NO savings using a capacitor for Home electricity, so those devices are a scam. . . . Factories are a different thing though.
The main reason for a low power factor incurring penalties is because the distribution network has to carry a higher current and thus there are higher heating losses in those cables/ transformers etc. Also, the cables have to be rated for the extra current.
That reasoning is wrong.
@@eddietee6305 I would be happy to hear your reasoning.
@@sanjyuu2298 sorry, I meant to say KVA instead of KVARs. Sorry. Commercials buildings are billed for KVAh and not KWH.
Domestic homes are only billed KHW.

@@sanjyuu2298 ure welcome.
It's called phase-shifting it works on AC motors to help motor run more efficiently.
Superb way of explaining how a capacitor improves POWER Factor and there by improving the Life of the electricity consuming Gadgets like AC , Fan , TV Refrigerator, washing machine etc -
Anyways, these are very important things to remember:
1. Lower power factor means waste of electric energy (money). Therefore, improving PF is always a good idea for everybody.
2. The residential power meters just disregard PF in houses. That is by design. The electricity company bears the cost of waste on behalf of their customers.
3. The power meters in industries do care about the PF. Therefore, the industries usually must pay even for wasted power due to poor PF.
Keep in mind PF correction is still a good idea.
Excellent explanation. In market more devices they are selling in the name of reducing electricity bill which has only capacitor inside. You clearly explained that connecting a capacitor across the power supply will not reduce the bill but at the same time will increase the life and efficiency of our house hold appliances which can reduce the maintenance cost of our home appliances in the long run which infact save our money. Thanks once again. UA-cam videos are boons nowadays can easily understand any kind of equipment even without basic knowledge also. Little interest only needs to learn about things.
Are you trying to say our money will be safe if we add the capacitor across to line.
There is no reason to connect a capacitor across the line. We pay for kilowatts, not kilovars (kilo volt-amps reactive). It will not have any effect on the life of appliances; the one factor that will improve the life of your motor operated appliances (air conditioners in particular) is adequate line voltage. Low voltage heats the motor up more than we might think.
(Retired after 34 years with a Fortune 100 electric utility.)
Many homes who already use large motors for devices or air conditioning already have some of these in use in the house active circuit. Imagining an AC Capacitor as an energy saver defies the logic and centuries of use of these devices, if anything they are can be a drag on the system and waste electricity needlessly. But what do I know, I'm only an electrical engineer and educator.
If you dont know about phase angle, plus optimizing voltage and current during the same phase angle then you dont know what your talking about
Go back to that university and ask for your school fees, phase angle is at play... though we are not saving much , but we r saving...
You say your a electrical teacher, have you heard about motionless electromagnetic generation... There is almost 33 different concepts based on the same fundamental idea of extracting energy from a magnet
Does NOT save money for the consumer like us ONLY for the power supplier. So yes, will NOT lower our power bills. The engr. and teacher is correct.
Ok so why The susbstations are usingg capacitor banks? Maximum homes are using capacitors ok.
Good explanation.very clear. Thanks from Srilanka
Good video. Well explained 👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
Very nice illustration...
Which gives clear idias about voltage, current and power factor..kwh or unit.

Mohan.(India)
Seems to me two important qualifications apply here. Firstly the power factor (PF) correction varies depending on the reactive load and that changes as motors, LED lighting and other loads are switched on and off. So the idea that the PF can be corrected by application of a single capacitor is only valid for a given load situation. Putting that aside the other unstated assumption here is that your being billed for the real power component which might be true for domestic households. Large Industrlal users are likely to be charged on total power usage (i.e. apparent power) as a way of discouraging use of high power inducticve loads (i.e. 3 phase motors etc) that do not incorporate some form of PF correction on the equipment.
You get the picture... PF causes wasted power, so domestic meters charge you for the power you waste. That's why industrial consumers face penalties.
Should have mentioned there is also a third unstated qualification - all reactive voltages and currents are sinusoidal. This may not always be the case. Some loads (linear power supplies in electrical and electronic equipment, for example ) give rise to current draw with high harmonic content which also contributes to poor PF. A ' capacitor' solution, in this case will only correct the phase relationship between the AC voltage and current and not the harmonic distortion. This is all very case dependent, but serves to highlight again the practical difficulty and limitations of using a single capacitor to correct the PF.
@@davebutler3905 Not at all. Consumer level power factor is aggregated and dealt with at the distribution level. The provider that owns the distribution level lines installs remotely operated cap banks to correct voltage levels, usually from day to night.
Domestic meters measure Watt hours, not amp hours or VARS. That may be true outside North America or outside Europe or Australia, but I would be surprised.
That's a nice explanation thanks a lot
I am skeptical about this. I am an Electrical Engineer and understand what a capacitor will do in the US. Most modern large load/motor devices already have a Start Capacitor that takes up the initial load surge. Unlike motor loads (HVAC, Well Pump, etc.), most electronic devices have such a slight surge that this won't be worth it. IMO, upgrading old non-LED lighting, fixing insulation, updating windows, and putting timers (WIFI/automated) on some items will save you a lot more money.
You didn't watch the whole video...
ONLY TRUE IF YOUR AC (Motors!) Is Unbalanced!!! (Power factor...)😮😮😢😅😊❤
Adding capacitors to individual motors helps balance the other loads in a plant that has various inductive loads. This better power in the manufacturing plant with single phase and three phase motors/uses. Does not help your electrical bill. That’s why you don’t see it used voluntarily. If you are a big enough inductive load user the power company might give you a discount for installing capicators so they don’t have to on their side of the meter.
@@doyourbest7655 (Retired from a Fortune 100 electric company.)
The electricity provider does not care much about power factor in individual residences. Large subdivisions can warrant a capacitor ("cap") bank. Extremely High Voltage substations often have capacitor banks the size of a large shed on insulator stilts.
How does updating Windows help reduce power consumption
Very Good idea thank you for your video
Remember the meter only measures the current (counts current-sec), and assumes value of the PF to be 1 and voltage to be nominal line voltage. So, if you reduce the current your bill will go down. In side a meter there is induction motor in series with your home load, more current it passes through, faster it rotates, and faster it counts.
Is that statement still true considering which side of the meter the cap is installed. ?
Good presentation.
EXcellent explaination of PF and why electrivity bill does not reduce even when pf improves.
Sounds good and explains the calculations correctly but most homes in the UK are fitted with meters that only read Kwh and therefore have no reactive component to add into the calculation. The big but is when the electricity company's switch you to smart metering as is happening here in the UK. Its another easy way to charge you for what is known as (wattless current) !
That's interesting. So if I have a poor pf at home best to stay on the old meter.
You are absolutely right. I'm wondering if the commenters were watching the video. Your home is billed wattage not VA or KVA.
It is distressing to watch TV adverts for these devices. What a swindle. I was an electrical engineer in a large factory. Our main load consisted of polyphase motors and other inductive devices. Around the factory were automatic power factor correction units utilising capacitors. This corrected the power factor......How many houses have exclusively inductive loads? Not many!
in Germany the old Ferraris meters only count the active power. The domestic digital meters as well.
Expensive measuring systems with capacitive compensation are only available for factories.
But connecting a pseudo capacitor to the grid helps the sales of Asian retailers and lighten your wallet.
Good one there!!!
Interesting in your video
Thank you. it's so embarrassing that I didn't understand this for all the years I spent in university as an Electrical Engineer until now regardless of how may long pdfs I read, they all made no sense. Thank you Sir.
Don't call yourself electrical engineer
Good work Bro
Very good sir👍#zimsangma
Three things to consider here. 1. this video assumes an "ideal" capacitor. Real world capacitors have leakage current, however small,, that will increase overall consumption. Even if by a tiny amount.
2. I used to add small capacitors to Edison bulbs whenever that socket had a history of blowing bulbs. Wherever the spike happens to come from, a capacitor will help prevent it from burning out the bulb. It may even work on modern LED lights, though they are naturally more resistant to voltage spikes. This saved me a lot of money in replacement light bulbs over the years.
3. capacitors fail over time and use. They can short out and cause a fire. Never bypass a fuse or circuit breaker with a capacitor. And never place one in a location where its failure might ignite nearby material.
Most countries like Canada and USA don’t charge for poor power factor in residential only in Industrial this is where it really matters
I got to test one of these Capacitor Banks. What the person that loaned me the device didn’t know, was what instruments I had. Assumed just a DM and Amp Clamp. Installed new Double Pole 15 Amp Breaker in Panel wired in Device. With the Breaker off Ran Major Appliances except Clothes Washer, for twenty minutes and took Watt readings. Also Dryer was run on a high heat, non-Auto dry setting. Freezer, Refrigerator and AC Ran at a slightly lower wattage, with the unit connected. Also a large belt driven floor fan Ran at a lower wattage. When I set the Clothes washer so it was heating it’s water it ran at a higher wattage. Next was the Water Heater, our biggest energy hog. It ran at a higher wattage with the Capacitor Bank Connected. Stove/Oven, Dryer Light Bulbs were all higher. Any Inductive load ran higher wattages. This would have resulted in higher electricity bills in my opinion. BTW Fluorescent Lights quieted down, and my immersible aquarium pumps lost there hum, and ran at a lower wattage. My old O Scope showed a smoother Hz Wave.
Three phase service ... pf correction for a "Demand Meter" type commercial service to a business? Yes 👍
Single phase service to a residence? Waste of money!
The point is, if you improve power factor, the current will be reduced, so the KWH will be the same [ Volt x Current ↓ x PF ↑]. But there are advantages with reduced current.
Excellent explain i ❤it
Thanku bro good & use full video
I have always thought that by using a capacitor prevents the startup load, which can be ten time the actual load. This may not have much effect on your bill but if you are off grid and run batteries then it can help the longevity of the batteries as the capacitor can release power faster
Which Capacitor value to be used...
None. This video is based on a misunderstanding of how our consumption is measured.
Thank you for the elaborate and useful explanation.
Excelentttttt Bro. Thank you very much for your explanation....
Thanks for information I ask I thing what is the value of capacitor you used for 1000w consumption.
It really interested to me to know, thanks
Most of the equipment in the house are motor-driven and already have capacitors installed. The biggest culprit is your AC unit. Over the years, the SEER value have improved from less than 4 to greater than 16 and it is mainly due to the improvement to capacitive circuitry.

Capacitors marketed as power-saving devices for reducing electricity bills are often considered fake or misleading. These devices claim to improve power factor and reduce energy consumption, but their effectiveness is questionable. Power factor correction is typically the responsibility of utility companies, and residential consumers rarely benefit from such devices. It's essential to be cautious when considering these products, as they might not provide the energy savings they promise and could be a waste of money. It's best to focus on proven energy-saving practices like using energy-efficient appliances and reducing unnecessary energy consumption.
I know a few people who used a Power saving device and it lowered their bill by $400, they had two for a 2000 sq ft home. I said add more and then let us know. so they do work you just have enough of them plugged, you cannot just plug in one and expect oh cool it works because one will not work.
@@CoverageAwarenessStudio Unless you are outside any modern area, I find that impossible to believe. Throughout North America, Europe and Australia power is metered by the watt-hour, not the volt-amps reactive.
The capacitor cannot be connected between the neutral line and the phase line, as you have shown in the diagram.
Theory is old age , demonstration with live devices makes sense
What is the value of capacitor
Is this can work resistive load for home
This is correct. The meter does not charge you for inductive or capacitive load. But these loads will cause losses in the power grid transmission lines.
Fluorescent tube lighting fixtures contain a current limiting inductor and this usually is balanced by a capacitor of appropriate size. Still, the tube would work just fine even without the capacitor.
No. Indian meters charge depending on KVA.
@@flamingo5900
This may apply to commercial but probably not to private users.
Even if it does, a single capacitor would not be of much use. Instead each inductive load would need its own phase compensation capacitor, just as is done on fluorescent tube lights.
@@VeritasPraevalebit What you say is right. Compensating capacitor should be on only when the device is on. There is no pf correction capacitor in fluorescent lamps.
@@VeritasPraevalebit In India different rules are there for different states.
The old mechanical kWh meters with a spinning disc only measured real power and could not measure apparent power.
However with the introduction of smart meters in some countries, they do have the capability to measure apparent power, and even in a residential setting. In the UK they haven't activated that capability yet.
Apparent power is rarely measured in residential properties, and most often only done in commercial/industrial properties.
One typical approach is to set a threshold for the power factor and make a charge to the industrial/commercial customer when the power factor goes below the threshold.
This generally tends to act as an incentive to the industrial customer to adopt power factor correction techniques and devices.
Too many customers with too low a power factor imposes demands on the infrastructure which the power company (or distribution network operator) incurs costs to provide.
So to prevent them having to upgrade the network at huge cost, they discourage low power factors.
Nice explain

Which capsity capasitor need to inset
For industries, discoms billing on KVAH meter values. So if u don't maintain PF, ur bill will be little bit more when u compare with when u maintain PF as unity.
Thats why in industries, we always try to maintain unity PF.
If u maintain unity PF, the stress on cables will reduced

Thanks brother, you explained it very well and simple
our home meter don't register the KVar... only the active power is registered, so why u need to use cap ??
bro are you new on this? 😂
Making a change to the output of thye meter will not affect the billing rate of the input to the meter, its a waste of time to consider the public could benefit by adding a capacitor to their output side of the power meter even if part of the home or business were to be rented, the same power billo still results. Surges in power is not a good thing esp for Internet electronic equipment which would be crowded with a noisy line decreasing quality of service.

MORNING FRIEND WHAT VALUE OF CAPACITOR IF MAY CURRENT 220 VOLT LOAD 3K TO 5K ,THANK YOU ..
What is the value of capacitor
I only read some comments afterwards they explained their tests with equipment somtimes good sometimes bad worse
A powfactor not equal to 1 will cost extra. Lagging ( motors) or leading ( capacitive load, say a capacitor bank )
A factor lagging more than than 0.6 say 0.55 wil let the meter reverse
There is no way that you combined use is as bad as 0.9. so 0.6 is worst case scenario
Geyser and stoves and heating equipment use the most electricity, at a powerfactor of 1
Only motor devises ( small. 250 watt excetra, example )
Fridges, pumps an fans that is driven by motors will affect the power factor negatively ( but they are small devices )
Called lagging power factor
But not.at a rate as bad as 0.8 combined
If you want to install capacitors on those motors you can, but as close to the motor as possible, when they run to take the powerfactor closer to 1.0
But you can not use a single capacitor bank
If the motors are not running
You pay for the leading factor fault wich is just as bad
In factory's a system that use synchronous machines is used to correct the factory supply ( use ) powefactor to reduse the bill
For home please mention the capacity of capacitor (MFD)

Hi when we use motors, like fans, grinders and AC etc.. when we switch on sudden change in voltage drop is happens, to arrest that we need capacitors after switch individually. its also regulate power factor. this method controls sudden voltage drops and increase motor life. Most of the industries people use this method. but remember we have to connect before motor, parallelly to be connected. Otherwise it draws some power and bill will be increased

Thanks, Mr Arun , I m agree with you on this issue, but I don't agree with that that a capacitor improves the life of an electrical device because a capacitor ( after with appropriate calculated size ) only reduces the current before the junction point of that equipment and capacitor, and not after the same, so therefore the current of the equipment will be the same as in previous condition, then how can it will save or increase the life of that equipment?

Your video is ok while the billing is done on active power called kwh. But, now the EB s are billing on reactive power which is called kvah which is more than kwh , when we use inductive loads, ie motors, fans, ACs etc... So in Telugu states, better install suitable capacitors to improve the power factor nearer to 1, so that the bills are reduced. As of now, there is no low power factor charges seperately.

what is the value of capacitor to use for 220 volts power supply .pls answer
It's not the p.f aspect. The harmonics and transients contribute to parasitic current consumption. Capacitors partly reduce harmonics and transients, so the loads produce less harmonic currents. Some digital meters are not calibrated for harmonics and may excessively render kWH. Besides cost-saving: 1) equipment will last longer. 2) better health due to reduced harmonic electric and magnetic fields. For these benefits, the capacitors are installed just before the fuse box.
Put cap ..and put PF ,watts meter ..switch off all everything in house .......look pf meter ..
