Aretha Franklin was 73 and living with pancreatic cancer here. She died a little more than two years later. That's why the crowd is going extra wild - she had been unwell for a number of years. Kind of an open secret. But this night - The LION ROARED!!! Natural Woman is written by Carole King and is one of Aretha's biggest HITS!! And yes boys, Aretha played the piano....and then some. She was somewhat of a prodigy.
The crowd went wild because Aretha is an icon, a legend, gave a fantastic performance, played the piano, and sang her iconic hit for another living legend.
@@GalaxyNexus1 Yes, well that was implied, no? Aretha had been cancelling shows, had lost 85 pounds following surgery that she chose not to discuss, there was what seemed a farewell tribute to her on The Grammy Awards and when she did perform in the years between her initial cancer diagnosis and this performance - her voice was often weak and unimpressive. So this was not just another night with an icon. People were *surprised* to see her and THEN - she played and SANG and blew the roof off the theatre. Aretha gave them the full DIVA and sang Natural Woman as only she could. It was a joyful appearance and a great gift to Carol King and the audience. But Aretha did it for herself. She was optimistic about her health and She LOVED prestigious occasions.
@TombCat nothing unsaid is implied. You made a statement and said that was the reason they were excited. It was not. Whether she had been sick or not, the reaction would have been the same.
@TombCat you are not everyone. Nor are you the representative for everyone. Get a life. Move on. There must be something more important for you to do. The internet has definitely amplified the need for mental health care.
Carol King is the songwriter. Aretha made a record when she was 12 years old of her playing piano and singing. That was in the 1960's. Her first big hit was 1965. So, this is 50 years later. This is while Obama was still president.
I sang this song to both of my kids while I held them right after giving birth. They are 22 and 14 now and this song still takes me back there. Surreal moments❤❤❤
And she was practically a baby when she started her career! She was getting paid (with her then-husband Gerry Goffin) to write songs when she was still in college
Last time I watched this video, I started tearing up. Knowing this was her last performance, and how amazing she still sounded then. It made me realize how much I loved, missed, and appreciated her.
Barack was wiping a tear away at one point there and by the time she dropped that coat to the floor I was right there with him. (She also performed at his inauguration in a legendary hat.)
Carole King wrote the song. Just her joy of seeing Aretha singing it is just.... It's making me cry! Every time! Aretha singing stand in instead of Luciano Pavoeotti better be in here. It's unbelievable!! Never gets old.
Carole King's "Tapestry" is a monumental album. Like one of the most influential albums in music history. It's worth a deep dive. She's a genius songwriter and she's a great singer too. She influenced so many women who came after her.
All of the people with the medals were honored that night. Carole King wrote this song. She was so excited and flabbergasted throughout Aretha's performance and particularly at the start, because the legendary Aretha showed up to honor her AND sung this song which is a classic of both of theirs and not only that, but Aretha had never played piano on this song. Aretha didn't always play piano. So when Aretha sat down, King was like "what?????" Later in her life, Aretha actually enrolled at Juliard and studied Classical Piano. ICONIC.
Every year the Kennedy Center Honors are given to a group of artists who are outstanding in their field. Opera, Film, Songwriters, Bands, Actors, etc. Each honoree is given a a tribute by a few people who know them or are dear to them while they sit in the President's Box. The ribbon necklace signifies the award. It's aways a good show!
Carol King wrote and recorded this song originally. It appears on her Tapestry album, along with I Feel The Earth Move, So Far Away, It’s Too Late, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, and You’ve Got A Friend. There is a Broadway musical about her life and career called Beautiful - also a song from Tapestry.
@ShareeLove thank you so much for requesting this. For me this is #1 not just on this list but of all time. I had tears yesterday when I saw this on Patreon. Her emotion was hitting hard! ❤
It almost makes me cry to hear you didn't know who Carole King is 😢 You HAVE to listen to Tapestry. This song was a hit for King (who wrote it) but Aretha made it an anthem.
The next performances should be her 1993 I never loved a man, her 1970’s Call Me, 1990’s Clinton inauguration I dreamed a dream, and her 1967 Do right woman performances!! Fire 🔥
God dammit! This was to honor Carol king! Who wrote some of the best songs of all time. Including Natural Woman for Aretha! She’s a very big deal. Massive respect to CK ❤
I hope her live peformance of Nessun Dorma at the Grammy's is next !!!!! Carole King is a songwriter and also a musical artist (get into her album Tapestry for a week). Research her songwriting credits, she's written for girl groups, solo artists, rock musicians! she's no slouch! also important to note that Aretha Franklin was also honored at the Kennedy Center in 1994, and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 - the first female artist to be inducted. To know that Aretha played by ear, didn't read music, essentially a self-taught prodigy of the piano AND THAT VOICE! that's once in a lifetime. Vocally, Aretha has had some interesting eras - of course her 60's era is otherwordly, her 70's era is a sweet spot for most. her 80's and her 90's era though - you must make that part of your Aretha Week. the vocal differences due to weight loss and giving up smoking is noticeable. People won't agree with that statement but it makes a huge difference. at the end of the day, her voice was always distinctive and recognizable from the first note.

😮 I always wondered why she was so emotional about the performance
Aretha was always good at piano
the real honour was seeing her play coz she didn't do it in public often

One of the songs Miss Aretha is best known for & Carol King is the writer of said song.
Carole King was a singer and songwriter. Natural woman was a song that she sang and wrote.
AWESOME 💯💯💯
When the Backups Singers have more musicality and class than the recent top 10 ! George Lucas yes... but no Carol King ?
Mahalia Jackson used to babysit Aretha and she learned to play by ear.
