Thanks! I appreciate the comments and views.. I also look back at it for the torque specs. having two bikes the numbers get jumbled in my head sometimes!
This is soooooo much faster than on my last bike lmao Very glad that Kawasaki made this bike (mostly) service-friendly, and not have to take off half the fairings just to get to the oil filter and/or bolt
I appreciate you making this detailed video! I just did a oil change for the first time today , EVER, and it was a success great part to this detailed video. Thank you!
I just took off the dealer-installed filter (I had the first service done at the dealer so they couldn't try to void my warranty). Of course it was on too tight. I had one of those 65mm cup wrenches but the soft metal of the wrench just rounded off (thankfully the filter's edges were still straight). I had an idea, wrap a rubber band around the filter where the wrench makes contact. The filter came right off with a nice long ratchet. The filter won't come out of the wrench, but it was rounded anyways. I also use K&N oil filters just for that hex nut at the end so the wrench isn't needed anymore.
I never have been a fan of the k&n oil filters. If its higher flow. The only way they are doing that is with less filtering. Also we had a rash of k&n filters leaking oil and causing problems for riders here in Idaho
@@PistonSlap It's possible that higher flow could be achieved by a larger filter surface area. But the cheapest way would be to use larger pores in the filter, and as you say, reduced filtering capacity. I'll have to keep an eye out for leaks. That I didn't expect.
Also, what you forgot to mention is that when you start the bike for the first time with a new oil filter, the oil will fill the filter and your oil level will drop a tiny bit so you should always double check and top off if needed.
Thanks for the upload! About to tackle this myself this weekend and this video is a great help, great tip on using the cut-up coolant bottle as a slide when changing the filter :)

I see you went with a factory oil filter but what about a k&n oil filter with the nut on the top so you can just use a normal socket instead of the circle thing that goes around the hole filter
It's up to you for the filter you want to run on the bike. I personally think that the k&n filter will let more particulates threw then a factory. This how the get a higher flow. I know people that run them and never have any problems. It's a preference thing.
Thank you for showing us how to do this. I do have a question. I noticed at the end of your video, there are two black tubes dangling towards the bottom of the motorcycle. You can use minute 6:44 as a reference. What are they for and are they supposed to stay that way?
+Riyad El-laithy great question, one is the fuel tank breather line and the other is for if you over fill the tank a bit it drains off down that line and onto the ground. And yes they need to be down there. Thanks for the comment and support!
Great question; I personaly check mine while both tires are on the ground and help strait up. You want the engine to be as level as posible. check the oil level a few minuets after you shut the engine off to get a accurate reading. Hope this helps.
Hey buddy great video!! I have a 2015 ZX6r what's the exact oil and oil filter part i'm going to need i'm about to do my first oil change on it thanks again, and do you have any idea what these bikes put out stock horsepower wise or have any idea what the 2015 ZX6 puts out?
I don't know off the top of my head for the filter part number. I just walk into the kawi dealer and tell them I need a oil filter and drain plug gasket for my bike. I use the 10w40 Proplus from maxima racing oils. And for the stock power. Here's a video I put together of mine on the dyno. It is all stock. 2013 ZX6R Dyno: ua-cam.com/video/cWmxvQC_Hmw/v-deo.html
My new 2013 ZX-6R has almost 700 miles on it so i plan on doing an oil change this weekend. How hard was the filter to get off on the first oil change? I had a 2006 ZX-10R last time around and it required a near act of God to get the filter off the first oil change. I had the same filter adapter you do for my socket set but it wouldn't come off with that. I eventually had to go out and get a set of oil filter pliers but I don't think those would work on this bike because of how the filter is positioned. Let me know asap if you can and thank you so much for the detailed vid!
This video was the first time I had removed the oil filter, I don't recall it being really tight. It seemed to be just past snug and then spun off. Hey pistonslap, i also have a 2013 zx6r and used your video as reference for changing the oil myself, its at about 18k miles and the previous owner used a different oil than I did, still a 10w-40 though, after I followed your video, i added 3 quarts and then about 1/4 of another bottle to get as close to 3.3Quarts as possible and when i look at the sight glass it appears empty! I do see a slight bit of color at the very bottom but I dont know if its the old oil or not because it seems more yellow than the castrol I put into it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks!
When your checking your oil is the bike standing strait up or is it on the side stand? Also the engine should be off and wait a few minutes for it to drain down. If your looking at the sight glass and the bike on is side stand, pull it upright while watching the sight glass. you should see the oil level in the glass between the two marks. If not add a little oil and keep checking. If you over fill the engine you won't be able to see the level. Drain a little oil out to correct this. Hope this helps.
+Piston Slap thanks for the tip! I can see when the bike is level that I in fact put slightly too much oil and it is a hair over the top line, I am just have difficulty trying to remove some
So after reading your little discussion in the comments, I plan on doing my oil change this ween-end. Should I hand thighten the oil filter? I don't have a torquen wrench so I would just use a regular wrench and give it a little bit over a turn... or should I just use my hands?

What type of oil do I put in that bike? At times when I check my oil window I don't see any oil in it and get worried. It's a new bike so I don't think I have any leaks. I'd like to keep some oil around to top it off
@Piston Slap My 2013 636 Has Only 1,400 miles on it. I did my oil change at 600 miles. I am currently deployed overseas and won't be home until the end of November 2015. My dad turns on my motorcycle once a week while im gone. My question to you is should I do another oil change when I get home or will my bike be fine? Thanks!!!
typejlb I would , the reason is that when your dad starts the bike it is in a warm up mode. This warm up mode adds extra fuel to the engine to keep it running and warm it up faster at the same time. Some of the unburnt fuel will get past the piston rings and end up in your oil. Depending on how long you are deployed I would usually put stabil in the fuel and ride it so that it get into the fuel injectors and stuff. Second I would install a battery tender on it to keep the battery up. Just as if you were winterizing your bike. Hope this helps and Id like to thank you for serving our country!
@Piston Slap Thanks for the advice and for the support!!. As far as the battery tender my bike already came built in with one and my dad does have it plugged in. I will let him know about the stabil and have him add some for me. I know he doesn't like riding my motorcycle. Will that be a problem if he doesn't ride it when adding the stabil? I do have my bike on stands, should I just tell him to carefully put it in gear while on the stands just to have it running or should the bike be fine just running it parked?

They also say if your riding at high speeds and dusty/ harsh enviroments the change your oil more often. Personaly I do mine at 3000 miles every time. (except the first one at 500) hope this helps.
I change my oil a few weeks ago and I didn't replace the washer because I didn't know I had to. Will there be a problem if I ride it with the old washer?
Hi, I have a zx6r and I change the oil and the oil filter and I put 3.2 quarts. but the problem is the window of the oil level is not shown any oil. can you tell me what is the problem and how much oil do I have use in the bike? thank you
Abdulrhman Nasib the bike calls for 3.3. try adding a little till you see it. Also makr sure your holding the bike strait up and down as if you were sitting still at a stop
I have a 2013 ZX6R 636 with only 130 miles on it. After I drove to work today about 5 miles I checked the oil on level ground and the bike was in the upright position. The oil was over both lines covering the whole glass. I'm going to drain when I get home but do you think it caused any damage? Should I do a complete oil change? It's Sunday and dealerships closed so I'm going to take pictures for warranty issues. But there's no way I'm going to leave my oil like that.
Chris Hodges 5 miles wouldn't hurt anything. I might cause a problem if you were on a track or canyon carving at 14k rpm. I would do just as you stated and drain a little bit out to get the oil level in the correct range. Its sad that there are people that do the pre delivery inspection on our bike when bought new and things like this get missed.
Piston Slap No man... I just checked it today after riding 5 miles. It had 0 on it when I bought it from the showroom and it now has 130 miles. It was a leftover 2013 Model. I've been breaking it in this whole time with to much oil.
Oh. That's a bit different, sorry I misunderstood you. I don't think the dealer is going to find anything. But to be safe I'd ha e them check it out or at least call them on Monday. In the meantime adjust the oil level.
Piston Slap Will do... How did you break your 636 in? It's seems impossible to run it only 4k RPM's for 500 miles. It's only 55MPH in 6th. I wanna break it in correctly but it seems that's lugging it a bit. I've hit 8k RPM's a couple times but that's because I don't wanna get my but ran over.

+kai nizam Thanks for the heads up. I just checked the service manual and mine shows the same 3.6L for total capacity. I did a bit of digging and 3.6 is with a completely dry engine as if you had dismantled it and rebuilt it. 2.8L if you didn't remove the filter and 3.1 if you did remove the filter. Thanks for the comment and for bringing this to my attention.
Its has been a while since I purchased one but they tend to be around .50 to 2.00 U.S. depending on where you get them. I ended up buying a bag of 50 on Amazon for my currant bike.
@@AllFubar I am looking but haven't found the size yet. Short of driving over to the motorcycle shop and buying on. can cause leakage if you tighten it too much. I hand tighten mine and I need a tool to get it off. Using a tool to tighten it can cause the oil filter seal to leak. Damages the seal or thread.
Yeah. The tighting spec didnt feel real tight but that was what the service manual called for. Iv seen on other filter that show about a turn and a quarter to one and three quarters after the seal touches. When there over tightened its a real fun time trying to get them off!

I change my oil a few weeks ago and I didn't replace the washer because I didn't know I had to. Will there be a problem if I ride it with the old washer?
jalamos89 nope. it's one of the things that gets over looked. I just make it a point when I buy a filter to buy a drain bolt washer.
Piston Slap I'll try to do that and I'll let you know
thank you 😊
Abdulrhman Nasib your welcome, thanks for watching!
It was the perfect amount that you told me 😊
thanks a lot
Iv ran mine up to 8k. You don't want to hold the throttle at a constant rpm.
What is the size of the washer?
I never did find a exact size but here is a amazon link for the crush washers www.amazon.com/20-Pack-Motorcycle-Sealing-Washers-Gaskets/dp/B07FN6N8XP/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=2013+ZX6R+DRAIN+BOLT+SEAL&qid=1589225736&sr=8-5
What size is the filter socket?
64 mm should be the one. I will double check this on Monday when I have access to the socket to measure it.
+RecklessZapper Just checked this morning and it measured 64mm. I updated the previous reply as well.
Thanks!
Doesn’t any stand level the bike off
Some will tilt is slightly forward.
Cost of oil and filters?
Oil is about 40.00 U.S filter was around 7 bucks. It's been a while since buying one.
@@PistonSlap that's cheap for a bike like that
@@aniketsingh1974 it is. I also changed it every 3k
@@PistonSlap not everyone take care of their bike you're doing a good work man.
@@aniketsingh1974 thanks. Sadly this bike is gone. The second owner crashed it on the track at Utah Motorsports Campus.
mate are u sure its 3.1L? my manual says oil capacity is 3.6L or 3.8qts
+Piston Slap lol thanks for explaining it mate coz i did change my eo n used 3.1L as u said. so i guess it's good to go. ;)
How much is the seal?
Its has been a while since I purchased one but they tend to be around .50 to 2.00 U.S. depending on where you get them. I ended up buying a bag of 50 on Amazon for my currant bike.
@@PistonSlap Sorry, I meant the size, can you put me the link?
@@AllFubar I am looking but haven't found the size yet. Short of driving over to the motorcycle shop and buying on. Here is a link the Amazon ones I purchased www.amazon.com/20-Pack-Motorcycle-Sealing-Washers-Gaskets/dp/B07FN6N8XP/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=2013+ZX6R+DRAIN+BOLT+SEAL&qid=1589225736&sr=8-5
@@PistonSlap thanks a lot
I disagree on using a tool to tighten oil filter.
Did you have a problem with it?
can cause leakage if you tighten it too much. I hand tighten mine and I need a tool to get it off. Using a tool to tighten it can cause the oil filter seal to leak. Damages the seal or thread.
Thats why I used the torque wrench. But that's good to know I'll check the seal and threads next time I take it off.
People probably afraid of it coming off lol, as much times as i have hand tightened it, never had a problem.
Yeah. The tighting spec didnt feel real tight but that was what the service manual called for. Iv seen on other filter that show about a turn and a quarter to one and three quarters after the seal touches. When there over tightened its a real fun time trying to get them off!
Stupid ass filter was stuck on there omg ! 2 hours + to get it off
Sucks when that happens. Glad it finaly came off for ya.
