  • A 15000lb capacity forklift showed up close to the house so I decided it would be good to have around. It is a Hyster RC-150 15000lb rated machine. Powered by a 320cid Flathead Hercules. It needs some love but appears in pretty good condition for a machine that is likely 50years old.

    What a structure, and built with steel that hasn't rusted, I don't know if it's the climate in Kentucky but in the east our brides are rusted to the point where they need significant maintenance. Thanks for showing something that I couldn't never gat to see in my lifetime, too old to visit. Greatly appreciated, as always good luck in your future endeavors.

      Biggest thing that helps is it hasn't had salt poured all over it for the last 50 years like a road bridge. Our climate is super humid and with vast temperature swings we can make rust like nobodies business! I also have a personal belief that steel made using the open hearth technique versus basic oxygen is far more corrosion resistant.

    Hi Brian, It may be old, but it will still be going in another 50 years.
    They are incredibly useful. You just need a man cage for it and you could use it to erect the plywood wall sheeting.

    Great add. If the Dodge won't start you can roll on up to town on the fork truck for a loaf of bread. Or, pull on up to the Dodge and lift either end. Dragging a floor jack on gravel is a pain.
    George Jones rode his lawn mower to town so the precedent is already there.
    Add a little Marvel Mystery OIl to the fuel and let it run. If it does nothing at least the fuel will smell nice. Likely motor was never updated for unleaded gas and the guides may be angry about that.
    The truck tires are a nice option. If neighbor calls and has a few too many you can carry his truck home for him.... smile!

    That is an excellent addition. From what I can see it is in excellent condition for being 50 years old. Yeah, put grease in all the fittings, pull some new wire, service the motor and bolt on a replacement metal brace and Bob's your uncle. I would also replace all the filters and oil.

    Score! Man that thing is going to come in handy! You'll have that thing up and running good in a week. I would say you are correct, bet it's never had a valve adjustment. Stuff like that never gets done by the operators. As long as she moves they will use it.

    • @lewiemcneely9143

      That's supposedly a mechanics job anyway.

    • @SteveSummers
      @SteveSummers 6 років тому +8

      The point was that no one cares as long as it runs. Our lifts at work suffer from similar neglect. Mechanic almost never get informed of a issue until the equipment fails to start or move. People will run them into the ground from my experience.

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 6 років тому +3

      Sounds like your outfit has a shoddy way of keeping track of stuff. Where I was and have been on several jobs you fill out a daily pre-shift report and if something is wrong it'll either be addressed to be done later or pulled off to be fixed then. And not everybody is a dud. I've been at it over 40 years and one of my main calling cards is I take care of stuff. So it's not always the operators fault. They get overruled a lot.

    • @bcbloc02

      There are always good operators and bad operators.

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 6 років тому +2

      yep depending on the outfit, sometimes they have one mechanic and all he does is chase what is broken 'caus they need it yesterday, there is no management for servicing or preventative anything, sure they could be run much better and cheaper if things are looked after, but sometimes the users also drive things to make them break if they can

    Drove one of those back in the day, great machine especially with the high boom, if you look around you might be able to find longer forks which really come in handy at times, the best thing is the high sitting area & great visibility all around, should make putting up that high paneling pretty easy, just remember to work safe at all times and keep an eye out for all helpers ....

    Hi Brian, I know you get lots of advise on working on your equipment. I thought
    I would add something. I would recommend that if you can swing it, pull the plugs, check compression letting you know which cylinder is suspect, and if possible if you don't have a camera, see if you can borrow one, or rent one and look in the cylinders and inspect the valves. I have worked on several of these engines and they do burn valves. This would save you having to take the exhaust and intake off the second time, if needed. I do think you scored big with this piece of equipment. These things are built better and tougher than a tank.

    40 years ago drove one like that 10 hrs day year in year out rain snow, you name it, & your machine looks like a dream compared to that one. Loaded 18 1/2 foot packs thru a 19 ft door way , last two pack you doubled stacked and you had 4" of lift to spare to set them on top. You had to hustle , Boss didn't want them kiln doors open any more time than necessary .
    That short turn radius is sweet & ours was a 4 speed tranny n yes could jam up thru those gears , speed was needed.
    Called it hustle on the hyster , kinda miss those days. Could load a semi in under 15 minutes or less, truck drivers loved me n their quick turn time. Brought back lots of memory's ... Most time accelerator was flat on the board. Boss loved my load times.

    Brian is right about working in an industrial setting. I worked one place where they didn't care if I had to spend an hour adjusting a machine each time they turned on a particular machine, just as long as I didn't spend any money to fix it properly. I bought a $50 tube of pneumatic grease to lube the various pneumatic machines they had and they were not happy. I was spending far more of my time repacking and replacing pneumatic seals each and every week than the tube of pneumatic grease was worth.

      @@bcbloc02 Yeah at the time we had that and a B22 Caterpillar 20,000 pound machine. Everyone preferred using the Hyster it was a more productive machine when we had a lot of steel to load or unload.
      I really don't remember needing much repair despite being a 25 year old machine at the time. All I remember is one time something on the ground flipping up and puncturing the oil pan and we had to weld it because we couldn't get a pan for the Hercules right away.
      My grandfather loved that machine and a new or newer one was in no way out of his price range

    Hey that's a good looking deal there. I wouldn't like the gas either not using it every day. I'm sure you can find some propane conversion goodies cheap simple as that ol beast is. Once you commit to take it apart for the valves the propane wouldn't really be a big deal. I've seen a couple forklifts like that get resold out of scrapyards and put back to use. Neither of them were really "wore" out. Just like yours, needed little tlc. One was converted to lp gas. Thanks for sharing.

    This just reminds me, I need to get my forklift moved. I have it stored at a friends shop. If you keep the gasoline engine I’d recommend converting it to propane. Then you don’t have to worry about fuel going bad before you use the whole tank. These types of machines have a fairly large fuel tank so they could be run all day on a tank of fuel. But in my case I had a gasoline engine and my occasional use, the fuel would go bad or I’d only put a couple gallons in the tank and it would run out of fuel at the most inopportune times! I finally purchased the one I own now that is propane powered!

    That is probably the most serviceable forklift you could find. You can get that engine running just fine with a little work. The rest of it is really simple to maintain. Before you go to the trouble to adjust the valves do a compression test. It might simply be electrical system problems.

    Good find Brian , a proper machine that has no computer bits to go wrong and cost a fortune to mend or replace .It's built like a brick $h// outhouse and looks to be in reasonable condition apart from the gas engine, doesn't look to be a massive job to put a diesel unit in it . plenty of room for it and you have the machinery to manufacture the conversion parts when you get time.

    I got drafted into help load one just like that on a ramp trailer that was sold from an old talc mine in 01. It ran like a Swiss watch, flathead and all but had some kind of an oil clutch with a belt drive pump that wasn't hooked up and maybe some gauges for it. A guy was putting up a machine shop and snagged it just for the same purpose as you. I was trying to help shove it on the trailer with a trackhoe about half the size of the lift. We dood it though. Fine old machine and it'll work for you one way or another!

    Great addition. The trucking company I worked for just out of high school had one the same except for the side-shift. The oval hole in the rear cast piece at the bottom had a provision for a tow pin. We used to use ours to move dead vehicles in and out of the the shop and yard. Yeah, the flathead valves can be a bitch to access but don't need to be done often. Just FYI the 6bt might be a little long but a turbo 4bt will be an easy fix and should be more than happy to provide enough power to move anything you need it too.

    Brian, It should also come in handy for your exterior painting of the shop & any other high up work on the upper portion of the shop as well, being it's off road capable. You'll have to find yourself an operator ;) to run you up & down while you stand on a pallet doing the painting, etc though. Nice find ! Always better to go the overkill route, rather than the other way & be sorry later.
    I'll be interested to see how your luck goes to rectum-fy the power train situation. Maybe you could remove that tilt cylinder & set it aside or gain access with the tire & wheel removed to gain access to the valve / tappets ? That way you wouldn't have to go through the trouble of manifold removal & gasket locating, etc. Just a thought. Thanks for the update & preview of your latest vintage acquisition !

Personally, Perkins suck & Minneapolis Moline parts are too hard to find. Now a John Deere engine might've suited you better, but I believe you will come to appreciate that Hercules!

    If you ever watch Cold War Motors, you eill see a huge fork truck lifting and loading cars at the old car yard. It has longer forks, of course. It would be ideal for lifting a vehicle onto jack stands.

    I have a forklift based on a WW2 weapons carrier its an odd rig.
    Are you sure 15000 lbs is enough for you machines ! ?
    I helped a friend do a valve job on an old lift like that they were not adjustable . we took it apart I brought some stones and cut the seats. Took the valves back to the shop and ground them. went back to the fork lift and Dropped the valves back in checked the clearance. And marked them all took them to the shop and tipped every one the right amount . Brought them back and put the engine back together it ran great. Hope that's the problem could be a flat cam.

    To run properly on unleaded fuel without additives, that engine would need to have been fitted with stainless steel inlet valves and stainless steel valve seat inserts as many other older vehicles were modified in this way. Normally just the cylinder head has to be removed for this operation to be performed. However this is a sidevalve engine so it is the engine block that has to be machined. Stainless steel inlet valves may well have been fitted, but it is unlikely that the valve seats were fitted with inserts. If so the seats may have been refaced several times and are now so thin that they cannot be repaired again. Brian, you could fix this but too much time, effort and money would be involved. I would not want to run that engine as it is without fuel additives.
