in 74 or 75 I saw DP in NYC. was up front Blackmore was right in front of me the whole night. toward the end of the show I motioned to him that I wanted his pic. at the end of the show he walked over to the edge of the stage with his pick in his hand and pointed directly at me and tossed it to me. I picked it up and ended up giving it to my friend who was with me who was a great guitar player and loved Ritchie Blackmore. what a long strange trip it's been

We used to have BBC Radio 1 "In Concert" every Saturday in the 70s, from 6.30 to 7.30, but when it was Purple for this show, they extended it to 90 minutes & I'm sure it was recorded "live" there and then. I had one of those old fashioned tape recorders, reel to reel, but I also had a direct recording lead, so as long as the radio station was tuned in correctly, I could record it without a microphone. The show was what became Live in London, when it came out some years later. I remember Jon Lord saying how he used to go to the cinema there at Kilburn in his younger days. I had a good recording at the end of the show & it was great to hear it all again & again. I think the Bristol show was after the Kilburn date, but yes, it was the same set list, I am sure. As for the tape, that disappeared years ago, probably thrown out when the LP of the same show came out!

Joe and Paul, I really respect your opinions. I have listened to a lot of Mark II lately and nothing will EVER beat their live masterpiece Made in Japan. I was listening to a coupler of interviews from Ian Gillan and the late Jon Lord. They both said something similar. They inferred that by mid-73 Mark II had become formulaic. There is a 1974 interview with Gillan commenting on the Burn album and he said that of the few songs he heard, he liked the fact that Mark III had broken the barriers.
Deep Purple Mark III - were never as consistent as Mark II, but when they hit their stride like they did at the California Jam and on this CD they were strong. like both Mark II and Mark III as they have different strengths and weaknesses

This is fantastic. I know that I am in the minority . . . BUT . . . preferred Mark III to Mark II. This album is a testament to how good DeeP Purple were. The into to Mistreated . . . wow . . . and the rest of the album has Coverdale and Hughes compliment each other AND . . . . Paicey and Jon Lord at their peak . . . Ritchie Blackmore as at his best and playing wicked blues.Deep Purple at the end of 1974/early 1975 were untouchable.

I did not prefer this line-up to the Gillan-Glover one, but...
This recording showcases the Coverdale_Hughes lineup so well it gets allmost into Made in Japan territory for me. Great, great piece of recording, this. And Ritchie is on stellar(!) form here, let's not forget(!).

Honestly, the Mk II stuff on this record is throwaway. They play it well, but David is no match for Ian Gillan. MIJ is a perfect record. But here, the material from Burn is awesome. YFNO crushes in every possible way. Absolutely stellar.

The best hard rock band I've ever heard...Ian Paice is the best and most underrated drummer of all time. His rolls are like machine gun fire! And what can you say about Blackmore? When he wanted to get serious and play rock, he was in the same category as Beck, Clapton, Page, Stevie Ray, Hendrix, etc.

+JON MILLER Then again, it was the only Mk II song they got allmost right. Space Truckin' and Highway Star, which they often did, didn't feel right at all. They did however perform the Burn material exellently. You Fool No One, Mistreated and Burn sound absolutely stellar in this recording, which I think is the best recording of this line-up. Blackmore is absolutely ON here.

Glenn Hughes and Coverdale just BLAST !! Hughes is dominant in this Line Up MK III . Remember the guy was just 21years old here. Hughes&Coverdale Vocal Comby was best for Purple is my opinion.

+Hanzey666 Well I'm agree with that, but they are great to make the band split... Coverdale roxx, Huges is a pain in the ass... That''s what I think sorry but he made the band an FM newby machine.

+Nicolas Debant Why some just cannot ,,forgive,, Glenn Hughes for what has happened long time ago,........ Most of the people in that camp throw that to the guy everytime it comes to speak/write. But come on man , his musical input in Purple was amazing... unless you do not like Purple after Blackmore left. But thats just a completely other story then....

Sabarpramono Pramono Sorry, I admire to Jimi Hendrix but Ritchie B. Became better than Jimi Hendrix, faster and technically cleaner, the sad side is that Ritchie was an underrated guitar player and Jimi overrated!

At 1:29:53, a hint of Still I'm Sad.
One must wonder whether Still I'm Sad was Rainbow's attempt at recreating the live version of You Fool No One, showcasing so many instrumental breaks.
